Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

Hello Princesses in Training! :) I hope everyone's training is going well. Unfortunately I am not feeling well today, and will miss atleast 1 run. I am going to try for my 11 on Thursday, but hoping not to panic about it if it doesn't happen since I have gotten 10 miles in twice so far. I can not believe I only have 2 more really long runs scheduled before the princess. It is so close! It is so hard to keep motivated in the winter.

I will say that I think the princess is making winter go really fast. I need about two more weeks of training so I wish February was just a little longer - never thought I would say those words.
I will be going 12.5 miles this weekend - I am going to focus on keeping my walking fast and running as an extra.
I have never been on these board except in this site but everyone is so postive - I channel your spirts as I run.
Martha

Okay so since my 12 miler on Jan. 1, my calves have been getting increasingly tight. I got a charlie horse in the middle of my Zumba class last night. Wondering if I need to take it easier....stretch more (I added yoga once a week to help with that), or get a sports massage. Please say sports massage so that I have an excuse ;-) But seriously, what do you all do keep your calves working.

Who is doing a 12 miler this weekend? That's on my schedule. Hope the weather cooperates.

I am not a professional, but here is what I have done and do if calves are getting tight. 1. I stretch right after running. One stretch is hanging my heals off a step and just letting the calves stretch for a long while...more than a min. You can look online for calf stretches, it is best to do them while you are still warm. 2. I make sure I am getting enough potassium. I will do some sports drink a couple hours before I run and always after I run. I also eat several bananas a week and always half a banana before a LR. 3. Wait at least 24 hours after a LR and take a hot bath with some nice bath salts or just epsom salts and you can also stretch you calves in tub by bending at waist and holding onto toes with hands (hope that made sense).

Yall are doing so awesome!!! All these long runs that everyone is doing is great especially with yall up north in the snow. I can't even imagine running in snow. Yes I'm a wimp!

Gotta give a huge plug to RunDisney. They are refunding my race retreat and platinum chear squad packages I brought. I didn't expect it at all but it was a good surprise. I will definitely be sad that sundya morning but I definitely have motivation for 2013 :) And my parents have said they want to come down too in 2013 to help dh be able to get all 3 kids to the finish line to see me finish. Yall better be back for 2013!!

I just have to share this story with ladies who will understand....ARGH! I went out for my long run yesterday morning in chilly Iowa. I was doing 10 miles, and started at around 6:30 AM. I was worried about ice especially since I was starting in the dark, but the footing on the sidewalks was fine with just a few easily visible patches of snow and ice (not enough of either one to use the Yak Trax).

So I was going along fine, doing an out and back route. At around mile 6 (after I had turned around, of course), freezing drizzle was coming down and I thought, "hey, it's getting slick here." I started feeling my feet slipping a tiny bit on almost every step. I kept slowing down to walk when it got bad, and started really skidding....by mile 7 the sidewalks were like ice skating rinks with a very thin film of very slippery (and invisible) ice. By this time I had slowed waaaaaay down.

Then finally, a bit over a mile from home, it finally happened....WHUMP. My feet went out from under me and lickity split I was on the ground. I saw the car that was passing me hit its brakes and pause until I got up and started walking again.

I am lucky, I don't seem to be badly injured other than a rather sore ankle (which was already bothering me) and a sore left arm. I'm loading up on the Advil, today all those parts that bounced off the ground are really sore. I also learned that if you're running and you start to sniffle or cry, your throat closes up and you can't breathe. :rotfl: I considered calling my husband, but pride forced me to finish the run....by walking slowly through the snow and picking my way around the ice.

Anyway, I'm hoping I'm not really injured and can power through. I'm going to do a shorter long run this weekend anyway since we're going to visit the in-laws. The 10 miles still counts, right? My pace was still well within the sweeper. :lmao:

Did 4.5 straight running today and my feet hurt. I do like the ortho inserts but I think like anything they need to be broken in.

of course it still counts - you covered 10 miles! keep an eye on that ankle though, if it is any way injured, you don't want to make it any worse. if it's painful, i think you're better off skipping runs and resting than trying to power through at this point. you definitely have enough fitness to finish the race. glad to hear you are ok...icy roads can be super scary and i've heard many horror stories this week. stay safe out there!

Brrrr... but yeah, it counts! That's some hard core dedication. I really am impressed with all the Northern runners! No thanks- I'll take my 100+ summers in the pools and be able to run all winter long as an exchange!

So--- whining about the ME made me call them. I called. They had it all messed up. This is the 3rd time I have checked on the airport info mind you. Maybe 3rd times the charm? Apparently they had me down twice- yeah, I was staying with myself and arriving once at 11:00am and again at 6:45. (SMH) Oh- and I was coming from Omaha. LOL Yeeeaahhhhhh.... I'm not.

Praying that the lovely Fernannnndooo (that's fun to say!) was able to correct everything.

the kicker? Checked my mail about 5 min ago. Yep- my ME tag arrived today. LOL I wonder if my bags would have been accepted since I am coming from Austin and not Omaha?

Totally counts! Hats off to ya for running in those conditions. :goodvibes

Got about 4.5 mi in today-- it's warmed up (yay 40 degrees!) so the snow has melted where folks have shoveled and it's not cold enough to freeze into ice. Got back home just as the mist was turning to drizzle (drist?). Fortunately it should stay above freezing through the rest of the week. If everything doesn't turn to ice over the weekend (or if the sun/rain can melt it during the day), we should be at 13.1 mi this weekend!

Less than 5 weeks to go!!! (Gosh, I think I may have to suck it up and pay the big $ for the airfare soon.)

Thank you all for the info on the blisters. I will take some notes off your posts and go shopping. I am so new to this I really didn't know where to start but figured there had to be some products out there. Also, being its on the ball of my foot (dead center) I knew sweat would be an issue. I was hoping to do 9 on Wednesday (because weather will be good)but I think I'm going to do a shorter run on Wed to try out the blister cures and then brave the weather on Friday.

We ARE a great group! THANKS

Today I did drag myself to the gym but was just so exhausted, I did one of those not really workout workouts where you just read a magazine and go at a pretty standard rate that some people consider "working out" but I guess if it gets the heart rate up, it's still something :cool1:

Is anyone (or everyone ;)) else trying to lose weight in addition to the training? I am doing the typical gain thing. I definitely feel like my muscles are still building up and until I am more used to exerting all the extra energy, I definitely find myself eating additional calories on the days I work out hard!

Now THAT is determination!! :worship: Take care of that ankle!!

As for me, my run tonight was pathetic, I barely made 2 miles. I'm just down today with work, lately work has been really stressful and depressing. I just hope this whole situation with work doesn't affect my running :sad1:

Oh, my goodness - you Northern / Midwestern princesses make me feel ashamed for whining about the days and days of rain we've had! I haven't run since Wednesday due to either storms or pouring rain. I can handle getting a little wet, but I usually have my 3yo in the stroller so can't really feel good about taking him out in that!!! Supposed to be sunny tomorrow so am going to try my best to get a run in after work with the stroller, and then run again no matter what on Wednesday, when DS3 is in preschool. Although tomorrow will be tough to change into those running clothes - I made tomorrow a PJ party day in my preschool class so I will be wearing flannel jammies all morning!!!!! But going for 11 this weekend, so need to get something substantial in this week.

Seriously- be careful, my friends in snow / ice! It's not worth getting injured this close to the big day! Find a friend with a TM and ask if you can come over a couple of times a week! :)

SaySay has talked me into extending our stay to arrive on Thursday night instead of Friday. We're also looking at airfare that would possibly have us not leaving until late Monday. Oh, darn - what in the world will we do with all that extra time?!?! I gotta say, the DH is being EXTRA supportive. I just have the nagging guilt that even though I KNOW I deserve this, it IS a lot of money for just me, instead of our family. But the hubs is totally on board and happy for me, so I'm very grateful. I remember last year (my first), the day before the race we were in the MK waiting for the parade to start. I called him and said, "Thank you so much for making this happen!" He replied, "Having a good time, are we?" Gotta give a shout out to the prince behind the princess!!!

Anyway... rambling on...

Me too! I find that I'm STARVING a day after working out. I'm trying to suck down some powerade now. I have a headache and I was so busy after my run and cross training that I don't think I got enough liquids in. I'll be shoving everything I can into my piehole by tomorrow.

I got those Active deal compression socks in the mail today. I can't get them on! lol!
