Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

I'm about halfway finished with my race costumes. All I need is some leggings for my 5K costume, a tutu for my 10K costume, and running skirt for my HM costume. I have everything else. I think I'll wait until after the holidays to get the rest of the stuff I need. I am so swamped right now, it's not even funny. Going back to school next week to finish my degree (need 5 more classes to earn my Bachelor's), wedding planning (we got engaged on Sept. 7th), and just submitted my "dream sheet" for transfer next summer. Not to mention, it's our busiest month out of the whole year at work, and I have my employee review next month. Running is keeping me sane. I logged 4 miles in this crazy weather yesterday, then did a 2-mile recovery run on the treadmill this morning.

I made a skirt. Not sure if it's going to be used in any of my costumes but I wanted to prove I could make one before the time came to you know, actually make one. The problem is it doesn't match the top I currently have so I may have to work getting a new top or find skirt fabric that matches better. That isn't a big deal though since either way my 10k costume is half done. I have to make one more running skirt for the 5k for my Dreamfinder costume. My friend's favorite is Figment and we figured in the 5k is all in Epcot it would be a cool costume pair. Then for the 1/2 I may do a costume but I'm not confident about that yet because I want to be more focused on running.

I registered for a local 10k over the weekend to give me the ability to run better a 10k from a race I ran back in July in the hopes of having a better POT to submit for GSC. I was excited and eager. I had an amazing first mile knowing I was looking to PR. Then I ran into hills. And lots of them. No worries, I figured them out and my pace during mile 3 & 5 really helped even out the pace due to the hills. I was definitely on track to PR and even beat my A goal. I was excited. And then as we do the turn around to finish the last .8 miles, the race was feeling short. I saw the finish line right in front of me. I saw the official race clock and I knew something was off - no way did I get a PR by almost 9 minutes. Nope. Turns out they shorted the actual distance of the race. It was 5.4 miles rather than the official 6.2. I was so incredibly pissed & frustrated because it could have easily been avoided if they made the turnaround down a little further on the road they had it on. I contacted the race and all I got was "oh someone must have made an mistake with the markers, sorry for that."
Okay, vent over - I just needed to get that out there.

I just noticed you are in NN... we were there for four years and still own a house there. I wonder if my house is still standing!

How frustrating!!!

I wore my new capri skirt today and it definitely won't work for a race. The pocket was deep enough for my beans but not for my iphone 5 and I plan to have a 6 by then which is even bigger. The shirt kept riding up. But I still managed to do the 20 minute run I was scheduled for.

@Luv2Run congrats on your engagement!!

@IrishMel21 that SUCKS!! How frustrating! I had something similar happen for a local 5K race (I'd trained specifically for it and was hoping to PR) and the race distance was something like 2.75 miles instead of 3.1. But at least I wasn't trying to use it for proof of time...are there any other races you can try?

My outfits are pretty much set, I just need to decide if I want to add one thing to one of them, and I need to decide which outfit I want to wear for each race. :confused3 Admittedly I'm putting way less effort into what I am wearing this time around, but it's still all stuff I like and I know works for me, and I just don't want to spend the cash on buying a bunch of new stuff just for this weekend. Better to save that money for merchandise! :teeth:

@IrishMel21 Wow, that's screwed up. I mean it's a honest mistake (though I would expect someone to double check that) but it really messes you up for PoT. Luckily you had a previous race to fall back on but still.

The storm wasn't as bad as we had feared it would get (thank goodness!). I was very worried we'd lose power or have a tree come crashing down on our house or experience tidal flooding, but thankfully none of that happened. Schools all over are closed for the day, but most everything else (military bases, the shipyard, local businesses) are open today. The only major flooding I've seen has been in Poquoson, Hampton, Norfolk, and parts of Virginia Beach.

Our costumes are done. My sister and I are going as Flotsam and Jetsam. They were really more "inspired by" costumes. Basically a tank and capris in the right color with socks to match and we each get one yellow wristband and one white one. I'm not sure if we'll add anything else.

I used to live there. I remember a hurricane came through in 1999 that dropped so much water on the area, we went canoeing down our street.

My fiance's boss lives in a flooded area. He posted pictures yesterday on FB of him kayaking in his front yard, lol. Needless to say, they had the day off today. If the boss can't make it in, then there's no one to run the business, so hey, free day off.

Congratulations on earning your degree & getting engaged!

I'm working on my costumes. My boyfriend & I are going to wear matching shirts I got on rawthreads which represents where we met for the 5k. Then I think we're going to do a Han Solo/Princess Leia thing for the 10k. I found the shirts for us on etsy which are super cute. He can wear his normal shorts and I am going to order a white sparkle skirt to look more like Leia. And then I'm running the half by myself and I want it to be Cinderella so I have to figure that one out still. I'm in the debating phase right now of "do I use what I wore last year's 10k and change it up a smidge or come up with something completely different".

I'm trying to decide if I want leggings and a skirt or if I want a skirt and socks. Do I want a tank top or a long sleeved shirt? The weather is so unpredictable in February!

So true!!! I did PHM is 2011 and it was hot!! I had brought a short sleeve shirt and had to go out the day before and buy a tank top so I wouldn't be miserable!!!

I ran a 10k race yesterday. Ended up finishing in 1:03:38. That was a 10:15 pace. Overall I was happy. I would have loved to finish in under an hour. But it was a pretty hilly course. I was very happy that each mile was faster than the last: 11:13, 10:35, 10:06, 9:53, 9:35, and 9:01. I felt good at mile 5 and decided to push the pace and got a wicked stitch in my side. That was the first time that has happened in a while. Not sure if it was trying to do to much, or the cold weather, or the oatmeal I had for breakfast (sticks to your inners!). I have two more races planned for this fall so far. A 10-miler on the 18th and another 10k on November 1.

Congratulations! I love the feeling of running faster than expected at race (and vice versa- I hate when I think I ran faster than I ended up running!).

How is everyone coming on their costumes? I have to rethink mine. My pink polka dot capri skirt finally arrived and it is not what I was hoping for. There isn't nearly enough compression! The top I bought is rolling up just with me walking around the house so I know it won't survive six miles without driving me bonkers. Plan B: order a skirt without the underpants and then order some compression tights from Athleta (I just wish they had more colors in their capri skirts!) and then order one of their tops that have the compression and the no-rise band at the bottom. I have some hot pink compression socks, but if it is warm, I don't want them over the leggings and if it is cold, I need more than just a skirt and socks!

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM WEARING FOR THE HALF! If you can't tell, I'm starting to panic just a tad. ;) DBF is in the process of moving from VA to NC, so I know she has a lot going on can't really think about Princess weekend right now, but I am the type that wants everything planned WELL in advance. At this point, all we have decided is we want to do some kind of pair (like two characters from the same movie, or the same character in two different outfits, or both of us be villians, etc)

That is super frustrating. I think I would have asked for a refund, especially if the reason you signed up for the race was to get a POT.

I'd say prepare for all possible scenarios...

Totally agree with @Ariel484, plan ways to adjust for both. I did GSC 2014 & 2015. There was a solid 40 degree difference between the start of the 5k in 2015 (32 degrees) and when I finished the half in 2014 (mid 70s and crazy humid). This is why I don't go full on costume, but more themed running stuff, because I can always add layers for cold or pare down for heat. I had to wear my homemade Anna tank over a sweatshirt for the 5k this year it was so cold. For the 2014 half I had to forgo my favorite capri running pants and instead wear shorts under my Sleeping Beauty tutu because it was so hot.
