Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Because of her age she can't officially run (with a number) but she can run it unofficially. But I do believe she has to run with an adult too.

Bummer that she can't run officially. I guess that means they don't time her either :-(

They don't time anyone. There is a time clock, and you just note your own time when you finish.

June 2011. It is very informal. People show up & they give minimal instructions. I walked it as did many others.

What fun! My Dis Meet crew made up special 5K shirts. Now they have official shirts that you can buy.

Someone mentioned putting their kid in a stroller, but then I never saw anything else about that. Is it possible to do the race with a kid in a stroller? Thanks!

There's another CC 5K thread I've been following and it appears that it's fine to walk it. Lots of people do it.

Last year when I sailed you just showed up where they told you to meet at a certain time (it was a bar). That information was in the Navigator the night before. You sign up and get your things there that morning, then you all leave the ship together as a group to go to the start line. From talking to others, this has also been there experience. HTH

I'm excited for the 5k when I cruise. I told my DD10 that she would stay on ship while I do the run and then will come crack to get her. I had no idea there was a 5k until I saw a past navigator. So excited... I just wish my DD10 could do it with me

When you get to the meeting place (It will be in the Navigator - on the Fantasy in November it was in The Tube) they check your ID and KTTWC and assign you a number and give you a bib. :thumbsup2

Can you leave the kids at the youth club to run? I have not looked into the policy of leaving kids on the ship.

Her average 5K time right now is 24 minutes. She kicks my butt! She will be absolutely crushed if she is not allowed to run this 5K!!!

My message got cut off on the front end... My question was so there is no way a 10 year old can run this? My DD10 is an avid runner and swimmer and does regular 5ks and youth triathlons. Then it should read the rest above! Lol

The rule is 12 years. She can run, but no bib .. Only unofficially.

I think it's a liability thing- they won't let anyone under 12 officially register, which means no bib and no medal at the end. Maybe it's concerns about the heat /humidity (though not as big an issue in february) But from what I've read, she'll be able to run it with you (off the books, so to speak). You may have to call her 12 at the starting line. whether she'll be able to run it if she leaves you in the dust and is not accompanied by an adult, I'm not sure. Haven't read anything about it. But if you're willing to hand over your medal and/or buy her the souvenir t shirt afterwards she'd probably be OK.

There's a kids club on the island as well which may be more convenient as long as they're up and running- you'd have to detour there to drop off on your way to the race start and might miss a bit of the pre-race instructions but I've read in someone's post that that's what they did. I've also read about people using the nursery on-ship while they ran- but I seem to remember that a spouse was still on board ridng the duck or such. Not sure you'd be allowed off the boat without your kid if there weren't someone on board to call in case of emergency.

When I ran it in October the kids club was not open on the island yet. Also, there were no medals :-(. You couLd buy a tshirt at a kiosk right where the finish line was. It was really hot even first thing in the morning, so plan accordingly and hydrate lots before. There is water on the course.

It was fun to say I did it, but the course was nothing interesting, and it was super hot.

Oh man. I've heard that the medal situation is hit or miss some people say they're plastic and junky, some that they're being redesigned, some that they weren't offered at all. Grrr. Consistency, please, DCL?!?

I did the wine and dine half marathon at WDW in november and LOVE my medal from that race. I wore it to the parks after, on the flight home, to the gym on my first day back, so proud was I. :cool1: I'm not a fast runner, it was about the accomplishment. The beast park was that I overheard someone in line behind me at one point talking about it. "she doesn't look like she'd be THAT fast- how the heck did she win the race and get that thing??" I didn't bother to turn around and explain thet every finisher got one. The pictures I saw of the CC 5k medal show that the ribbon around your neck actually says "winner". Love that.
So I'm all about racking up another medal if I can. I'm unlikely to go for the tshirt- have lots of those sitting in a drawer already.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.
