Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Granted, I was catatonic at the end last year and only focused on how much my knees hurt (itbs), but neither Mike or I remember running through Epcot last year and I know we didn't the first year. So, I could be wrong, but I believe that is new.:goodvibes That's really nice cause the last 1/4 mile or so of that course stunk and was dark and unending!

The course map from last year looks like no finish through Epcot.

The course did not run through Future World last year. It ran backstage behind the UK, Canada, Imagination, Land and Seas pavilions.

This year's finish appears to be more in line with where the marathon weekend races and princess half finish. Not quite the same place, but in more of an open area than the last two years.

I'm SO excited that the course is going through Epcot this year. I confirm what others are saying. Last year's course ran behind future world and ended outside Epcot. So if you were at the after party inside Epcot, you would have to wait until after your runner was finished before seeing them. This year it looks like your spectators could actually see you run towards the end of the race from inside epcot!

Anyone else having issues training in this awful heat? I have a treadmill but I prefer running outside (but not in the dark). It's getting harder to find a time when it's not above 90 degrees! (I can't go in the early mornings because I'm home alone with my son before work).

Oof I can't even imagine that right now! We have had balmy weather... none of our days have gone over 80 in almost three weeks but it is so THICK here! I don't know if our humidity has been up or what but even my 4 miler inside yesterday in 75 degrees made me sweat like the dickens (we have no air conditioning).

Yes, I'm having the same issue. I'm not motivated to go run in the gym so I haven't really run since Father's Day. I did the Father's Day 5K along the river by Heinz Field and PNC Park.

Where do you run?

My husband and I ran our first 10k race today.
So excited to run our first half at Disney.
When we registered we didn't have any "proof of time" to submit. But now we can go ahead and submit our times. exciting stuff!!

Does anyone know how many people go in each wave? and how soon the next wave goes?

Yeah. This heat is killing me, and I really want to run but I don't feel particularly safe doing it in the dark and my slower pace prevents doing longer runs before work. Treadmills are so frustrating compared to running outside--you can't just sprint and slow down without fumbling with buttons, you don't run towards anything...

On the plus side I get more runs in with the treadmill AND I get to watch Disney movies while I do it! We put a little shelf above in front of the treadmill, just large enough for me to put my 13" laptop. :goodvibes

Congrats on the 10K! I submitted my time and they respond with your "New" estimated time.....I think Corrals come later, after they see how many/how fast the entries are....

Hi everyone - I'll be running the 1/2 marathon in November in celebration of my 30th birthday and bringing my husband and our two kids (3 and 6) to WDW for the very first time. I am trying to figure out how to best maximize our trip and time in the parks with wanting to run my best race.

We have ADRs for breakfast at Chef Mickey's on Saturday morning, then we need to head to the expo. I was hoping to spend a few hours in Animal Kingdom (we are booked at AKL), catch the parade at 3:45, then head back to the hotel so I can get ready for the race and head to the buses around 7pm. I know that will make a very long day but my kids absolutely love parades.

Is this a crazy idea? There will be no time for a nap and probably involve more walking than I would like. Will I be worn out by the time 10pm rolls around?

It sounds like a busy day, but only you can say how much energy you will have. There are ways to make it work. Take transportation as much as possible. No park commandoeing (sp?). Take breaks and just sit. Make sure you are hydrating throughout the day.

Our day will probably be:
DHS for open. Late breakfast at Kouzzina (around 10:45). Hang out at DHS or Epcot until early afternoon, and then find a place to park it and watch college football in the afternoon. I am not a big napper. Did not take a nap before the first or second W&D and I did fine. I think the big thing is to take it easy on your legs. No crisscrossing back and forth across AK. Keep it low key and I think it's doable.:goodvibes

And fwiw, there were people plopped before the race getting in little naps at the staging area. I couldn't do that, but Mike probably could. He can sleep anywhere.;)

I'm down for this race. I will literally be running into my 41st birthday. :) Also, I'm going to try and go perfectly W&D for as long as they have it - or until my legs fall off. :lmao:

Oh, as far as resorts, I stayed at the Dolphin last year and it worked out quite well for me: gov't rate AND close enough to walk to BW to get the busses for start. After the race, we just walked back to our resort, not having to fight for busses and it was a good 'stretch' for after the run. :)
Can I just say Happy Birthday!!! I will be running on my actual birthday! That was part of the reason for use running this race. What are the odds of this happening again.

They have cast members who move the course ever so slightly to the left and right with a rope allowing spectators to pass. I didn't notice it while running, but when we walked back through Epcot after the princess I saw it.
I was one of the slow runners for Princess and it was kind of frustrating when park partrons would get in the way of the runners. I understand that they are there to enjoy the park but a group crossing in front of a runner sure can be dangerous. Saw a few close calls.

That's cool you will be running on your birthday! I will not be running on my birthday but I registered for the race on my birthday this past month, as a little "present" to myself. That and I bought a garmin watch. :thumbsup2

LWQuestie and mighty duck-
I had to run my first long run of the year inside on my treadmill last night because it was around 100 still at 7pm. I got through it with lots of music but I think I need to hook up the tv for the runs i might end up doing indoors when the kids take back over the high school track. I try to run a few runs on our local trail each month but mostly i do treadmill and track because i have asthma and knees that are still recovering from an injury. I definitely run faster outside, and do better with walk breaks and adjusting my pace.

Aquadame- The disney movies are a great idea! Especially the ones with music! It's kinda like training where you will be running. Although I will say it was slightly odd hearing regular pop music piped through Epcot during the race and party last year! I think they need to mix in a little Disney music- especially hercules! (and my secret music magic: newsies).

We have started to make it a tradition in our family. DH, DFIL, DMIL, and myself all ran Hospital Hill 1/2 marathon for my DH birthday. MY DFIL will run his first full marathon on his 60th birthday. And I will be running 26.2 miles when I am 26.2 years old (Disney Marathon). We can't do a 1/2 marathon or marathon for my DMIL. Running that far in Kansas in July is not healthy.

It's been over 105 the past two weeks. Sucks to get training in.

it's on my birthday too! (nov 10)!
ooh! you're from ks too!

Dara are you going to wear Mickey ears or a birthday crown? I can't decide. I'm having a bday cake make that's beauty and the beast crossed wither the wine and dine logos.

ooh, I don't know! I'm not sure I can run with something on my head, you know? I was going to maybe get something on a shirt, but I haven't decided yet.

I ran princess 1/2 Marathon with my wedding crown on my head an didn't notice. I was wondering if you made ADR for you birthday supper yet? Also, if you would a piece of birthday cake.

i made an adr for cape may cafe for breakfast the morning after the 1/2. I don't think I'll want to eat a big dinner before running. sure I'd like a piece of cake! :)

For the last couple of years I've had a Disney half marathon on my bucket list. I really want to try this race but I'm also really nervous about it. I've started the Galloway training a week early and right now I'm pretty comfortable with a fifteen minute mile pace for about three miles. It's an expensive trip to make if I'm not able to finish. I would need to fly from Detroit and would be going solo as my wife would need to stay with the kids. I haven't signed up yet because I'm still on the fence about spending the money.

My big question is do a lot of people get swept?
