Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Way to go! Congratulations on not letting anything stop you from doing what you want. I too would have never dreamt I would be able to run a half marathon due to my weight issues. I put my mind to it and was determined to be fit and healthy. Although I still have quite a ways to go, I am well on my way and feel confident that I will finish this race with strength and I will be very proud of this accomplishment..as you should be too!!

Thank you! It has been a huge adjustment from what running was like before. It is really nice to run at my own pace and not the pace a coach sets for you. It is fun to turn something you used to hate into something you enjoy.

Hi,

Is anyone else having problems connecting to the Wine & Dine site? I just tried to register and received an internal server error message. I was able to successfully view the pages for all of the other races and register for the marathon in January without problems.

Thanks!

I'm 95% sure my DH and I are in for the half (running together, not the relay). We ran the Royal Family 5K in February and got hooked on RunDisney events. The only things left to figure out are if we can get child care lined up and if we think we can meet the Team in Training fundraising goal.

We finally signed up! Me and DH. It will be our first long race; I think he did an 8K in high school, years ago. But I just started running in Dec. My biggest concern is the pacing requirement. I'm running the long runs just over 16 mi/min. That will be my biggest challenge. Did my longest run to date today at 6 mi. I felt good, like I could go longer (not twice as long, mind you!), but that was encouraging.

I have found a running partner, although, I am sure he is going to regret it, haha... My DD and I are running a local 5K next Saturday so that will be my first race to kick off some serious training! I am having a very hard time staying focused and it is making me crazy :(

I had problems yesterday and still can't get it to work today.

It will get easier.

Whee! I am getting more and more excited as we get closer and more people chime in on the thread. Hi Regul8ter! I'm not a heart expert by any means but running has lowered my heart rate by like 20 beats per minute since I started 14 months ago so maybe that's good for folks with a heart condition? Anyway, very cool that you are not letting physical challanges stand in your way. :)

I was having problems with the after party tickets the other day but have since been able to purchase mine. Also, my party is probably going to switch from Coronado Springs to Port Orleans so we can be at a host resort. Anyone else staying there?

And - MAPS ARE UP!! Just today! Looks like a good route. I hope there is some entertainment while on that stright stretch, which looks kind of boring...

Dangy - I concur with Jean. It will get easier. Just this last week I started averaging 10 minute miles for 6 miles stretches and I never thought I would get there.

Is anyone dressing up for this race? I'm tossing some ideas around, but I want to stay comfortable. If a person is used to 60ish degrees weather when they run, do you recommend short or long sleeves for a Florida October night run?

- Carey

Last year there wasw entertainment on the straight away.

And it was muggy and warm. If you are going to wear a costume make sure it won't make you overheat.

Thanks for posting about the course maps...I was waiting to see what the course would be like.
Having never been to WDW..how is the course in terms of hills? Or is it fairly flat? I'm hoping for more flat since I hate hills! lol
I see they also have the 5K up there too...also interesting to see...I will be doing that one as well with my family in the stroller division..

A Hill in Florida is a highway overpass. There are a couple of those on the W&D course, if you think it's a hill depends on where you are living and training now. There were people complaining about them during the race.

Muggy and warm? Oh yeah, it's Florida. I almost forgot.

I was wondering about inclines myself - not so much actual hills or obvious heights, but does anyone know if there are any steady inclines or declines during the half that around over, say, a 1.0 on the treadmill?

I'm confused, so I'm hoping someone can clarify for me. Do you get any spectator tickets with registration, because under registration it says "Exclusive after hours party for runners and their families" Do I have to purchase a ticket for my brother? Or will it come with an extra?

You only get your own party ticket with registration.

There are three inclines but only one is bad. There is a gradual incline when you go over World Drive in both directions, I'd say probably a 3 or so on the treadmill. The steep one is after you make the turn onto World Drive heading towards Buena Vista Drive. From feel and memory I'd say it is a 6 or 7 on a treadmill but it isn't long, at least not for the half. For the full it was pretty brutal because it comes much later.

The course profile is pretty easy, it is the heat and humidity that killed me and sapped about 3 minutes of pace out of me.

Last year you could purchase them ahead of time online and have them either shipped to you or pick them up at will call. I'm not sure if this will change this year along with some of the other things but that is how it was for the 2011 race weekend.

OregonGirl - Thanks for the welcome! I am really excited about this. Im very hopeful that I will be able to make it. Congrats on how far you have already come. I look forward to getting to the point that you are at.

kaj1436 - Glad you signed up. My husband is not coming. He is staying home with the kids. I am doing the race with a friend of mine, but doubt that I will be able to keep her pace. You can always hang with us!

sunshine 269 - Welcome. I know how you feel. I am nervous too! Hopefully the Disney excitement will help to finish! That's what I'm hoping..

krisnchris - How are you training? I am curious because from your time, it seems like we are very similar. I am doing the Jeff Galloway but doing 2:1 intervals. It is my first too and am looking for anyone and everyone to talk too!

I also saw today that it changed on the event details. Instead of the drink tickets, runners now get one wine or beer at the finish line and then the $10 gift card for inside. Did someone else already post this?

Does anyone know if the gift card can be used at the parks the next day? My husband and daughter will be there cheering me on and I don't think I'll be buying tickets for the party since it will already be a long day for all of us since hubby, DD and I are doing the 5K in the morning.
