My hesitations with doing Goofy are mostly a) I don't like waking up early and b) I get to go to WDW so rarely that my park time is precious.

The full is enough work for me. :)

Those are the same things that turn me off from doing Goofy or Dopey again. Three wake up calls before 4 AM in a row was hard, and I was too tired to do the parks too late into the evening. The races were awesome, but it hampered with my normal Disney touring style...:rotfl:

Hi

I have been missing in action from disboards and training. .But getting back on track. Very excited to join this group!! Joining in on page 12 I have some catching up to do:thumbsup2

Planning the whole trip will help motivate me. Hopefully, DH and DS(10) will do 5k and DD(14) and I will do Half. If we can get someone else to come along to be with DS maybe DH can do Half with us. We are planning on doing a four night Dream cruise. Thought we would do the Sunday after. I booked Jan. 6 cruise but have been seeing prediction that it will be following weekend. Do you think it would work to do cruise (Sun-Thurs) before half marathon or should I change cruise dates?

DH and I will hopefully do our first Half this spring. We have been doing 5Ks, I have done one 10K and he has done a few.

We are all packing extra lbs.

Any advice welcome!

My two cents, having done two Disney cruises, is to take the cruise AFTER the races. Two main reasons: 1) you tend to do a lot of walking on the cruises and excursions and you will want to be conserving your legs prior to the races, and 2) the wonderful spa treatments are best received after you run, when you will really appreciate them! :goodvibes I think you can start your cruise on a Sunday afternoon so you have plenty of time to run your races -- even the Marathon -- and then let Disney transport you directly to the ship afterwards.

One other thing: the Half/Full Marathons require participants to be at least 16 years old so I don't think your DD would be able to do it next year. :guilty:

But other than that, I LOVE the idea of marrying a cruise with the Marathon Weekend! I wish I could do that! :thumbsup2

Well, I did the 1/2 this year and was considering the 1/2 next year to better my time (my dh got hurt in the 1/2 and I lost about 15 minutes helping him - would do it again in a heartbeat - he's obviously more worth it!:lovestruc); but dh is saying I should do the full, especially since it's the 20th anniversary and he knows I can do it. This is my question though - I work FT, have a preschooler, and it was tough finding that time to train for the 1/2 - granted I had to share that time with dh who has no interest in running anymore. Any words of wisdom from those in similar situations? I quoted drmomof3 bc I know she's in a similar situation but would love to hear from others. I already get up at 4:30 am to run bc i have to be from work from 6:30-3pm and can't run in afternoons/evenings bc of dh's work and need to take care of son. I would love to hear some thoughts - thanks! I'm planning on doing a VERY vigorous 1/2 in the blue ridge mountains so am training for that now. I took 7 months to train for this past disney 1/2 which was my first, but I came from a place of never running in my life and being overweight. I'm now 70 pounds lighter at my correct weight and felt good after running the 1/2, no aches and pains and even felt like I could run a bit more - but this 1/2 was the most I had ever run before, prior to that it was 10 miles.

I saw go for it! I ran my first HM last week at the Marathon Weekend and now I have four more scheduled for this year, plus a Full in October. And I am going Goofy in 2013. Your journey and mine sound very similar as I had never run before last April either. I do my training runs in the early mornings (Tues, Thurs, and Sat) too. I think we can do this! :thumbsup2

Thanks. I thought it was 14 to do the half and 18 for the full. I guess I need to find out for sure soon.

I'm really leaning towards it - and I wish I could have met you at the last race as I had been following you on the 2012 thread - we'll have to meet up next time! You're right - WE CAN DO THIS!!!!

Congratulations on finishing your 1/2 and the weight loss! I don't have kids so I haven't had that time management challenge, but I'll put in my 2 cents anyway. :) Since you already get up early to run in the mornings before work, you shouldn't have to change your weekday routine. As long as DH and you can work out a schedule on the weekends where he watches DS for a few hours, you can definitely manage. Let's say you plan, on average, to run 2 hours on Saturdays and an hour on Sundays. You'll probably increase to a few 3 hour runs in November and maybe a couple 4 hour runs (depending on your pace) in December. (This is just a rough estimate of time for planning purposes.)

What race are you doing in the Blue Ridge Mountains? I'm near the northern end.

Thanks DVC Maureen! I'm really thinking I can do it! I'm originally from roanoke, va so I am going home to see family and do the 4/21 Blue Ridge 1/2 marathon there - they call the marathon "america's toughest road marathon" - want to join me?

Another vote to go for it! :thumbsup2 I'm sure you can find a training plan that will keep your weekday runs the same...as DVCMaureen said, the weekend ones are where you're going to need to plan it out with your husband.

Edited to add: Congrats on the weight loss!! That is awesome! :cheer2:

I'd also vote to cruise after the race. It's so helpful to be able to walk around a lot AFTER a race (should help keep your muscles loose and your legs feel better) as opposed to doing all that walking before the race.

So after a wonderful (and still to-be-reported) half marathon at WDW this January, I've decided I want to run again. Alright, I'd kind of already decided before then, but it solidified it for me.

Now the issue is this: Full or Goofy? I enjoyed the Half (and I loved the Princess) but I want the 20th anniversary medal. I'm not gonna lie, the bling is deciding this one. But I'm undecided if I should go from having done three halves to a Goofy instead of 'just' a Full? Is there ever really 'just' a Full? :rotfl:

I'd love the challenge and the bling of the Goofy (and I was super jealous of all the Goofyers I saw) but is it too much of a jump even with almost a year to train?

The other dilemma that I put off ding with due a wellspread race list was ingrown toenails. I know I can't be the only one with them and mine really aren't gross or anything (I've seen a lot of nasty photos now and again of other toes), but I found with all the walking at the parks and the running I did, that they definitely ached a fair bit. I found I adjusted my foot movements due to that and there were blistering issues as a consequence.

I now have the time since I won't be doing any races for the next while, to look into solutions for this but I'm not sure what the best course would be. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this? What my pedorthist suggested was something called the Vandenbos procedure but I'd rather avoid surgery if I can help it. And on a day-to-day basis they're weird-looking but pain-free and fine, it's just if I plan to go further distances or continue running halves, I think it's time to fix the issues.

And I should probably stop TMIng the board now... :sad2:

Congrats on running your half! :cheer2: I've been googling around for Goofy training plans (haven't found a free one that I like) and have found tips from previous Goofy runners. A lot of them say that, in their opinion, training for the Goofy isn't all that different from training for the marathon. Having said that, I ran my first half last year and wanted to do the Goofy Challenge in 2012, but decided to "just" :lmao: do the marathon first so I could have one under my belt and see how I recovered. Maybe more experiencde marathoners can weight in.

As for the toenails, I dealt with those when I was in high school a lot and it all had to do with how I was cutting them...from what I remember, DVCMAUREEN is right that you need to cut them square across. Back in high school my doctor wanted me to grow them longer and cut them square, but for running I find that it's better to have them shorter. If you really want to *ahem* get in there and dig out the ingrown parts, maybe try soaking your feet in warm/hot water first, which should make it easier to cut out the parts that are hurting you. If it doesn't, at least you get a nice foot soak out of it! :thumbsup2 And I have heard of someone getting surgery for them, and I don't think their recovery time was too bad. But I definitely understand why you'd want to avoid that option.

My hesitations with doing Goofy are mostly a) I don't like waking up early and b) I get to go to WDW so rarely that my park time is precious.

I like my park days too. That's why I save them until after Goofy is over. Not too crowded on Monday or Tuesday after everyone's gone home. :)

Yeah, that’s something I’d like to explore next year. I had a Supreme Court brief due the Friday following the marathon this year, so I was on a flight at 7pm on Sunday.

Hi Everyone. I've been a long time lurker here on the DIS and have decided to do the full marathon next Jan and I thought I'd be a little more vocal and join this group. I have been gently running since last summer, with no more than 30 minute runs. I'm planning on running the Seattle Rock n'Roll 1/2 marathon in June and then training for the Disney Full next. I've done a single 1/2 marathon prior that I was hopelessly unprepared for. Not doing that again so I'm trying to be über prepared this time. Goal is just to finish both as I am a really slow runner. Time to train is always an issue as I own my own Pilates studio, and am currently in school doing my master's in kinesiology. Hoping that joining a group online will help keep me motivated. Good luck to everyone else, especially those braver than me an attempting the Goofy. PS my husband thinks you should rename the Dopey the Cruella.

Received an email from runDisney today announcing registration for the Disneyland Half. In the right column, showing upcoming dates for races, it had this

20th Walt Disney World®
Marathon Weekend
presented by Cigna
January 10-13, 2013

So I guess there are official dates now.

:goodvibes Thanks for the invite! I have a race 4/15 and a hike from Georgetown to Harpers Ferry on 4/28 so I *probably* shouldn't add America's toughest road marathon in between!

Sounds like you are building a good fitness base with your regular runs. Your plan to do a 1/2 in June and then work up to the full in January should work well. That's very cool that you are studying kinesiology. I would love to hear if you learn anything in school that impacts the way you train.

Upon further reflection (and discussion with my DH), I think I will run "just"* the full in 2013, and if all goes well plan to run Goofy in 2014. I need to give myself this year to get back to where I was 2 years ago when I completed the full in 2010. Also, I haven't been back to Disney since that weekend in 2010, and I want some fun park time too (although my husband wants to run the half so the marathon may take over our weekend anyway!).

*and in what other context is running a full marathon preceded by the word "just"? This proves we're a crazy group!

Made me think of 2006 and my first Goofy. That was also the year my stepdaughter completed her first Disney Marathon. As we were walking into Tomorrowland, a CM sees her Mickey Medal and congratulated her. At which time I simply asked, "What for, she only ran the marathon?" At least I was smart enough to stand beyond the reach of her fist.

I was lucky because 2 years ago my MIL gave us her treadmill (she's morbidly obese, diabetic and has had a knee replacement so her treadmill was sitting idle in her basement) and I keep it in the basement playroom. If I'm home alone with my kids, I can still run. Doing long runs on the treadmill isn't the greatest thing in the world but better than nothing.

It sounds like you're doing everything you need! I don't get up at 4:30 to run (occasionally at 5 for my long runs)! The biggest difference for me for the marathon was that the long runs were longer. I didn't change my mid-week schedule at all. You'll be great!!!

It seems so weird to be talking about 2013 already...My husband finshished his first marathon at the Disney in January. He is already signed up for his second in October. He talked me into my first half in May. He wants to do the Goofy next year with me running the Donald with him.

I am three days in to my first training plan so we will see how it goes. I am planning on walk/running the half with him in May.
