Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

With less than a month to go, no waivers and no Magical Express tickets.....please come soon! I do not know if I can wait much longer....anyone else feel the same way? Maybe we need some pixie dust from Tink....pixiedust:

I do!! I am so anxious!! Not really in a bad way...just in the way that will finally make it all seem real.

ETA: I am so not looking forward to this weekend's long run. I have been under the weather the last couple of days and I am so lethargic. My body has definitely been fighting off a cold or something. The idea of laying around is so appealing. But I skipped my long run last weekend because my knee was really hurting...I can't afford to skip anything else.

Same here... you can tell it is fall, everyone is dropping like flies! :crazy2: I'm worried the 12 in the rain is going to give me a full on cold, but like you I just can't miss it. if I have to miss one, the last one two weeks from now is easier to justify based on many other things I need to work around.

Does anyone know if iFitness sells their running belts at the expo, and if they are at a discount? I know they are one of the sponsors so I would assume they'd have a booth...but I would like to know ahead of time about what they have. I'd like to get myself a belt while there if they offer a discount.

It is supposed to rain here tomorrow, but be sunny on Sunday, which is when I am doing my run. I almost wish I was doing my run tomorrow because the high on Sunday will be in the 80s and I can't go until the afternoon/evening when it will be at that high. Unfortunately my DH works all day tomorrow, so I will need to stay inside with my two toddlers.

For all those experiencing black and blue toenails and losing toe nails...

Have you tried double lined running socks? They work for me to avoid the toe nail problem. The socks are super thin, but sewn together, such that when you run, the outside layer sits on the shoe, the inside layer sits on your foot/toes and the rubbing occurs between the two layers of socks. If you don't want to replace your whole running sock collection, just get a few pair and use them just on long runs. Use your single lined socks on your mid-week short runs.

I grabbed the wrong type of sock out of my drawer when I packed for the Princess Half in February (single, regular pair), but ran the race in them anyhow. Sure enough, I got a huge blood blister under my big toe during the race. I still have about 1/4" to show for it. When I got back, I just replaced all my old single lined socks with doubles and will never deal with that issue again. I ran 10 miles last weekend and 10 miles yesterday - and no problems with toe nails.

You can only go so big with your shoe size. Try swapping out the socks!

Tell me more! What brand sells these? I would love to fix this issue without having to change shoes. Thanks for the suggestion!

iFitness will be at the expo. At previous Disney races there has been a 15% off card in your bag you get at the expo.

Awesome, I hope that is still the case with the discount card! If anything, I will at least save on the shipping charges.

Swapping socks worked for me! I switched to the toe socks by ininji. So more rubbing between toes and no more blisters!

I was getting blood blisters on the pad of my 2nd toes (longer than my big toe). I think I must grip with my toes. I was covering them with blister bandaids but they would often rub off.

A friend told me about toe caps. They come in a package of 4 and they are reusable silicone type covers for your toes. I haven't had a problem since I started using them in January. I think the package was around $12-$14 but considering the cost of blister bandaids that were one use only I think it's been worth it. I rinse with soap and warm water and air dry. They are starting to get a little tacky so I will probably replace them in a month or so but I swear by them. I haven't tried them on my big toes because thankfully they haven't bothered me. :-)

Where did you get the toe caps? The double layer socks did help a little, but my last two toes still suffer on longer runs.

We have a local running store called FitRight NW in Portland and Vancouver that carries them.

They are called Pro Tec Toe Caps. I looked online and they are on Amazon and at REI. If they are too long for your smaller toes, the instructions say you can cut them down. I use them on my 2nd toe and a couple of times on my 4th toe without a problem. Good luck!

I recently bought some from Running Warehouse or Road Runner Sports (I buy stuff from both online sites, so I'm not sure where I exactly got them). Brand is WrightSock. Cool Mesh II. They work great!

Do an online search at these websites for "double layer" in the socks section. Good luck!

does anyone think there's any chance test track will have a preview for us at the after party??

Thanks for all the toe advice guys. You're the best! I will definitely look into one of these options. It's only my second toes that give me issues but it's so annoying!

I finally ran a second run this week. Not great that I've only run twice this week at this point in training but I'm psyched because I have been sick and also having headache problems and neither bothered me that much (or at all) tonight. I'm starting to believe maybe I can salvage my training and this race after all. I only did 3.5 miles but it was enough for me to feel I haven't lost momentum or strength from my nearly week off.

Good luck to everyone with their training this weekend. Especially you brave souls doing those long 12 milers!

And me, the double layer socks are all I need. :thumbsup2 My husband much prefers the toe socks - he always gets blisters walking around and such and I am not as prone to them it seems, so to each their own!

In my multi-year suffering of migraines there is one thing I have learned VERY well, and that is how many seemingly unrelated things can cause head pain! If you have a cold or are having trouble getting your mileage up due to pain elsewhere that can absolutely be at the root cause of your headaches. I could go on and on, but I will spare everyone..! Hopefully once the rest is in line you will start to feel better!

Thank you for the encouragement too! We are 100% go for running our 12.5 tomorrow morning and have even just now returned from carb loading at the spaghetti factory (its uh... necessary. Teehee! <3)

My biggest feet issues are that my toes are naturally too close together, so I would get the nail of one toe cutting into another toe, despite how low they were cut and filed. The toe socks have cured that problem for me. I'll never run in anything else!

For those who love the toe socks, pink ones are 1/2 off for the month of october on injinji's website! God knows I can't afford them full price...

12 Done! Whooo-hooo. Achilles o.k. so far. Lots of epsom salt baths this weekend have helped. Worked on correct form in that foot too. Advil at beginning of run. Stinger chews worked great-chased with water. 60's/low 70's - weather was breezy, perfect, and overcast, so the sun wasn't beating down on us. We passed a couple of houses this morning and smelled pancakes, sausage, and syrup! Ha! It smelled SO good! First time for that. :)

4 more weeks! I'm ready to do this thing! I think my body's ready! First time doing 12. So happy and I can't believe it. (I think I'm still on my runner's high.) :)

Congrats - isn't it amazing how things get better with little changes! Only two more long runs for me, a shorter one then the race week - starting to get excited.

Way to go!! That is SO awesome...and that runner's high is amazing!! :cool1:

I still have to get out there and will in a little bit. My DH had to be at work at 5am and is now home napping...I've been at home with my toddlers. It is currently 77 and the sun is SHINING. Great on any other day where I don't have to do a 12 mile run. Plus I have been under the weather and super tired as a result. I hope I can pull through it. Honestly, I have no doubts I can actually finish the race. I DO have doubts about how much I can do today under the circumstances.
