Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

The tight calf is slightly better this morning. I soaked in the tub, with epsom salts, for about 45 minutes last night. Used my voltaren gel, stretched a bunch, laid on my spikey ball and took Advil pm before bed. It still hurts to touch though. I was supposed to run this morning and do pilates but I'm going to just rest instead. I don't want to aggravate the muscle!

I did a 10K on Saturday that was only so-so for me. I was unfamiliar with the course (up & down hills, more like a trail run), coupled with just getting over a cold, so I came in about 5 minutes slower than I had hoped for with a chip time of 1:03:31. I have another 10K on Halloween that I'm hoping for a sub-1 hour PR that I can use for my POT for the PHM (haha, that's a lot of acronyms!). The course for the upcoming 10K is flat, so it should be much easier than the one this past weekend.

That's the smart thing to do. I've learned the hard way to listen to my body.

I ran a 10-miler yesterday. Finished just shy of 1:46. That's better than I expected. I did stop to walk on two of the hills. But I'm pretty psyched. Ten miles isn't so far from 13.1! I have never run that far in my life! My knees and feet are pretty sore today.

It will be tough to keep things up this winter. I am joining the gym to do my weekday runs since there won't be any daylight soon!

I did a 10-miler yesterday as well. I was way slower than @srauseo (coming in just shy of 2:10) but I ran the whole way and I actually got first (and only so also last) in my gender/age division. I've never gone that far but it was a lot of fun and I got a PR that will jump me up a few corrals which is awesome. Overall it went way better than I thought it would. I half expected to be picked up for running too slow.

Finally ran a race for Pot! Just submitted it and it gave me a 3:06 anticipated finish. I ran a 10k on Saturday, my first race ever! I wrote about it on the W&D page so I won't duplicate it here, but very happy with my results, 1:24:33 with 13:37 average pace. I had my fastest mile too, a 12:38. And the course had killer hills! :) I guess I will see how I do in the W&D half to see if that would give me a better anticipated finish. But at least I have a Pot submitted!

a few weeks ago, I mentioned how I registered for a local 10k (sponsored by a pretty big sneaker company) and I was all excited to use that as my POT for PHM. But the race organizers screwed up the race and shortened the distance (Only 5.5 and not 6.2), and didn't apologize or take responsibility. Because of that I won't/can't use that as my POT. Thankfully I found another local 10k race sponsored by Boston Firefighters and being held in my hometown, I knew I had to do it.

It was held yesterday morning and it was SO COLD (being near the water didn't help), but thankfully the sun was nice & bright. I wore long pants, long compression socks, long sleeved tech shirt under a short sleeve tech shirt. And then I wore a zip up over that with some fingerless gloves. I was still freezing.

Organizers of the race did a great job! They had water, bananas & orange slices pre & post race. The course was great (mostly flat with some inclines) & well laid out with plenty of volunteers on the course & 4 water stations. They also had free Sam Adams & other free stuff post race. I would definitely love to do this race again next year.

As for my own race, my goal was to beat my last 10k and aim for 1:02 or under. My dream goal would be to get a sub hour pace. Because of the course, the hometown love & the desire to warm up quick, I managed to really get into this. I was in my mind early to find a comfortable pace and stick with it, and that's what I did. Mile 2 is my nemesis and this wasn't even an issue for me. I had a great consistent pace the whole time. My plan was to only stop briefly at the water stations but that was it. And somehow I managed just that through 5.3 miles. I took a small break and realized that if I kept on doing what I was doing I could actually finish in under an hour. I hustled. I got into a good groove and went for it. With a slight incline at the end, I managed to go into sprint mode for the last .5 and saw the finish line & clock and that I would definitely be under an hour. In fact, only 4 seconds above 59 mins. I was so happy with my time and how I felt.

For me, it paid to have patience, find another race because my planned 'POT Race' didn't originally work out!

Congrats on your time! That race sounds like the Frozen 5K this year. The name fit, for sure! I was back in my room for a couple of hours and a hot shower before I was warmed up properly!

Thanks! I did the Frozen 5k this year too and kept thinking if I can do that, then I can do this one too.

I have a similar mentality - whenever I see a cold weather race, I think that if I can survive the Frozen 5K, I can survive anything.

Congrats on your awesome race!

I love seeing all of the 10Ks and other races people have been doing! I don't have another one scheduled until Princess, so it's fun to see the excitement through others!

I had the same thought yesterday when I went out for my 10 mile run. I run outside all winter, but this was a sudden temperature change. I ran in capris and a tank on Thursday and I still had the AC on at this time last week, so to have it be 23 when I woke up yesterday was just too soon for this. I don't know about Boston, but out in Central Ma/Metro west we had snow flurries yesterday. Crazy!

Great job on the 10k!

Great job on the 10k!

I'm actually in western Massachusetts, so i saw the flurries. I was running (inside) during them. I need to get myself to run outside in the winter, but where I live, the snow piled from on the roads from the plows makes neighborhood runs impossible and I think our rail trail remains unplowed during the winter. Don't know for sure as I wasnt a runner last winter...
