Official 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Thread.

Based on prices for both Star Wars and Tinkerbell I would think they would remain:

Disneyland Half Marathon
•$195

Dumbo Double Dare
•$320

Disneyland 10K
•$105

Disneyland 5K
•$70

I wouldn't think they would move prices in the middle of the year.

Pretty close, but apparently a tad under. I came across the Active.com registration site (currently not operative) via a facebook link: http://www.active.com/anaheim-fl/ru...g-races/disneyland-half-marathon-weekend-2015

Okay. My question seems silly to me, but when DH and I register for the half, can we do it at once, as we only have 1 laptop? Or is it individual registration? I know I registered through Active.com, but I cant remember if it gave the option for more than 1 registration at a time.
Thanks!

Something like that! I think the fees are around 7%...

I gotta start saving my allowance if I want to do a split stay between the Marriott (well, Fairfield that I'm getting for next to nothing) and the PPH. :sad2:

Looks like I'm going to have to give up some Happy Hours.

How quickly do the races fill up? and what time is registration?

I think I remember reading last year that Dumbo sold out in something crazy like 15 minutes. The whole weekend was sold out within two hours, but I know you can still get bibs into the half through travel providers - generally you can buy a registration if you buy a park ticket through them or something, so just keep that in mind!

I believe registration starts at Noon EST.

WDW Half Marathon 2015 – Trip Report

Last week I ran my first Half Marathon during the WDW Marathon weekend. It was a mixed bag for me race wise. Let’s start with a pop quiz:

In preparation for this first race of the New Year did I:
1. Do no training runs for pretty much all of December
2. Put on about 6 pounds of holiday cheer
3. Get a grand total of 2 hours sleep before leaving for Florida?
4. Have a flair up of viral arthritis the morning of the race in my right foot making every step painful?

The answer of course is “All of The Above”. Not my proudest moment in race preparation. Still the trip was mostly pre-paid/non-refundable so what the hell off we go.

Transportation and the Expo
I landed at Orlando International Airport Friday morning and used the Disney Magic Express Bus to transition to WDW. I’d booked a room at the Port Orleans French Quarter because it’s right next to where the Corrals are located. Which it turns out was pointless because you are prohibited from walking to the corrals from any of the resorts. You must use the bus. Lesson learned. I landed at 9:30am, was on the bus by 9:45, the bus arrived at my hotel at 10:40am. From there I headed to the Expo. During race weekend Disney runs dedicated buses from all the resorts to/from the Expo so I arrived at the Expo at 11:20am. Total time from landing at the airport to entering the Expo using only free Disney transportation: 1hr 50min. Not bad.
The Expo itself as a total zoo. Getting my waver turned in, and my race packet picked up was a 5-min task. As was getting the T-Shirt and race bag, but the main floor of the expo was so packed you could hardly move. I quickly gave up and beat feet for Animal Kingdom. Hit up a few attractions before heading back to my hotel, and a pasta dinner at the Port Orleans Riverside cafeteria. They have a custom pasta bar that was just the thing, then back to my room and was fast asleep by 6:00pm (made easy I suppose by the two hours of sleep the night prior).

Pre-Race
For me race day started at 3:00am when the first of my three separate alarms went off (phone, watch, hotel clock-radio – Having backups makes me sleep easier). I got out of bed, only to wince in pain from my right ankle, and the aforementioned “Viral Arthritis”. A condition that seems to dog me pre and/or post colds. Really bad timing, but knowing this happens from time to time I always travel with some good Anti-Inflammatory pills (Advil in this case). I popped my pills, ate a banana, had a quick shower and was out the door by 3:30am heading for the race bus. Burrr, it was a cold morning. I brought with me a pair of old sweats, I think they were my sons when he was about 12, so I looked ridiculous but at least I stayed warm and tossed them to the side of the course as the race was about to star. The mood was festive despite the cold weather. Do note, it’s over a mile from the bus-drop off to the corrals so be sure to leave time for that walk. I really enjoy the pre-race banter with the other runners. That’s the main reason I like to get to the corral as soon as they open. I was in Corral ‘L’ . Meaning 11 corrals went off ahead of us. Each time one left we would be marched up one more spot until it was finally our time to start. I was right next to the 3-Hour balloon pace team as we crossed the starting line.

The Race
What I can say, it was miserable for me. A combination of my pathetic preparation and the fact that every step sent a dull sense of pain up my leg did a lot to sap my spirit. Still being a stubborn old man, I refused to give up on my goal to finish in less than three hours so I took off at a good clip, leaving the 3-hour pacer behind me. In fact around mile 4 I spotted an earlier race pace balloon guy, I was pretty excited at my pace and decided I’d do my best to catch them and then just hang with them until the end ensuring my sub 3 hour finish. So another mile later, I caught up with them only to find out I’d been struggling to catch the same guy I started next to. *sigh* At some point they had passed me and I never saw them. That was a dark moment. I was angry. Very angry. At myself, at those stupid balloons, at pretty much everyone and everything. It turns out anger trumps pain. By the time we left the Magic Kingdom I had a good lead on the 3-hour balloons, and I never looked back. I finished at 2:57:12. Numb and shaking, but still standing. I’ll never again enter a race that unprepared (more on that soon).

Post Race
After the race, I had a good cool down period, felt good enough (just) to visit the Magic Kingdom, had a nice lunch at the “Be Our Guest” restaurant, hit a few attractions before meeting an old Imagineering friend for a nice crab dinner in Downtown Disney. Chatting with random race folks the entire day is always a great part of the RunDisney Experience. An instant extended family, I love it!!! I can’t wait for September at the Disneyland Resort to do a Dumbo!

Color me confused and I can't quiet get to the Disneyland AP page registration page (and Disney Worlds page is showing nothing) right now so I might be wrong. But isn't pre reg a week before regular registration? Which would be the 3rd since it opens for everyone on the 10th?

With 228 Days until the start of the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, let's talk training. I don't want a repeat of my WDW experience!

First up, would anyone like to be fitbit buddies? I'm just started using one and I'm already addicted. It's great motivation to see what other people are doing. If you would like to be fitbit buddies you can hit me up via my FaceBook page or a PM here.

I'm going to try the 19-week Galloway Dumbo Double Dare Training plan from the RunDisney Website. This year that plan will start the week of May 4th.

Which leaves me 16-weeks between now and May 4th to train for the training plan. :)
I'm going to start with the Galloway Disneyland 1/2 Marathon plan for new runners. Since that is also a 19 week plan I'll start it in week 3 so I can finish it out in time to start the Dumbo plan.

I'm also thinking about finding a local 1/2 Marathon somewhere around the first week of May to check my progress and hopefully have a better time to submit for the Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare. Any other runners in the Washington DC area?

SgtTibbs - thanks for the confirmation on the January 27 date for AP holders! I saw that somewhere else but the person didn't say where they'd read it.

Training - I'm going to use a Hal Higdon plan. Not sure which one yet. :) I have a 10K and a 10-miler on my schedule for this year so that'll keep me busy in the meantime.

Holy cow. Hal Higdon is (from my relatively newbie point of view) intense. I don't know that I'd be ready for even the "Novice" plan. Hats off to you! I'll see you at the finish line, where you will have had time to shower, change clothes and had lunch at a fine dining establishment before I catch up. :)

Oh, and nice trip report! Thanks for posting that.

You're too kind. :) I'm one of *those* folks that stops for all the pictures so I won't be breaking any records!

Thanks for the kind words on the trip report. :)

My wife and I ran the Frederick Half Marathon last year the first weekend in May, not sure if it is the same time this year. Not too far from DC.

Flying Pirate in OBX is another option but that is mid April.

Either should work well with your training plan

I started out initially planning to go with the Galloway plan, but with so far until the Disneyland Half, I was getting bored with it.

I've been using a combination of RunKeeper's Half training program and a local weekend running group as my training, with my ultimate goal being to get to my fastest qualifying 10k finish by the end of May and then spending the following three months conditioning out to the half distance.

I've got my first-ever 10k next weekend in New Orleans, so I'm excited/nervous!

I'm using a random 10k time improver program that I found on the internet for now. My first goal is to get the 10k time I need to get a good corral. I have a 10k about once a month until the end of May so I'll have a few opportunities.

When the Galloway programs begin in May I plan to do the intermediate finishing upright one.

Does anyone know when the cutoff to submit a proof of time for Dumbo likely will be? I'm working on planning my local races (and local race budget).

At this point I'm also debating whether it's better to aim for a 11-12 min/mile 10k (which will be a stretch for me as a newer & slower runner), or to try for a 14 min/mile half. I'm just trying to avoid the last corral for Dumbo.

I've heard that Disney/Track Shack uses the McMillan calculator to determine estimated finish times based on proof of time. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, how does that work for determining Dumbo corrals? I remember seeing a lot of posts last year from Dumbo runners who had worked on submitting a better proof of time but still ended up in the last corral for one or both races.
