Running has been sidelined now for about 2 weeks. And, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get back into it full out. Started with ill DD, then, hip pain (similar to TinkerAMy) and yesterday I got a stomach bug. UGH! Thanks to all of the cheerleaders supporting those of us whose training has been hitting a lot of bumps in the road. I am trying to stay positive and remember I was in this initially just to finish. I think I can walk the whole thing if need be as I am a very fast walker. I would prefer to run the first 5-6 without walk breaks but my body will not likely allow that!
I used to (as in every single race before the Tink half) run as far as I could without stopping before instituting run/walk breaks - usually about a 10K. Well, my legs would seize up around mile 10 and I struggled through the last 3 every time.
For Tink, I implemented a "run 2 songs/walk 1 song" strategy and I stuck to it for the ENTIRE race. It was 'painful' to stop in that first mile, particularly because I felt so good and not even tired. But, I was determined to maintain for the whole race, which I did - short of two songs that came up on my 'walk' portions that were just too long, so I ran the rest of that song and the next 2.

Well, I shaved 15 minutes off my previous PR. FIFTEEN minutes!!!

I was also so engrossed in keeping my pace that I was totally convinced that there wasn't a mile marker at every mile - I missed 3 or 4 of them. LOL Also, it was so much less of a mind game - I was only running for 2 songs each time, never "OMG I've only gone 8 miles!!!" When I *did* see the mile markers, I saw what the time was and I knew I was ahead of my old pace time, so that kept me going too.
All this was shared to say for those of you that go out strong and then implement a run/walk, perhaps it's not the best strategy for you. Maybe it's worth considering doing run/walk from the beginning . It certainly worked for me!
Oh, and I didn't actually train for the Tink. Nor did I train for the first W&D Half. I DID train for the second W&D Half and I got the same time as the first one. Clearly, training doesn't really seem to make much of a difference for me.

(Disclaimer: I *am* in the Air Force, so I do physical training M/W/F, which usually includes at least a 3 mile run on 2 of the days, so I'm not doing NOTHING - just not following a rigid training schedule.)
