Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Registered for the half yesterday with DH. We got confirmation emails but when we click on the link it says ATTENTION! You are not authorized to view this registration.
Anyone else have this problem?

I know exactly what you mean! That's an active.com issue...one they've had for years, unfortunately.

If you go through the "Confirm Registration" link, that works...although active.com's description in the email could be a little better there, too.

:confused3

Somehow me wanting to do the WDW Half marathon for my 40th birthday has morphed into a week-long vacation at Disney World, with my son and husband coming along for the ride...how the heck did that happen?!?

I just hope I'm getting the best prices for everything! flight - check, hotel - check...now just waiting for the packages to be released in the fall to determine if I need to change hotel reservations

Well, you should just think of them as your cheering squad! In their defense, if my mom was going to Disney alone, I would feel the need to make sure she had a travelling companion ;)

Please forgive my ignorance, but if I am just doing the 5k is this the right thread to be hanging around, or should I start a 5k thread?

:rotfl: My following up to an answer to a question is what got me to sign up for the Half. I had NO idea I was going to do this race again after a miserable one this year! And that's not even counting the Disneyland Half over Labor Day and the Wine&Dine 2 months later. Gotta hope the husband is sent on lots of work trips, so I can be sure to have the air miles!

Please forgive my ignorance, but if I am just doing the 5k is this the right thread to be hanging around, or should I start a 5k thread?

I, personally think it's fine. We're discussing the Half in here afterall. But for this year's Marathon weekend I think we ended up with a general weekend thread and a Half thread...so others might have different opinions. :)

Please forgive my ignorance, but if I am just doing the 5k is this the right thread to be hanging around, or should I start a 5k thread?

Hang around at your own peril - you'll probably wind up signing up for Dopey in 2016 :rotfl:

I think you're fine - it seems that everyone is discussing all of the races on this board

Just signed up for the marathon. Beyond excited.

I have a few questions. Please let me know if you think I should post separate queries in other sections of the forum.

1. Does it matter where we stay? Last June we didn't stay on resort as we were there for 2 weeks and we wanted to eat in the suburbs (how good is 4 rivers?!). Is being on resort a really good idea for the marathon or can we get away with being offsite again?

2. Which are the best places to stay onsite in terms of marathon morning. Any to avoid?

3. We will be flying in from the UK. Any ideas when to fly in? Ideally I would like to stick to UK time as a 3am start would be 8 am but I also don't want to be exhausted either. I have never raced after a long flight before.

4. How busy are the parks in the days before/after marathon? Is there a good park to do on Saturday and Sunday? Is it a lot quieter on Monday?

5. I fancy a pre-marathon carb load breakfast with characters. Last year we did one at Beach Club. I loved every minute of it although obviously it was all about the children! Any recommendations?

6. Out of curiosity, where can spectators see you running? I can't see the family getting up at 3am but they might turn up for the later stages.

7. Any tips for stuff I should be sorting out in the next few weeks?

Many thanks

Well I can help with question 1 and 4. We stayed offsite last year and it was no problem for us. We rented a car and drove in for the race start. We left our condo a little before 3 and traffic was very light. If you wait later, you could run into some traffic issues, but it's very manageable to stay off site

We have generally stayed a few days after the marathon. Saturday and Sunday are a bit busier, but not bad. We found Monday and Tuesday to be very light crowds.

1. I think this is a matter of perspective. I know some people who stay offsite and have no problems. Personally I prefer to just stay onsite and catch the first shuttle. Mainly because I've seen what the roads can look like if you just get a little bit of a too late start (Princess 1/2) even when on the bus! The road operates like normal until race starts for traffic so keep that in mind.

2. Again this is a your mileage will vary question. Some people have their personal preferences. The first time we did a runDisney event in Florida we picked a hotel that was decently priced near Epcot so the shuttle rides wouldn't be too long. We ended up at Port Orleans French Quarter. We still stay their every trip and love it. Note you cannot walk through Epcot to get to the start on race morning. So keep that in mind when looking at hotels and distances from the Epcot start.

3. Probably you want to get in a few days early just to let yourself adjust to the time. So your not dealing with jet lag on top of running the race. I have yet to do an overseas race but have traveled quiet a bit myself. And yeah I think I would want to give myself at least a least 3 days pre-race to adjust if I could afford it.

4. Can't really help you on that one. This is going to be my first WDW Marathon trip since 2012. And the Saturday before we went to Universal! Monday wasn't too bad but then again we were at Hollywood Studios. Again though this was almost three years ago this is old data.

5. The first one that comes to mind is whatever the name of the breakfast at 1900 Park Fare is called. Been a couple of years since I had their breakfast due to my own scheduling but when I last had it had some good stuff. Including some spectacular bread pudding. And its a character meal. Other than that I got nothing.

6. Can't really help here. I went solo to Princess. And Wine and Dine is not spectator friendly. But you can look at last year's event guide which lists some nice suggestions here if you want: http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/rundisney/pdf/wdw-marathon/2014/Marathon14_Prgm_Online.pdf

There down on page 33.

7. Maybe find a good training program/trainer? I mean I know a lot of people use the Galloway plans. But I always found his plans not flexible enough to accommodate my wacky race schedule so that's why I have my race trainer.

For those asking about the 5K discussion, I'd vote for any and all marathon weekend discussion here! I'm running the 5K with my family and the full marathon on my own, but I love to hear about the half and the 10K too!

I'm so glad you have a solid diagnosis, but very sad that it's my personal nemesis, ITBS! I'm ready to rip my left IT Band right out of my leg at this point, lol! The upside is that most folks don't have the ongoing contributing issues I do, so there really is hope for recovery. :thumbsup2

Hi V! There is a bright side, I think. One you already mentioned - solid diagnosis. That foam roller immediately provided relief, but then the pain comes and goes - not as strong, but I know I need to continue with the roller. (I specifically bought a compact foam roller with my WDW Marathon packing list in mind.) And I'm actually getting into the cross training - my new waterproof ipod is awesome for swimming laps!! I will take any and all IT band advice!

So, this is the best blog analysis I've read on the subject.

This is awesome. And totally supports why I was rather...annoyed...the morning of the half. I spent so much time weaving and even though I didn't stop for pictures (I think 1 or 2? I didn't have the patience to wait in the long lines), I still ended up with one of my worse times.

And that brings me to the ONLY problem I had during Dopey - corral placement. Since I did Dopey, I had to submit at least a 10 mile race for verification, but they used my predicted marathon time to seed me.

Submitted time: 2:15 (for a half)
Predicted marathon time: 5:00
Corral: K
According to that analysis (which matches the chatter I heard in the corrals), Corral K had a half time of OVER 3 hours (Corral J was at 3 hours) and a marathon time of 5 hours. My slowest half (and I've done several ha) was a 2:45, so I was clearly in the wrong corral for the half, but the correct corral for the full.

Don't even get me started on the 10k and I'd just rather forget the 5k.

The only way I can think to fix this is to have different bibs for each race, but that's not going to happen.

And yes, I'm going back for Dopey next year. The corral issue was no match for the awesomeness of the weekend.

I can answer a few of these:

#1 - I've only ever stayed on property (Port Orleans, Dolphin, & AoA so far). The on-property buses are reliable & it makes it easier for family members to get where they want to be during the race bc of Disney park transportation. Other people stay off-site & are fine. I think it's all your personal preference. I'm a little insane race mornings, so having the on-property bus is one more thing I don't have to think about that day & my husband can get to diff points in the races w/o having to worry about road closures!

#3 - Probably Fly in to MCO a couple days earlier (maybe Thurs or Fri) like the other poster said to get used to the time change.

#4 - I *think* Marathoners get free entry to MK on Monday, but we usually are boozing it up around the world at EPCOT that day.

#6 - The Half Marathon point is near Animal Kingdom park. Near the end you hit the Hollywood Studios then the Boardwalk/Yacht-BeachClub/Swan-Dolphin Area so that would be an easy walk for them if you stay there

ETA: Never mind. It's late here I over read things like I do sometimes. Looks like they just went for whatever they thought was easiest for them on that.

#2- The resort you choose is all up to you based on financial flexibility/family need. Only thing I would recommend is just staying on resort for the easy transportation to/from expo and Epcot. I might try to book an Epcot area resort this year just to be close by and for peace of mind knowing I do not have to rush in the A.M.

#7- I am going to use the weekend to buy some new running shoes to start training (current sneakers are getting high on milage and new sneaks always can motivate), book flights for the weekend (like others said coming in Thursday/Friday is ideal), and book a hotel. ::yes::

#4 - I *think* Marathoners get free entry to MK on Monday, but we usually are boozing it up around the world at EPCOT

Free park entry was only offered once, in 2011. The full hadn't sold out yet, so in the fall of 2010 Disney announced free entry into any park with a finisher's medal as a way to boost registration. Needless to say, with the popularity of the races these days, it's unlikely we'll ever get that perk again.

Yeah, I had a projected time of 3 hours and I was in J for the Half. And I was sick sick sick, slow slow slow, and was still passing people.

I really feel for you.

But I think they were putting people in places with their opinion of what your race strategy should be in mind. Might be different than your own race strategy!

3. We will be flying in from the UK. Any ideas when to fly in? Ideally I would like to stick to UK time as a 3am start would be 8 am but I also don't want to be exhausted either. I have never raced after a long flight before.

That's the question, isn't it? My first rundisney race was last year's Tower of Terror, and what I SHOULD have done was to come in just the day before the run so I could still be on Pacific time. The same basic thing you're thinking of to stay on home-time so 3am doesn't feel like 3am.

Alas, the long flights aren't a great way to prep for a race, especially yours! Dehydration, not being able to proper nourish yourself, etc. It's a definite conundrum. All you can do is pick what you think will work for you, and then try to make that decision work for you. :)

I'm not into carb-loading, because to properly carb load you have to starve yourself of carbs for days ahead of time. I've studied it but that was a long time ago, and I only have the basics in my head from a post by Coach Charles some months back, but basically what we're doing when we eat a big pasta meal isn't really carb loading. :) Fun, though!

As for breakfast character meals...Tusker House is on my list, especially if you have a later time and they start serving lunch while you're still seated. :)

Well, you should just think of them as your cheering squad! In their defense, if my mom was going to Disney alone, I would feel the need to make sure she had a travelling companion ;)

It's actually ME trying to get them to come along. My son is super excited, but getting my husband on board is like pulling teeth!

Hi All!
My friend registered herself and I for the 10k. I wasn't able to do mine myself due to travel. Because she handled that part, I said I would take over the hotel booking.
When can I book the hotel? We want an Epcot resort, preferably YC. Probably will stay Wed-Sat.

1. So if we were to stay at boardwalk or beach club, we couldn't walk to the 5k? 2. supercalifragilistic breakfast. It was delicious. Characters weren't super evenly distributed, we saw tigger and pooh about 2-3 times each but mary poppins on our way our and the mad hatter missed us completely. I know you can ask your server to send them over but with toddlers when it is time to leave you leave ;)
