Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

Well it is a balmy 24 here in the Chicago burbs...got 3 miles in...then DD5 said I looked like a Ninja and NOT a Princess in training...lol...Had the Saucony head , neck and face attire...although I cannot breathe well with it covering my mouth...still stayed warm!

Regarding weather last year. I THINK the start was like in the low 50's when we got to the parking lot...I had on a cotton zip up hoodie I got at Walmart which I discarded by the time we got to the corral as I was hot in it and didn't want to deal once the race started. No one else walking with me had on long sleeves.

Today I am wondering if any of the new Fantasyland will be opened up for the race....I saw somewhere Feb 18th for the very first phase, but of course they are tight lipped about it and can't find a confirmation.

I was not at the race nor at WDW that week in 2010, but I was in Anna Maria Island that week and we were wearing winter coats. Apparently it nearly snowed in 2010, and was hot in 2011 (we were at WDW that week in 2011, and it was warm and lovely all week), so it can go either way. Winter in Orlando is completely unpredictable. I plan to bring along tossaway stuff, since even if the weather is warm it's likely to be in the 50s before sunrise, and I gather it's a lot of standing around. No point in using up a lot of energy jumping around trying to keep warm!

SaySay, you just sent me down quite the Internet rabbit hole mentioning that opening date for FL. I haven't been counting on anything, but we have a week vacation before the race, and it would be awesome if we got to check out a FL opening! There are some really cool construction pictures out there, though of course I couldn't find a confirmation. "Early 2012." That could be Feb, right!?!??? Hope so! :worship:

I did the race in 2010 and 2011. I live in a fairly warm climate and dislike cold. Both races I started in corral C or higher and finished the race in over 3 hours.

That said, I found 2010 to be rather cold at the start (low 40s) and warming up toward the finish (60). I wore long sleeves, a singlet over it, and tights. I needed throwaway gloves, sweats, and a sweatshirt, and used a bondi band for cold ears. Sweats were thrown away just before the start, gloves at about mile 5, and sweatshirt about the same.

2011 was about 55 at the start and *warm* and humid at the finish (75+). I wore a running skirt, tshirt, and hoodie, although with my Zensah calf sleeves. Hoodie was discarded about mile 3.

Keep in mind that this race has very little shade. I highly recommend a visor or wicking hat to keep the sun off your eyes, and sunblock especially if you are on the slower side.

Great point about the sunscreen / visor. I just don't think about it when I'm cold, but my forehead got a little red after this weekend's sunny run. My DH had some skin cancer cut out of his back a few months ago and is now obsessed with me wearing sunscreen - and rightly so. We are both very fair-skinned and this was quite a wake-up call. You better believe he won't ship me off to FL w/o total protection!

Kat - have you been to the dr yet? How are the legs?

Happy New Year, Princesses. It's hard to believe that we have less than 8 weeks to go!:thumbsup2 I finished out the year with 3 runs last week and started the new year off right with a run this morning. My longest run 2 weeks ago was 10 miles and I hope to get in another 10 mile run this week. I plan on about 5 or 6 more long runs before the princess -hope to get to 12 or 13 miles. I've been increasing my milage very slowly to avoid injuries and so far so good.

You all are amazing and inspiring!! Keep up the good work!

I am super-fair as well, so am always worried about sun-screen. I also have very light eyes so sunglasses and a visor or hat are almost always necessary when outside, even just for park touring.

Oh, and I forgot to comment on your running-smile post! I almost always not just smile, but say good morning/afternoon, esp when I am with my Galloway group.

Thanks for asking! No, I didn't get a chance to go last week as I was trying to make up for all the missed holiday hours (ah, the life of a contract employee!). It is better today but not gone. I might make an appt for sometime this week.

I'm pretty sure the full I had planned for Feb 12th is off the table, though, unless it completely turns around by this weekend. :sad1:

I tried doing my 5 mile run this afternoon and was coughing and gagging with an upset stomach by mile 1! Nooooo!!!!

I thought that it was best to call it quits and head back home instead of pushing through the next 4 miles even further from home. =(

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all Princesses! I've been away for a while. Thread 2 already? How is everybody's training going?

To those who do long runs on treadmill...:worship::worship::worship:

I can do 4 easily, 5 I get bored big time, so those who do the long distance on the treadmill I salute you.

No Pasta in the park planned right now.

I got 7 in today....yay, longest I have done since July. I walked the last mile and got so bored. I am really in a zen place with my intervals, currently doing 1/1. There is a little park I ended up at and did a few laps around the play field. There is a small hill next to the Playground and when I was doing boot camp there a couple years ago, we would run up the hill backwards, so did that 3 times to break monotony....though the last time I was "running" and well, after that my arch a little sore....but walked out another 1/4 mile.

Felt great today otherwise.....57, overcast and the last 2 miles were in a drizzle, cooled me off so nicely! Happily this slacker got in 3 this week....with the great freeze approaching us tonight, hoping I can keep it going. Going to get up to 10 and then I will be ready I think.

I am still debating my costume....either Belle or Mulan..... hey if I am limping along might was well look good.

oh and airfares sure dropped over the weekend...though Friday to monday is STILL a premium.

I take my iPad to the gym. It definitely keeps me from lookin a the clock! Kill Bill and 300 are great movies to watch while running.

Hey everyone!

I'm still working on getting my ankles' strength and my speed back. I got on the treadmill and was able to get a few miles in, but definitely not where I wanted to be.

As for the questions about the temperature at the beginning of the race; I remember it being a bit chilly, but not terrible. I tend to get hot when I run and since it warmed up a bit during the run I didn't worry about warm clothes. I've also always liked working out in the cold. When I swam I always did better when I was cold (don't know why, just did).

Thanks DisneyBride! I needed to hear that! We all went for a new year's hike instead, and it was lovely. We brought my daughter's best friend, so it was three 9-year-olds, and they had a spitting contest, a butt-slapping contest (ASD son was allowed to call no butt slaps for him but he could slap grown-up butts) and did a flashmob dance on top of the mountain, so while it wasn't my long run, it was a) active, b) fun, and c) good for the whole family. I even got a butt-massage....of sorts. :rotfl2:

I've been planning this since last April, so it's feeling really soon, and it's my first half so I really needed to hear from someone else that I've got time. I did 10 miles on my birthday in November, and I have a work trip where I will be able to do 12 in the end of January, so I should be fine...but sometimes you need someone else to tell you. Thanks for the pep talk! I've been scared of the TM (and the gym is such a zoo in Jan with all those NY resolutionists), so I haven't succumbed yet, but it could happen.

TY and Happy NY! :goodvibes

Cate...I totally get it ...having a running buddy or just someone to vent/talk to is so helpful...I have been in a rut for a few months and coming back to my DIS and FB and running again, has helped me, We lost my mom this summer and the holidays were just...even with a quick Disney trip...that was nice, but ready to take the tree down on the 26th

I had to get on a plane the day after my moms funeral because I was on Team Challenge IL and raised $4000 for Crohns and Colitis (DD14 has Crohns)..I barely trained up to this point...but so glad I went...I ended up doing a run/walk for the Napa to Sonoma Half in 2;50....not my best time, but the best feeling when I crossed that finish line....
So I am going to keep running while I can...I just wish I started running before 2010! ;)

And Thanks to everyone for the reminder of the VISOR....My first half was the Inaugural Wine and Dine, my 2nd, WDW Half,,,so by the time the sun was coming up and it was in my face...I was like....hmmm..didnt think abt this!!!

Anyone else signed up for the Race Retreat? You never know with Orlando weather..I did it for the WDW Half in 2011 and glad I did!

It's starting to get really cold here this week. I don't know how you New England ladies do it! I'm heading for the TM tomorrow. Th gym DH goes to let's you bring a guest and then they email a 5 visit guest pass. Time to use the pass. But this weekend they are predicting temps in the 50s again. Hopefully it will happen and I can get my long run in on the road.

Now that the holidays are over I am so ready to get back to the warmer temps. Winter stinks!

help! i'm having some decision making issues on a possible race this weekend!

there's a 10k in central park this coming sat and i'm debating if i should sign up and use it as a fitness indicator.

pros: a) if it goes well (aka breaking 55 mins) it will give me a huge boost of confidence that I can finally get under the 2 hour mark for a half. (most likely at the nyc half in mid-march, but i'm still having delusions that i will find a way to make a trip to princess this year.) b) there really aren't a ton of 10ks this time of year. c) it's on the same course as the first 6 miles of my likely goal half

cons: a) if it doesn't go well, it's going to completely shatter my confidence. b) requires some re-shuffling of the weekly miles most likely. c) i know it's only mon and i have plenty of time, but my legs are feeling tired for some reason - even though i rested on sun and cross trained today.

what should i doooo....i can't make up my mind!

To Megny: How was the Wine and Dine??? As I said, I am new to running and am just hopeful to complete the Princess. However, I am really enjoying the community feel of these Disney runners and am already planning on 2012 Wine and Dine. Looks great online. I am a person who is really in it for the fun and not time/PRs etc. (never new what PR meant until a few weeks ago!) I am even trying to get some friends who live in Florida to meet me to do W&D. I think it would be great with friends. Right now I am training alone and plan on doing Princess alone. I am not sure if W&D would be good alone. Partly I doubt doing it alone because its at night. What do you think?

babyball, So sorry it took me so long to reply! Been a little busy... :santa:

The Wine & Dine was a really great race... I'm a night-person by nature, so a night race was right up my alley. There was tons of entertainment on course, I found it to be well-lit in all spots, going through the parks at night (beautiful lighting they added in Animal Kingdom, and the Osbourne lights at MGM) were the highlights. I think any Disney race is totally do-able alone... there are so many people around, you will never be lonely! Even with the night race. If you can get some friends to do it, even better! I'm hoping to make it out for one of the fall night races... discussing with hubby whether it will be the new ToT or the W&D.

My mom and I signed up for the Race Retreat. It's our 1st race and we wanted to have a place to go and feel 'relaxed' (yea right!).

We were supposed to get our 10m run in on Sunday because it was supposed to be the 'last' nice day here in Buffalo (it's 14 degrees for a high today!). I got the flu on Sat and sadly it was the 1st time we didn't follow our plans. This weekend it's going back into the 40s so we might try and tackle it outside again. We really dread the thought of TM running for 10+miles!

Hey - a Buffalo girl! I grew up in GA but was born in Buffalo (okay, Elma, actually) and I still have a bunch of family up there. I'm glad we got our own taste of snow here last year (an actual blanket snowfall that lasted a few days) so that I wouldn't have to hear my kids begging me to take them to Buffalo in the winter to play in the snow!

lol! I have a 5yr old that has been begging since November for snow! :goodvibes I wouldn't mind if he never gets to go sledding this year!

So last week I was off from work and I "ran" outside after running on a treadmill for the past two months. I thought I was doing good, mixing it up with inclines and running for 3-4 miles feeling good at the end of each run. On my first run outside - I couldn't even run for 5 minutes without feeling exhausted! I was barely able to run 2 miles each day and even then it took me over 35 minutes! Even walking was absolutely horrible :guilty: So yesterday back to the gym and the first 2 miles were a little rough, but afterwards, I felt good again.

Has anyone had a really tough time adjusting from treadmill to actual street? Is this normal? I am going to try to do at least one weekly evening run on actual pavement, but sometimes it's just not possible, while the gym I can definitely do. I felt as if though every bone and muscle in my body hurt after each run - should I look at changing sneakers for street running? :sad2: Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks for the input on the starting temps from last year. I'm really cold natured and I was freezing walking to the corrals. If the starts this weekend are in the 50's I'll probably just pack a throw away sweatshirt and some gloves.
