:blush:I should have mentioned that he also works with a woman that runs marathons and trains people for them. She's the one who helps people at the store. She knows her stuff and she's worked with running stores before (she just likes REI better and it is a great company to work for). She's been a real asset for them --- not something all the REI stores have and she will tell you if they don't have the shoe that would be best for you. So she can help. Also since my husband is an employee we can get shoes from anywhere as long as REI sells them.

:flower3: But I do thank-you for your advice. :thanks:

Definitely an asset to that store.

Thanks to all for the encouragement, I really appreciate it!! I need one of those foam rollers as well. Saw 'em at my running store, but thought "do I REALLY need one of those??" Funny, because I was thinking about getting one in December, but then I had to quit running.

Guess I've got some time to buy it, though; I won't be jogging or running for a while. Frustrating, but I'd love love love to make a run through Disney AND get that little 13.1 magnet for my car. :)

Also, compression socks - yay or nay? I've never used them, but the past year my calves got so much sorer than the year before. My brother is a marathoner, but he and I have such different body types I never really asked him any questions; he trained, while I just had fun.

I use my polar watch with my footpod to track my runs and upload them to dailymile. I thought it might me nice to set up a Princess Half Marathon challange where we could share our workouts if anyone is interested.

I'm on DailyMile! Kathryn J and same city/state as in my DIS profile.

With all this shoe talk, I thought I would throw in my two cents. I'm a VERY new runner...ran my first 5K in January and ran a second in February. I was running in some adidas but decided since they were so old, I decided to find something new. This week I bought a pair of ryka tennis shoes. They are the MOST comfortable shoes I've ever worn. They say they are specifically designed for women runners. So far, I'm loving them. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Odd ball question because I'm like that :upsidedow

What colors on the running bib coordinate with which Princess? (i.e. Belle is yellow, Cinderella is baby blue ect.)

Snow White was a light purple, Cindy was Blue, Aurora was Pink, Belle was Yellow. I THINK Ariel was a darker green and Tiana was a lighter one. I would look at the video of the costumes to get an idea....

I wondered the same thing last year :lmao:

Kat, I requested you as a friend.

I am Julie F from Sandy springs, GA

Anyone else I need all the motivation I can get?

Added!

6 miles this morning... I am ramping up my mileage as a friend has convinced me to do the Marine Corps Historic Half on 5/15. I am also volunteering at a water stop tomorrow, for a local marathon.

Be careful of the Princess... it gets you addicted! I was persuaded to do it in 2010 and wound up jioining a Galloway training group, and the half in May will be number 5!

I am still slow, but finishing is all that matters!!

I am no help on the compression socks, I asked my Physical Therapist about them and she said for me it was more important to get my stretching in...now I am coming off an injury and this was prior to this year's half when I was about 2 weeks out and looking for ANYTHING to help me. :-) From what I have seen, no research proving they help, but people do swear by them.

You can so do it! I am on a running break to recover from my PF. I think about another 3 weeks to a month. Still doing eliptical and some gym biking. I am thinking of getting some walking sticks also because its just getting so beautiful down here I want to go outside.... My MomInLaw used them and swore by them as far as getting a great workout.

I trained last year alone and loved it. On the race I was alone, but people were very friendly and supportive. It was so much fun!

I have them and really like them. I have been training in them and I notice that my shins are much happier, but that could be using different shoes, too.

Who knows if it's all in my head, though?

Thanks for the advice! I went and got a foam roller and yowsa do my legs scream when I do it! Must be getting at something that needs it then. So glad you are here to "pipe in"!

Thanks again
Michele

dumb question - what is a foam roller and where would I find it at Walmart? :confused3

Eeeeep!!!! My 5k is tomorrow! I'm excited, but my running partners are not feeling great, so our goal is JUST to finish!

We went to the expo and it was really neat! I loved all the swag and free stuff and we heard about lots of smaller races that are not very well advertised online, so that was fun! There were also two booths with tons of 75-80% tech shirts, so we totally scored there!

Melissa if you look at the upper right hand side of your daily mile page you'll see how you're listed. I'm Kelly C from Dahlonega, GA.

I've set up a Disney Princess 1/2 Marathon Challenge on dailymile if any of you are interested.

Tomorrow's my "long" run day... 6.5-7 miles. :cheer2:

Hi everyone!
I would LOVE to do this! I have started C25K numerous times, and this last time only made it to week 6 before "life" got in the way and I wasn't consistent anymore.

My plan is to start again on Monday. I think I will do Week 1 around the track at the gym, and then do Week 1 again outside.

Anyone have any tips for beginning runners? Any sites/programs you recommend?

I've read this whole thread, and from what I gather, I need new sneakers, socks, a watch, what else??!!

I'm hoping to have a friend or my dh join me for this. We'll see who I can round up!

Find a 5k near you that coincides with the end of your c25k and register for it. Even if it's a little earlier than when you'll be finished. You'll be a lot more likely to finish c25k if you've paid money and registered for a race.

Try to enlist a friend to do c25k with you. There will be days that you have no desire to get out there, but if you know a friend is waiting for you, you'll put your shoes on just for them. Has any of your friend expressed an interest? Maybe find someone that's willing to commit to the Princess next year. That's how I got started. My friend eventually stopped running, but I wouldn't have had the guts to keep going if it hadn't been for her and our original commitment to run the Princess.

Get a subscription to Runner's World. Lots of great articles for beginners. I would imagine that over the years it all feels recycled to experienced runners, but for a newbie I've enjoyed every issue that arrives. It's not expensive either. Check their site and I think you can get it for $12 or $15 per year.

Shoes - take the time to visit a running store. One that has a good return policy. Wear them only for running.

Clothes - do you live near an outlet shopping center? I buy my Under Armor shirts at an outlet in Orlando. They're half the price that I would pay locally at Sports Authority or Dick's.

Sorry I do not do walmart so I am no help with where there. I know Target has them as well as most sport stores.

This is a link that shows what they are...

Here is a link for runner's use of a roller.

Look for a roller with a harder surface than just foam. For home use it is not as critical as club, but I have worn one out. I actually use this product instead of the foam roller...

I use the system as I think the convex rollers and ball dig deeper into the tissure. Plus, it is very portable so I can carry a roller with me as I travel.

Hello all--
Elyn M from Atlanta--it's been some 25 years since I've run anything and after seeing the excitement on a friend's blog from last year I've set a goal for myself of celebrating my 50th birthday by run/walking the Princess 2012. I have arthritis in one foot so it's definitely a see what happens kind of thing. I started C25K last week and, with the exception of shoes, have promised myself (and DH) that I will not buy any new "toys" until I actually finish 9 weeks.

Since my schedule is a little awkward I can't join a running group in Atlanta to train but am trying it on my own. I've always found the Dis to be a great community when planning our trips, when buying in to DVC, etc. so I'm excited that this thread has started.

I am on DailyMile (Elyn M from Atlanta) and I *think* I sent out some friend requests but can't be sure....please come find me. I'm looking forward to an online community to prepare.

I ditto the Runner's World subscription.

I joined a local running club, one that is tailored to who I am. It's sponsored by Jeff Galloway and is a run/walk group that has all paces (7min mile to 15min miles) and does a long run together every Saturday morning.

Your area may have another group that is more for you. Check with your local running stores, or just google your general area + running and you may find one. Be sure that the group is okay with your pace, though, whatever it is, or you can find yourself either held back and frustrated, or discouraged that you can't keep up.

Clothes - I find Target or Walmart has decent non-cotten wicking wear, or you can try a store like TJ Maxx, Kohl's, Marshalls, or Ross. Biggest advice I can give is NO COTTON, especially in the summer months. Look for polyester blends that say moisture wicking. If you are larger like me, you may want to check out the men's section.

Socks - don't neglect socks. Dri-wick is also important here. Dual layer is best. I would try out what works for you, though. I *have* to go with the cushioning socks or I get blisters, but some don't like them. TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshals are also excellent sources here because you can try out different brands and kinds without breaking the bank.

Sports bra - also important. Local running store, Dick's, or if you have a Champion store/outlet nearby are the best bets for that. I am, umm, on the larger side, so I need the super-compression kind with underwire. Champion and Moving Comfort both have good ones for almost any type, though.

Also, once you get past 8 miles and/or over 1-1.5 hours out on long runs, it's time to start thinking about water belts or handheld water, and fuel. Some like Gu, or Sports Beans, or Chomps for fuel, others do fine with regular jelly beans, and I have even seen some go for string cheese.

We are here to help!! Any questions, just ask. Best thing to do is take all of the advice and opinions and find what works best for you. :goodvibes
