Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Just finished reading all 26 pages of this thread!

My friend DD is signed up to run the half and I am going to go for the afterparty, er, I mean for support of course!

I think we'll probably book at the Swan/Dolphin and it sounds like she can bus it from the BW to the race start?

I'm driving so for the packet pickup, I can drive her there right?

Also had a question about the afterparty tickets. I haven't purchased mine yet. I see that the price increases in Oct, but does anyone know if these tickets sell out (like how the race does)?

A little about us, we are from Sarasota FL (west coast of the state, about 2 1/2 hours from the World) and I'm a disneyholic w/ an annual pass to prove it. DD hasn't been to Disney since she was a kid (tragic!)
This just seems like the perfect excuse for a girls weekend:goodvibes.

Welcome!!!

You should have no problem walking over to the BoardWalk and catching a bus from there to the race.

Yes, you can drive to the expo. I find it easier to drive to the expo than the runDisney transportation.

Whether the tickets sell out or not is a matter of how you do math. I am fairly certain that the party will officially sell out. Whether that is due to reaching the capacity of hard tickets or because Disney wants the PR of having a 'sold out' party, is up in the air.

And my opinion is that any day that ends in "Y" is an excuse to go to WDW.

I have a training question and I'm just about starting to freak out and get sad, so I hope someone will have some advice or inspiration.

I was doing SO well with my running and training this year. I'm a beginning/intermediate runner, started running more seriously last summer during a rehab for a leg/knee injury. I wasn't ready in time to run with my sister in the wine & dine last year, and told myself that if I was able to, I was going to run the W&D in 2012. My injury brought new meaning to the term "I run because I can" because for a while, I wasn't sure I'd be able to walk correctly or run again.

Anyway, my injury is all better, I was able to run pain-free. Training was going so well.

Until two weeks ago when shin splints kicked in in a bad way. I'm trying to resolve that issue (see my other post in the general WISH board if you're curious). But what's really bugging me is what to do about training. I'm starting to panic that I'm not going to be able to do this. :(

I was up to 7 mile long runs in June. I run 3x a week (and try to add a 4th cross training day in). For the last two weeks, because of the shin splints, I backed off to 2 runs a week, and cut the percentage of running down by about 1/2 - 3/4, adding in more walk breaks. (I mostly run, not run/walk, on my shorter runs). So now I'm down to about 2.5-3 miles per run, and I haven't done more than 3.25 miles per run in 2.5 weeks....

I wasn't really following the Galloway plan. I was alternating adding to my LR every other week and was set up perfectly to be ready for the half on Nov 10 (even with a taper, and with a lower mileage week in August due to vacation). Now I feel like I'm going to be behind even if I follow Galloway's beginning plan.

Coach (or anyone else!), any advise on how to still be ready for the half in time? :confused3

Do you have access to a pool with a deep end? I was in physical therapy from the end of October until the beginning of January and ran the Princess only a few minutes slower than the year before (and the year before was my best 1/2 time ever.) So I didn't run for about 10 weeks.

I rode the bike a couple times a week and I 'ran' in the pool a couple of times a week. The pool running will keep your cardio up with no impact on your legs which should help those shin splints to heal. When I started running again, I had no cardio issues. I was slower only because my legs fatigued a little faster.

What I found works best is to wear a float belt in the deep end and basically run back and forth. At first I could only do 30 minutes--and I had just finished the w&d--but running in the pool is tiring! I eventually got up to over an hour.

Make sure you aren't letting your legs go wide--or you will have some hip/itband issues. Really watch your form--you want it to be like you are actually running. Try not to use your arms too much. Make your legs work. At the end I added in pool "weights" to make it more challenging.

When you start stretching your calves for those shin splints, make sure you are holding those stretches. The pt told me a stretch that is less than 15 sec is useless...she always wanted me to count to 30. I usually then repeated each stretch 4 times.

Good luck. Injuries stink! But coming out the other side of one makes you feel so strong! You will be so proud of yourself for sticking it out.:goodvibes

We had been planning on staying at POP but see the Allstars are the Hosts and have direct bus service to WWOS during the expo?

Do I need to switch resorts or can I get to WWOS on Friday with ease and more importantly on Saturday in time for her race?

Your best bet would probably be a taxi. I'm not sure how frequently Disney transportation buses go from Pop to WWoS.

RunDisney charters tour buses for race related transportation to help minimize confusing non race guests and to reduce any strain put on capacity loads.

It sounds like the best plan then would be to move the trip from POP to one of the Allstars. The facilities seem similiar and it would be easier for DD to getto her 1 mile race on Saturday plus to enjoy the expo for a while on Friday

wow I can beleve the race is comming soon. I thought I had posted here earlier but I guess not.
I am in and my DW will be running her fisrt 1/2 with me and my mother. My grandparents are joining us for a great week at disney.
We have a 2br at SSR, can wait

runDisney has the race listed as 96% ful.....

Ugh! I'm in the running (pun intended, I guess!) to win an entry into the W&D Half...which would be my first. Training hard for it, but we just don't have the cash for this right now. I'm hoping either the race doesn't sell out before August 11, when the contest winner is announced, or that I just win the entry...looks like its gonna be a tight window!

I was just on the runDisney sight and notice two different finish times for the Finish Line Party. If you click on the Finish Line Party link it says 4am but if you look at the schedule it says 3am. Anyone know which one is correct. :confused3

It has typically been 3 am in the past, although 4 am would be nice!

Love the photo of the medal, it is a real beauty! We have just 15 weeks until the race, and I am in full training mode getting excited about another trip to WDW!

tink did it in a day! popcorn::

That was shocking. I get a post stating they were XX% full and the next day Tink is full. It is getting harder and harder to put off registration. But know that I have run RunDisney events and see how the corrals work I will be a"first In" all the time so I can get a closer corral and have some more cushion to play at photo stops.

You should try living in NYC. Our races sell out in a matter of hours.

We are 98% full!! I'm thinking we will sell out Friday!

It was at 97% at 10am. It may not even make it until Friday. Those last two percent seem to go quick.

That was absurd. But maybe it means that runDisney will offer more west coast races, if the demand stays high.

I wonder if Cars Land/Buena Vista Street has that much draw, or the reviews from last year's race?

I signed up a couple of weeks ago with my husband's cousin, Kate. I am excited to be doing another RunDisney event! :goodvibes.

We are booked at CBR and I am looking forward to returning to that great resort. I started the Galloway WnD schedule on Sunday.

I am enjoying all the great info and commeraderie here!

Anyone know if you only get discounted resort tickets at host hotels or any Disney resort through RunDisney?

It is my understanding that discounted park tickets are available whether you stay at a host resort, non-host resort or even off property. I believe the 'discounted' room rates are only valid at host resorts.
