Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

I'm actually in western Massachusetts, so i saw the flurries. I was running (inside) during them. I need to get myself to run outside in the winter, but where I live, the snow piled from on the roads from the plows makes neighborhood runs impossible and I think our rail trail remains unplowed during the winter. Don't know for sure as I wasnt a runner last winter...

Yeah, I live in what was up until one last snowstorm, the snowiest large city in America for a good part of the winter. Neighborhood runs do get tough. We had snow piles so tall last year the kids could climb them and change streetlight bulbs in some places. It was nuts. I would still do my 3 milers midweek locally, but it was full daylight, and a low traffic area and time. But I'd actually go park somewhere and and run on a road that had a wide shoulder that was mostly plowed for my long runs. I'd run north x miles and back the same to get those runs in. The rail trail I use most often now is not plowed in winter. It is used by snowshoers mostly then.

Here's hoping this year is at least a little less snowy both for training and so we don't have issues flying out. My flight for GSC 2014 got cancelled, and for 2015 I made it but there was a blizzard the day before I left and a storm the day after, so it was a close call!

No Soarin' during Princess weekend! Wahhhh.

Though, not gonna lie...I am REALLY looking forward to those screens getting cleaned up, if that's what this refurb is for! :)

Ohhhhh I didn't see that yet! Oh man, I was really hoping this would be my year to finally get in that ride!

I had the same thought yesterday when I went out for my 10 mile run. I run outside all winter, but this was a sudden temperature change. I ran in capris and a tank on Thursday and I still had the AC on at this time last week, so to have it be 23 when I woke up yesterday was just too soon for this. I don't know about Boston, but out in Central Ma/Metro west we had snow flurries yesterday. Crazy!

Great job on the 10k!

Thanks!

The snow flurries were definitely scattered. They were not happening in Boston where I was or in MetroWest later that afternoon, at least around me. But I know lots of friends & family that had decent snow falling from the sky. And it's definitely too early for this weather!

You're braver than I! I can't bring myself to run outside during the winter (with snow on the ground and temps below 30). I'm a wuss and will use the treadmill instead.

Y'all are way more brave than I am. It is 60's here and I'm putting on the electric blanket and wearing sweaters!

My spasm in my calf isn't letting up. I'm hoping they can do something for me today at physical therapy.

I wouldn't say brave, I'd say determined. I despise the treadmill. And, more importantly I tend to have a lot more pain on treadmill runs. It just isn't good for me. That said in 2014 I did a 12 miler on the treadmill due to no roads I felt safe on because of a big storm the day before, and last year I did 10 miles where 5 were on the treadmill, then the waiting line for treadmills forced me off, and the last 5 were on my gyms indoor track, where 19 laps = 1 mile. Thats right 95 laps. Blech. Both were just miserable for me. So, I would rather throw on lots of layers and find a clear stretch of road.

Question for the frequent racers? What do you do between races? I am just over 4 weeks away from Avengers weekend, and the running the Infinity Gauntlet challenge out there. It will be 14 weeks between races. I've always had a much longer span between races. Would you start back at the beginning of a training program, or keep your long runs at the higher end? I feel like I want the 10k to be very comfortable, sort of like its just another run. So I am thinking I should keep my long runs at that distance for a minimum to keep my mileage up. I am also struggling with back to back on weekends due to scheduling. So I am thinking of going to a Tu-We-Th plus a long run on the weekend schedule. With the Wednesday run getting progressively longer as the race draws closer, sort of Higdon like, but with back to backs every other weekend as well. Thoughts?

@DVCFan1994 personally I would do short runs for a couple of weeks after Avengers and then pick up at 12-week training plan for Princess, starting at the beginning to give myself a break both mentally and physically. But everyone is different! :)

Thanks for the advice @Ariel484. That is was my initial plan. But now I am second guessing myself thinking ahead to winter. I am wondering if maybe by keeping long runs higher (10k+) it would help me be better prepared for weekends when the weather messes with my plans. But I also don't want to get into an overtraining situation. Hmmm. Guess its best to wait and see how I am actually feeling after Avengers.

Wow that is true dedication! 5 miles on the treadmill and then 95 laps on a track sounds like sheer torture!! That shows a lot of mental fortitude though, so congratulations for making it through! ;)

I ran two halves two months apart a couple of years ago. I took a complete week off after the first half, the next week did a couple of 3 mile runs, and a 5 or 6 mile run, then picked up a training schedule counting backwards from the second half marathon. I felt so prepared, and I PR'd for that second half. A time of 1:58, which I KNOW I will never run again lol

That's amazing - kudos to you! :)

I'm trying to be patient, but I'm on pins & needles waiting for my 10k race on Sunday to post the official results so I can submit my PHM POT.
Apparently I'm not that patient this week o_O

I would be anxious as well. I always start looking the moment I get home! Hopefully it will be soon!

There is absolutely no shame in walking !!! You still have 4 1/2 months to go so plenty of time to get up to 10 or 11 miles before PHM. For my first one DH and I only went up to 10 miles and no problems finishing the race in an upright position !
Thank you so much for your encouragement. This is what I come to this board for. I got Jeff Galloway's half marathon app and started today.

I am running the Princess half in February. I've ran many half and full marathons but never at Disney. In fact this will be my first trip to Disney as well as my family. I am getting really nervous about logistics to expo and then start line. is there transportation from all resorts on property? I will be going to start alone :(. Just wanting to know what to expect.

Thanks!

The provided transportation works well...just be on the bus when the info says to be on bus. I like the 3:30-3:45 bus in the morning. I have been to the start line a few times by myself...very easy to chat up some one.

If you're doing back to back races, I'd highly recommend fitting in some back to back training runs at some point. Your body needs to get used to running on tired legs.

Everything is pretty easy to navigate and there are people everywhere, both alone and in groups. We all love Disney and we all love running, so it's pretty easy to strike up a conversation with someone.

.

Yes, I am doing the challenge. Avengers will be my 2nd set of challenge races this year, and this will be my third GSC in February. I try to get in back to backs on weekends when I can. But my schedule lately has made that much harder than usual. That's why I'm toying with the idea of 3 mid week runs, to get my legs used to running tired. Then, every other or third weekend I would do back to backs incorporating the long run. My last two GSCs the back to backs were much easier to fit in. But this year I fear a bunch of scheduling issues will really make my weekend training harder. Trying to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
