Official 2012 Princess Half Marathon Thread!

Hello Fellow Princesses,

I use the Bingham training and usually do an 8 minute run 2 minute walk interval (I found 2 minutes gives me time for rehydrating and having a gel without getting off interval- at least usually). Since this years Princess I'm having a touch of knee problems (I had alot of off time in Jan and Feb which I figure has contributed to the smaller muscles in my legs not supporting my knees as they should.) so am now only doing 2-3 miles 3 times a week with an interval (indoors on an 11 lap per mile track) of 5 laps run 1 walk 3 laps run 2 walk. I'm joining a running class that starts tonight so we'll see how it goes.

I bought some "wicking" headbands at the expo (sorry can't remember the company right now) they were $5 apiece at the Expo and Princess related (crowns and such on them) which I love since I usually have to carry something to wipe the sweat from my face so it doesn't get in my eyes.

Did this years Princess with DD#2 hopefully both she and DD#3 will join me next year.

Fellow Princesses . . . in case you are interested, here is a Race Report from my latest Half - The National Half Marathon in Washington DC.

Yes indeed great race and thanks for sharing. Awesome job on PR! :thumbsup2 It does make one wonder what you are capable of when you do better than you ever expected. With all that was going on it sounds like you needed the run to lose yourself for just a bit.

Again great job.

I do intervals on all of my runs - I do two 3 miles and 1 long run per week. I usually up the intervals on short runs to 2:1 or 3:1 as I can, and stick to whatever interval goes with my current pace for the long runs.

I did my 3.1 miles this morning on the treadmill and started with a 1/1 ratio, that was too much button pushing, so I switched to a 2/1. I did increase my speed for the run, and walked at my previous run speed. The intervals are interesting on the treadmill - not sure I liked them - I'm sure it will be better outside. I'm hoping to do my run on Thursday outside.

I know I'm a couple days late, but I'm subbing to hear all about the 2012PH-M! I just set a goal to run the half next year and I'm gonna need all the help I can get! Looks like I have quite a bit of reading to do to catch up, so I'll get to it!!

Welcome!

Hey Ga Girls have you received your notice to sign up for Peachtree. I got early entry because of an Emory Affiilation. I just wanted to know who from this thread will be doing the Peachtree 10k. It would be great to see some of my Disfriends out and about. Not sure I will be able to use this race for corral time as this race is HOT HOT HOT and I'm still struggling in the snail pace of 14 minutes. Anyway it would be nice to say hey to some fellow ATL diser's.

I have been lurking and reading and I am so intrigued by running this race and accomplishing something really big but I have never been a runner and a little apprehensive if I can take it up at 50. Starting in January (cliche) I have started trying to get my health back - I have lost 25 pounds with between 25-40 to go and excercising - aerobic dancing - not running.

Any advice or comments?

Great report - we attended the expo on Friday - we had alot of fun - my first experience. Can you tell me what hotel you stayed at?

Tis time we staYed at the Westin at city center. Wasn't my favorite but the service was excellent. They rectified any problems we had. I wound up there via name your own price on price line. I always get great deals in dc with that!

Hmmm when is this race? I'm in Nashville and could easily do this race... well driving-wise maybe not running-wise. :rolleyes1

Well first Welcome! :wave2:
As for advice others can probably help you more than me. I'm new to this whole idea (I did run in high school but not really long distances). But I will say that I think you can do it. You have almost a year to prepare yourself and many ladies here have started from the couch so to speak... running program C25K I believe is what some use on these boards to get them started. Besides who ever said you had to run the whole thing. If you are concerned you should ALWAYS talk to your doctor first, your doctor would know better about your physical condition. But have heart and spirit and go for your dreams. I believe most people have said if you can walk a 16 minute mile you can finish this race.

ahhh never-mind this is that big one with the lottery and such. :sad1: So no chance for me, I believe

When I first started jogging, (at 46 yrs. old) a mile was very hard. I had a full test done on my heart at the Cardiologists. They found nothing wrong with my heart, but told me to follow a plan. I bought some expensive running shoes. I picked Hal Higdon's training plan, it's free online for training for the half. There is also Galloway.

I also got full bloodwork and got an inhaler for asthma. I got the A-ok from the doc. I ate veggies first, then fruit and protein everyday.

I worked out for the whole year and was confident by the time the princess marathon came. I am a slow runner, but at least I didn't get hurt. :) You kinda want to go slow to see everything anyway.

It was fun and exciting! I will never forget it and will always treasure that day. Everyone at Disney was so nice.

I just received my framed commemorative of the Princess. And I only ordered it late last week. Haven't received the photo yet.

Good luck!!

Great report! Love the photos of the kiddies...and congrats on your PR! Honestly, when I first started all I wanted to do was break 3 hours...I never in a million years would think only 2 and a half years later I would be chasing 2 hours.

Can I shameless post mine too? I literally just got my blog up and running (no pun intended)...so you guys are my first test audience :lmao:

SORE SPOT!!!!:lmao: I swear every single person I know has gotten in...everyone, that is, except me! My hubs read that 60,000 got in; 2,000 apps were rejected. I know someone had to be in that 2,000, but it's really annoying! Oh, well. Feel certain that someone will be willing to transfer a number. Otherwise, I can take it as a sign from God to rest up, sleep in, and have an iced tea in your honor!!!:hippie:

Welcome! My advice echoes the others - get a physical first. The fact that you've lost so much weight already shows that you've got some great discipline! I would definitely seek out a couple of different training plans and go with the one that looks right for you. Lots of people on this board use Jeff Galloway's run / walk intervals. I used Hal Higdon's beginner runner plan, and it was a walk / run thing as well. Check out runnersworld.com and they have a whole section for beginner's with lots of great topics and advice. I didn't start training for this year's princess until last August. I was turning 40 and had never run before, at all. Did it injury free and was so proud at the accomplishment.

One thing that a lot of other ladies on last year's board mentioned about weight loss: their numbers on the scale kind of stalled, but they noticed their clothes sizes were definitely going down. I think runners can't be so focused on pounds lost; the focus seems more to be on inches and sizes.

This board is a GREAT resource for advice, but most of all encouragement. Post your runs, your progress, your setbacks - most everyone is right there with ya! :thumbsup2

THanks for sharing! Fun looking race. Is this part of the course of the marine corps marathon...I heard that was a tough course.

GREAT job!

I'm not sure . . . the National boasts they are the only half all within DC limits. I would guess some is similar. DC seems to be a bit hilly in general. Again, nothing major . . . just a LOT of graduals! Amy might know . . . she just ran the National and is planning on doing the MCM.

I am the same way! January of 2010 had me at a little over 3:00 (had some other issues, too.) Maybe I can dream to break 2:00 in a couple more!

All blogs and race reports are welcome - inspiring!
