Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

I posted this another thread, but I really don't like the idea of the Castaway Cay Challenge for some reason...here's my biggest question:

The race fee will include a race bib, t-shirt, 5k Medal, Challenge Medal and a post race refreshment.
This part of the post really stuck out to me. Currently, it doesn't cost anything to run the Castaway Cay 5K. Are they going to start charging everyone to run it, or just those doing the challenge, I wonder?

A lot of people figured that once rundisney got involved on Castaway that eventually people would have to pay. In fact many people on the Disney Cruise threads really WANT there to be a charge.

Today I've talked with rundisney and disneycruise, and, as usual, this was rolled out in "boom here it is" fashion. No one knows much of anything. I would have asked the rundisney guy if normal people would still be able to run this on this cruise, but I had NO faith he would have a clue as to what I was talking about. :crazy2:

Why do they want a charge? Thanks! :)

They think that a charge would allow them to get a shirt and a proper medal. I think they don't realize that 5K medals (apart from Expedition Everest) are just rubber anyway, not THAT far off from the simple plastic medals already given out.

I also can't help but think that the ones wanting a charge don't quite understand how much rundisney tends to charge, how HARD it is to sign up for things, and that the costs keep on going up.

I'm definitely not in the camp of wanting a fee. And I can see that this is going to become a slippery slope. Lots of commentors on the rundisney (and disneycruise) posts about it on FB talk about why can't they have this challenge after, and even before, ALL rundisney events, and honestly...why can't they? I think they are going to see that people want this, they'll start having it, and then suddenly there won't be any casual 5K anymore.

thhhhppppthhht.

And I have a feeling that I'm going to be part of the inaugural problem....:faint::duck:

And more of the magic dies... this was a nice "freebie" for the cruisers. If it was a one time thing for the "marathon cruise" cool... but I agree. It will probably be a huge success because we are all nuts and sign up for these things ASAP. Then they will offer it for other races and cruise combos. Why not?

I know there were issues with the event on castaway cay, but hey, you are on vacation and get to run a free 5K? For a runner, that's a good deal. lol

I now have a much better proof time and will start closer to the front this year, but if you do start in the back its not terrible, you just have to be patient.

My fear of being in the last corral is the wait before heading off and the weather. Also, being swept. I am new to it all.. really became "serious" in October 2013 and threw myself into a Half four months later. I finished in 3 hours and 17 mins with a groin strain from over training which was crippling me and two bathroom breaks where I had to wait for my running partner. I think we could have done it in 3hours. Excellent course in Miami, very flat and we started in the second to last corral. The only course issue was a lot of weaving that added nearly an extra mile to my race.

I did the Galloway and except for one blister, hips that were a little sore and the groin strain, I felt great aftwards.

Can we use a 10k or the TOT 10 miler as proof? I really would like to corral up.

From rundisney's 2015 marathon weekend event pages:

Proof of time must be provided from a certified race reflecting results after January 1, 2013.

Half Marathon - 10K or longer.
Full Marathon - 10 Miles or longer

A valid proof of time provided at the time of registration must include the following*:

Name of Race
Distance
City
State
Date
Finish time

*For example, Walt Disney World Marathon, 26.2, Orlando, FL, 1/13/13, - 3:35

And very very important:

No corral changes will be made after October 10, 2014.

So yep, you could use this year's TOT if you get your info in fast!

I thought they'd eventually charge for it too. :sad2: And I too have seen people say they want there to be a charge to sign up, not just for the shirt and medal but also because they think it's a way for people to get off the ship early and be among the first at Castaway Cay - they sign up for the race, get off the ship and don't run.

I agree! And what about non-marathon weekend people on that cruise that want to do the CC5K - are there leftover spots for them to run? They have to cap the spots at some point.

As far as running in cooler weather after a summer of training in FL, for sure - I'm easily a couple minutes per mile faster at the same perceived effort. It's nothing I specifically set out to do; it just happens. An added benefit is that if we do have warm temps in Jan (as happened this year for the half) we Floridians are well prepared; at 70*, I was in my element, not cursing the heat!

I have to say that as a novice my run in the 70* weather today on the FL panhandle was so much better than my run in the 90* weather two days ago! Thank God for a little cool down! I think I might have to start running before the sun is up...

I keep saying that (in central Alabama), but it's sooooo haaarrrd. Got down into the 50s here the last night, but rainy. Should have taken advantage of it anyway--I know that in a matter of weeks we'll bhave 90 degrees at dusk (with 80-90% humidity). Ugh.

If I were smart, I'd take advantage of the indoor track on campus where I work, but...it's where I *work*, and when that's over with for the day I'm just not inclined to hang around. My neighborhood is tremendously hilly, and my knees hurt pretty badly after too much of that. There's a walking/running track not far from home, just across the street from the local elementary school, but it's a tiny, tight little oval (2.25 laps/mile) and that gets really boring after a while. Ah, #runningproblems.

LOL, even the smallest hills feel like Mt. Everest to me when I'm running! :scared1: Seriously though, I could drive 30 minutes to the gym on base, but I'd have to do it when my husband or teenager got home and that's pretty much dinner time so as a mom to 3 that's no likely to happen so I have to suck it up and get out there regardless of the weather. So far though I have not convinced myself that waking up at 5am to run is fun. I need to get on that bandwagon though or else...:scared:

Uggh! Me either! I am not too worried about getting up the morning of the half though. Excitement/adrenaline will get me going!

Somehow I turned myself into one of those 5AM runners a few years back - it DOES get easier. Now that I'm used to it I really cannot imagine having to do my run when I come home after work, or staying at work later and using the gym here. I think I'd be so much more likely to blow it off. :confused3 I like knowing that the run is done already, and most days it does help to wake me up...

...of course when I say this I'm talking about the work week only. If it's not a work day I REALLY struggle to get out the door before 1PM or whatever. :upsidedow That's going to have to change in the summer. :crazy2:

Ditto this. It stinks when that alarm goes off, but the few times I've tried to run later in the day have been just terrible runs for me. I feel so much more sluggish on an afternoon run. I love the way I feel the rest of the day when I've had a morning run and really, once I'm up for 10 minutes or so it's just not that big of a deal. It's just that first motion of swinging myself out of bed that's tough! Not to mention that once summer hits full on, the heat in the afternoons makes running unbearable.

Like others, switched over about 3-4 years ago from afternoon workouts to morning workouts. I usually am able to get a 5-miler in before leaving for work. However, I usually have to rise by 4:15/4:30, drink a small cup of coffee to get the ....body going (unless I only want a 2-miler :rolleyes1), then off I go. Weights and cross-training same thing. All on an empty stomach.

To me, getting my run and/or workout in the morning is something I need, mentally and physically. My afternoons/evenings can be unpredictable, so I may not have the time I want in a straight shot without it taking away from my family time.

So getting up for Disney races isn't too much earlier than what I'd normally wake up.:thumbsup2
