Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

Kim should have won gold, Kostner silver and the Russian bronze.

She did not deserve gold with that flubbed landing.

That is why I prefer timed sports.

Agree! Apparently, one judge last night had been previously suspended for trying to fix results, and at least one other judge had been involved. They need better judges and more oversight!:mic:

#1, shame on the IOC first and foremost. They make millions(billions?) on the broadcast rights for the games, largely upon marquee events like figure skating. I know the women's title was the most watched of the disciplines once upon a time, have no idea these days how it shakes out.

The broadcasters forking over this cash have every right to fully expect an event that lives up to the Olympic ideals and oaths the IOC trumpets loudly and if they get a product that diminishes in value because the viewing audience is unwilling to tune in anymore, I think they have a right to use that in future negotiations with the IOC in future at the very least. Things will never change until money talks.

I think the days are coming when the modern Olympic era gets a major retooling. The internet and social media are drastically changing the situation for broadcasting of the games as is. Any marked loss of audience and the time could come quicker than the IOC realizes that they will be begging for nickels from broadcast networks.

While Ashley Wagner may be right, her self-serving, holier-than-thou attitude had no place at the Olympics. If she had won, she wouldn't have been whining. There's probably no sport that judged by people that isn't somehow skewed. But did she think that she would be the one voice to shine light on the injustices and they would rush to change things? And didn't they commentators say the Russian skater threw 7 or 8 triple combos in her program? So maybe she did stumble, but those extra combos at the right time more than made up for the point deduction for the stumble.

I agree with her that the scoring system is flawed, but there is a time & place to address it and when done this way makes her look like a whiney brat.

I don't know who she was referring to in the clean program, but it certainly wasn't her and I hope she realizes that.

On the flip side, foul can't be called in women's only and not across the board. Which is a shame because I do think the Americans won ice dancing fair & square, but it will also be scrutinized forever.

She says she'll be back in 4 years...I'm sure this has made her immensely popular with the judges going forward *eye roll*

Back in four years? So she thinks she can compete and win a medal at 26?

Forget it, Ashley. This is as good as it gets for you, hon

I agree, and now she uses a racial slur in an interview. She was lucky to be allowed to be on the Olympic team to start with. Two big competitions now in a row she chocked. Think she'd keep her mouth shut.

What racial slur?

Ready for round two of USA vs Canada. I just hope to lord Weber doesn't knock out anyone on our team. :rotfl:

Ashley Wagner's complaints were not on behalf of Yuna Kim or Carolina Kostner, though. They were selfish and she used a very offensive term to boot ("I feel gypped.") She was mad because she thought she should be placed ahead of Gracie Gold. Mao Asada and the 15yo Russian because they all fell.

Maybe there should be chances in the scoring system, and I definitely think the judges should not be anonymous. There should be transparency and they should be held accountable.

But this was the scoring system in place and Ashley Wagner should know how it works. It does apparently reward more for trying more difficult programs and falling than skating cleanly with an easier program. I heard the announcers discuss earlier how the skaters, coaches and choreographers specifically design their programs to fit the scoring system.

But regardless, Ashley Wagner has come off like a sore loser and a spoiled brat in these Olympics.

That a judge that fixed results is still judging after a suspension says it all. It's corruption at its worst.

I agree,
Kostner from Italy did it and she is 27.

True, but there may be a big difference in the quality of the person between these two. I think at 22 she has accomplished all she will in her life.

Time will tell. And your second sentence is beyond presumptive. ALL she will in her life? So no possible career for her? No marriage? No children? Just one skate at the 2014 Olympics, as if that were some how the be-all-end-all defining of one's life, and then that's it?

Ashley may have shown her butt after the free-skate but there is a LOT of ugliness being shown right here on this thread and elsewhere. Who knows what she'll do tomorrow...in a year..in 4 years...in the rest of her life.

Exactly. I think there may be a bit of presumption about what she was referring to as well. I think it may have been more in reference to the other Russian skater. That's where I think the scoring really raises eyebrows.

Unfortunately for Ashley, she was on shaky ground to begin with given her being given a spot on the team in the first place, She then compounded her difficulties by being so outspoken immediately on the heels of the event. It may very well be that speaking out really cost her any shot at ever being utilized as on air commentator in the future by any network because she will score negative with the audience from the start because of the negative association with her.
