Official Birthday/Anniversary Cake thread

I called the bakery line yesterday for a birthday dinner at Narcoosee's for DH's birthday next month. I really wanted to do something special. The person on the phone was very nonchalant and just said I should order what's available for $15 when we get there (I think that was the price she said). Otherwise I would have to call back to talk to someone else. After everything I have read and seen on this thread, and being sooo excited, I was very disappointed after the phone call. Has anyone else had this experience?

Yes this happened to me. I had spent countless hours searching thru this thread. It was finally time to call and make plan for our DD b-day cake. I was so excited becasue the whole trip was a surprise to her. She didn't know she was going to Disney until we were at the airport hotel. Anyway when I called I spoke w/ a women and she said I didn't have any option but to have the 6"cake non personalized or a 8"cake that was all chocolate or all white. I could have a picture put on the cake for an extra $8. I was so bummed. After seeing all the special cakes that people had on here I wanted something a little more special. Heartbroken I agreed on the chocolate cake w/ a picture of all the Princesses on it. And it was awful. The cake was dry and the buttercream tasted like chocolate flavored crisco. I'm hoping we have better luck this time around.

i'm planning to order a mini castle cake when we eat at narcoosees - hope it turns out ok when we finally get there....

I'm curious about that too as I am getting ready to order anniv. cake from GF bakery for dinner at Narcoossee's. I love the look of the mini castle cake but am afraid it is too small for the 2 of us.
You could try adding another layer like a previos poster had. First time I saw a two layer with a mini castle on the top.:goodvibes

I called yesterday to order our anniversary cake at AKL. We will be dining at Boma. When I told the guy I did not want the standard 6 in frozen cake and that my price range was 25 to 30 dollars. He said my only option was the 12.50 frozen cake. I asked him to describe the things that are beyond my price range. He did the whole spill of everything then named the customized 6 in that feeds four. I asked him how much that is and he said 25 plus some fees. I was like well that will fit in my price range then (duh!) I ordered choc. buttercream icing, vanilla cake and custard with strawberries filling.

Has anyone ordered that before? I'm am wondering if I should change the choc. buttercream to vanilla. Also, I thought only an 8 in or beyond is customizable. I did not know they had a 6 in.

He was helpful but I had to pull everything out of him. I felt like I knew more than he did.

Oh and I couldn't keep the cake a big surprise from my dh. I was so excited that I told him. :rotfl:

Wow, that's the 1st time I've seen AKL offer those options. You did good. :thumbsup2 I can't wait to hear how it was. FWIW, I'd stay with the chocolate icing. The combination you chose sounds delicious.

What a great idea!! Thanks so much. I just left a message for Linda to find out about ordering that. I don't know why I love that style so much. Guess I just think the castle is romantic!!!

We are celebrating our aniversary at the Poly and I want to order a cake.
I was thinking about a 2 tiers. Has anyone ordered one from there? If so what was it like and how much did it cost?

Thanks,
Karen

We just returned from Disney 2 days ago(May 8th 2008). One week before we left for our vacation I called the cake line and ordered a cake for my oldest daugher and oldest son. I gave the instructions for the cake the be delivered at our dinner at Tony's Town Square on May 4th. We had our dinner and desserts and then they brought the cake and sang Happy Birthday, it was great. We took the cake back to the room as we were too full to even attempt to eat any. We cut the cake later in the evening and I have to say...............it was the worst cake I have ever had. The cake itself was so dry you could acutally see the air bubbles in the cake. The filling had no flavor at all. The icing was good I will give it that. The cake was pretty though. It was white cake with butter cream icing and some type of pudding filling. It was a $25.00 cake.

As you know I posted a few threads back about wanting to get a cake for my sons birthday. It is the week of our trip. I thought I would order it for WCC. I called and it was kinad hard to get anything from them but for $85.00 I could get a 10 inch cake Marbel with whipped frosting and chocolate mouse filling. They could not say that there would beno flowers on it but I did ask if there was anything else that could be done to decorate it adn I was told no. I did ask about the Chocolate Donald and she said they only do that for guest of the hotel but she owuld try. I don't really want to show up and have a cake for my 11 year olds b-day with flowers. I will list my ADR's and ask if you can tell me which might be the best option. We will only celebrate one day. His birthday is our last day so we will do it which ever day we get the cake.

Please tell me which is the best place to have a yummy and decorative cake fot a 10 year old turning 11.

Day 1: Brown Derby Fantasmic Package ( birthday boy asked for fantasmic Brown Derby was all that was left)
Day 2: Ohana late breakfast that is at 10:40
Day 3: Rose N Crown lunch
Day 4: Boma dinner
Day 5: Kona lunch
Day 6: Whispering Canyon (asked for his birthday dinner here)
Day 7: Doanlds breakfast at Tusker House. (His favorate Place and wants to go every time. It is at 8:00am, and seems early for a cake. Today is his actual birthday but our last day as well.

I called about having it delivered to room but after a week still no calls back. On Day 1 he is having a birthday basket delivered. He has no idea I am ordering a cake. he thinks he will have one after the trip. He loves Goofy and would love to have a goofy on the cake. I just want to get him a good yummy cake (not the forozen ones I will pay the $85. I want it to be special since he will not have a party at home. Can you suggest anything at all? I love the zebra cakes as far as the look. I just need ideas I have gone through this thread a dozen times and I pretty much need to find out the best place we have and ADR to order one. I would love and appreciate any help you could give to me.

Thanks!!

$85 is nuts!! And they can't guarantee what you get?? No way, I'd switch to Boma and try and get the Zebra cake instead. If I were an 11 yr old boy, i'd hate flowers on my bday cake.

I don't think I've even seen a bday cake from WL in the past couple years that hasn't had flowers on it. I think their decorating services are very limited. What size was the $85 cake?

I think Boma is by far your best bet, especially with the recent report that they are now doing more than just the zebra cake.

Maybe you'll hear from the resort. Good luck!

$85 can't be right. We've haggled with WL over a cake too, and the 10 inch was around $40. Why the heck they told you over double that for a plain cake, I have no idea.

If you have transportation, I'd suggest doing what I'm doing and getting a cake from Boardwalk Bakery. We'll pick it up in person in between parks and then eat it in the room the night of my birthday. WL just doesn't have the decorating ability I need for a cake.

GL to you! :wizard:

I'm thinking about calling and canceling the cake at Boma for our anniversary. I just can't see spending $35 dollars for a cake that will taste the same as one from Publix. I wanted it so bad but to hear that other people had dry plain cakes for $25 plus tax makes me question my decision. I really wish the white chocolate cake with white chocolate icing was available at Boma. The guy didnt say that it was but he also didn't seem to know the options anyway. What should I do? :confused3

I am sorry! I thought I added that they said they would Try to put the White Chocolate Donald on it. So the cost includes that. It was a 10 inch round cake. I had to pretty much beg to get information from her. And when I asked about a mickey or donald she said that they would try. I guess I really wouldn't know what I would get till I show up.

Thanks for all the info! I love the look of the zebra cakes. I really want him to like it.

Thanks!

Here are 4 links to places recommended on here. It is more about what you are looking for because they all come highly recommended.

Disney florist is unique because they are the only ones who can include food products in the baskets. I am working with them now and very impressed with their helpfulness.

Peggy is great, she is a regular here on the DisBoards and makes fully custom baskets if needed, she is praised by all who use her service.

Betsy also makes fully custom baskets and gets great comments from all who have used her service:

Gifts of a lifetime does not do baskets, but they do so much more. It is fun to look and dream at least!

I can only say I will never do it again :sad2: . I have had better cakes from Winn Dixie. I spent the $25.00+tax+tip and we took 2 bites of the cake and threw it away :sad1:. I am not sure which bakery it came from as it was not baked at The Plaza because it was printed on the box for it to be delivered there. I hope this helps. I hate for my bad experience to sour anyone else on trying something they want.

Here's a photo of DH's 40th birthday cake that we had a few weeks ago at Narcoossee's. It was delish!!!! Dark chocolate with chocolate mousse filling - heaven!!!
