Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

I'm not a morning person either, and have never done anything to prepare for runDisney early mornings. I'm usually excited enough about the race to get going without too much difficulty. (Getting teen son who wanted to register for these things out the door with me is another story.) At least WDW/DL conditions are better than the local 5K races we run 20 degree temps!
Oh yes, don't get me wrong. I may not be a morning person, but I KNOW I will be so excited to be running through Disney that that won't matter!

What time zone do you live in? I'm on Pacific time, so it is still nighttime when I get up for this race! Somehow I manage though.

Do you think being on the first bus on Thursday to the expo is early enough or should I look into a taxi or uber from the Beach Club? I was hoping to sleep in a little (but be down and ready to go at the bus stop by 9ish) and be there at opening for expo to check out merchandise....

runDisney - I'm not even going to get my hopes up for waivers tomorrow, but it would be a GREAT birthday present if you released the waivers tomorrow!!!

4 miles outside yesterday. Slow but done. Fighting a sinus infection/cold. I'm so glad we only signed up for the 5 and 10k. I would be so screwed if we would have signed up for the half.

That's what we did last year, the 5K and 10K. They were my first races EVER! I was "not a runner". It was such an accomplishment for me. And we got to play in an empty Magic Kingdom Sunday morning!

I had this exact conversation with DH yesterday! "It's only a 5 mile run today. Wait, did I just say JUST 5 MILES??" :) I have come so far in less than a year! I am so proud of myself lol!

Seriously, I was the kid failing PE in high school & college because I couldn't run a mile. Now I run 13! Say what?!?!?! I think we should all be so proud of ourselves!

I'm also staying at the Beach Club

I think you'll be fine getting on the first bus, unless you need a Dooney and haven't preordered.

No kidding! I was always one of those people who said I'd only run when chased, and I'd get in trouble for not running in PE!

I have always felt like I'm more of a Luna. Maybe not as out there

I'm totally Luna. I was also Phoebe. But more out there than Phoebe. ;)

and don't really care how many people like me.

I'm still working on that. I try to tell my truth, I try to help people. My tone is all off online and I run into troubles I don't run into "IRL". But I try.

Thanks bumbershoot! Had you ever seen Zensahs at the expo?

I haven't. I got mine from roadrunner and/or amazon.

Oh. Training.

Probably should get that started this week ... :guilty:

Well, we all know how little you've been running the last month. ;)

I'm so glad we only signed up for the 5 and 10k. I would be so screwed if we would have signed up for the half.

I might not be screwed, but I would ruin my weekend, that's for sure! I've been sitting on my hands, NOT buying the GSC bibs that keep coming up, even after I found out we can get a refund on what we'd already registered for through rundisney! (I tell you, that knowledge changed my life and made me kinda sad for the past, since I didn't know it)

4 miles for me... But I had to walk the last one :/ My legs are still bothering me and I know I need to take time off but it's so close! My calves are so tight and my hamstrings are sore but nothing I do seems to help them.

Epsom salts bath? Arnica cream. Gentle stretching. Restorative Yoga class? Chiropractic visit? Massage? Acupuncture?

I was doing my (most definitely NOT restorative) yoga class tonight. The class focus is on hamstrings from today through next Friday. Last week the peak of the class was twisted arm balances which I didn't know I actually could do until last Sunday! So I'm thinking "yay, hamstrings"! And we did this one rather long sequence on one side, then the other, and I thought "yay!" until I went to move my left leg. And, uh oh. I spent the rest of the class a beat behind everyone convincing my leg to do the things, and wondering if I should just leave and follow the advice I just gave you, or if I should keep going but just be gentle. Tomorrow will tell me more!

I live at 5,000 feet and I guess I'm hoping someone will tell me it's easier to run at the lower elevation at DW.

It's easier. There's a reason that people train "at altitude". As the other Princess mentioned, that's why the Olympic training center is in CO.

I have not received any emails since last summer when we signed up. Should we be worried?

There have been some that you've missed. I wouldn't worry, though. The Event Guide is out and you can find the link to it on the rundisney page for Runner Info. Soon the bib info will be out, which comes with waivers to print. You'll get all the info you need here. Oh, and I don't even print the waivers at home anymore; my printer is horrid and I tend to lose them during travel. So I just print them out at the expo; they have banks of computers and printers specifically for that purpose!

I heard you should not wear headphones, do they play music along the course? Also, what time do you need to get on the buses the morning of the race?

They say that, but...you CAN hear the safety announcements over headphones, and they are pretty much just telling you that there are speedbumps ahead, etc. At those spots there are also lights and volunteers holding flashlights and pointing them at the bumps, etc. They play music in SOME spots.

If ANYONE is looking for a bib, there are a couple of charities that have posted to the Princess FB group that they are offering bibs until Midnight tonight with NO fundraising requirement.

Which FB group? I don't see any posts from today about charities on the group I'm in. Of course, I doubt they're working in Pacific time and I only have 20 minutes left of that anyway.

Augh, see my mention above of sitting on my hands so I don't do this, but apparently I like shirts and medals and not being able to walk.

Cue my rant about how rD appropriates bibs ...
No fundraising requirements? That seems the opposite of what charities should do.

Wow! I imagine you still have to pay registration fees though right?

I was able to get in 4.5 miles on Saturday, and 9 miles yesterday. Saturday's run was really nice and easy with cool temps and a 9:43/mile pace, but yesterday's run was...rough. I had a migraine the whole time, and felt a flare-up of tendonitis in my ankle around mile 4. I also think the warmer temps took its toll on my pace. I still averaged 10:12/mile pace, which is good, but I was just not feeling well at the end of it. I'm hoping next weekend's 10-miler isn't like yesterday's long run.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! :bday:

How's the weekend training going for everyone? I did 5.5 miles yesterday and 10 miles today. My first outside runs since Jan 1.

Due to lack of babysitting, I was only able to get a short run (2.12 miles) in on Sunday was my son was in CCD, but the pace was good. I'll take it. This coming weekend, I'm doing my last long run.

Seriously, I was the kid failing PE in high school & college because I couldn't run a mile. Now I run 13! Say what?!?!?! I think we should all be so proud of ourselves!
I have had dreams of finding my middle school PE teacher to show him my half marathon medal! I couldn't even run the mile in middle school.

I did 4.5 miles on Saturday and 5.5 miles Sunday. It's funny while I was running I kept telling myself "what am I doing, I can't do this, I must be a complete fool" yet as I was stretching after, all I could think was "wow, I feel great!"

Did 13.1 miles today!! I can't believe it! I'm signed up for the half so I've been working towards it, but I guess I hadn't yet believed I could do it. Almost started crying at track. Lol

That is great! I almost lost it at my first double digit race....you should be so proud of yourself!

First I would like to say that this year's thread ( and I have been here every year) has been very positive and everyone is getting in their miles and listen to their bodies and adjusting as necessary. It is fun to come and see how everyone is doing and progressing...believe me there has been years of wining about not getting in mile and so many injuries..but not this year..Keep up the great work!:flower1:

As for me...I got in those 12 miles this morning and under 2 hours!!!:yay: I would like to request 50 degree weather and party cloudy and low humidity this year...a girl can always dream. Anyway I am on a high as I was unsure about my training on the TM. We got a new one the first of December and it was kicking my butt and I kept thinking this TM has to be off and it must be.

I try to help people too, but I don't really worry about what others think. I'm an introvert, and it's taken me a long time to accept that.

Augh, see my mention above of sitting on my hands so I don't do this, but apparently I like shirts and medals and not being able to walk.

Don't we all? lol

Could someone give me the rundown on how to get a Dooney? Apparently I missed where you could pre-order, boo! Any tips would be great! I have been holding off purchasing any other Disney Dooneys from previous trips to get one for my first half :)

Ok thanks that's good to hear from someone with experience! And yes, I am sooooo dreading that crazy early wake up call. I promised myself I would "sleep train" myself and start going to bed early and waking up like at 5:00 after the holidays to get somewhat used to it all. Have I done that even once? No I have not. I am not a morning person lol
One of the girls in our group is a baker, she's at work by something like 3:30 AM. She joked that she's definitely going to be the most alert of all of us on race day!
