Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

thanks.....and that confirms that I don't want my 5 yr old there at 2am.

question now about treadmills.......first timer never run before.....is it better to start with a manual treadmill so I can control how fast I go, or to go with the electronic one and risk falling on my face?

I think they should limit the tickets to the runners + 1 only. At the very least they shouldn't sell tickets at the park so only those that got them ahead of time could get in. That would eliminate the general public walking out of the park, buying a ticket, and walking right back in (many of them pretty drunk).

See, now I can't support a "+1 only" option because we're a family of 3 with one runner, so I need 2. But I would DEFINITELY support ONLY selling to racers in advance and NOT the gen pop at the park!

You'd probably have no problem finding someone here that wasn't going to have anyone come with them let you use their +1. Lots of people use this race as a quick solo weekend. I'd offer up my +1 if I was going to do it solo and that was the set up but I don't think you have to worry. Disney sees the dollar signs in their eyes and wants to sell as many tickets as they can.

Do they still sell manual treadmills?

Here's the thing... treadmills should be a last resort option for running; or, used as a tool for specific training. Last resort options would include weather, safety, and needing to be in the house or club for the kids, etc. Tool options are really hills. Training exclusively on the treadmill can be a bad thing as you loose all feel for relative speed and it can shorten up your stride. If you get in the habit of handle holding it can create other structural issues over a long term.

Having said all this, yes I own a mill and have access to them at the club. I run hills and do speed work on mine. During the heat of the summer, I will run long on occasion. Though, if you are planning a race in the heat, training in the heat is a necessary evil. Your race will not be in the air conditioning.

I know there are still manual mills. Avoid them like the plague unless you are a walker. You simply cannot get enough momentum to keep the belt turning. This leads to pushing to stay on the front and then structural issues as you adapt to the lean.

I second all of this and want to add that another downside of training too much on the treadmill as opposed to the road is you use your muscles differently on a treadmill than you do on the road. On a treadmill you are moving your legs to keep up with the belt, on the road you are propelling yourself forward.

That doesn't mean the treadmill can't have it's place (though for me it is a last resort and I'd prefer to run in a snowstorm) but it shouldn't be used exclusively or even a majority of the time.

But for some people running on the treadmill is the only option most of the time. I can only run outside maybe once every two weeks. Running exclusively on the treadmill is not ideal but it's better than not running.

I have 2 children and finding someone to stay with them while I'm running isn't always an option......the treadmill would allow me to keep running while not having to worry about the kids.

i did make it out for a run/walk this morning......1.8 miles in 20 minutes......I figure that's not bad for my 1st time.

WDW Today has a great interview with a runDisney rep about W&D in today's episode.

Listened to the podcast and I think they said 11,000 runners/walkers and 6,000 spectators. It seemed like they balked at saying how many spectators there were last year.

Chris, I am thinking they lost count of spectators inside Epcot.

I will say that with 3 young daughters, I use the treadmill for probably 75% of my running. I have found that it is more difficult to run on the treadmill than running outside. I think the reason is that with the treadmill, you can't change your pace. You are always running at a constant speed. You can change your stride to change it up a bit, but with running outside it is much easier to speed up and slow down. This makes it much easier to keep a pace over a long period of time than having to run at the same constant speed.

The overall training is more important so run on the treadmill if that is easier for you. Now I will say to make sure to get out and run some outside. I would definitely run some of your longer runs outside. Biggest thing is to get the miles in one way or the other.

Running for the first time in any kind of race this October and i'm a bit nervous so i'm over thinking as usual lol. I'll be arriving to Disney on October 1st, around 10am and will go straight to WWOS after check in, is this enough time for the expo and to pick up the packet? Thank you!

You should be alright, assuming you have rested enough.

Signed up yesterday for the relay (I'm the first runner) I can't wait! I hurt my knee and might have surgery next month, but recovery time should be smooth, and plenty of time to train!

What's the course entertainment like? What I'm really wanting to know - should I use my own music? I really like to listen to music when I'm training. Trying to figure out what will work for the race.

Can't speak for the W&D, but I was totally fine with the entertainment in January. Granted, I don't run with my iPod anyway, but... Especially in races, for me there's just something about the camaraderie of participating in a communal event like a race - even if it's just the little "good job"s that pass between runners, it's a community. I personally would feel weird being in a little bubble in the middle of that.

My one bit of advice is that if you insist on using one (they're discouraged for a reason) to please keep it low enough that you're aware of what's going on around you. I've seen collisions in local races where someone had their ears plugged and never heard the person passing them say "on your right/left" and veered right into them as the person was passing having done everything THEY were supposed to do. And I've almost been taken out by someone who was SO unaware of anything going on around him he started swinging his arms wildly - and he had a huge armspan because I was in no way right up on him - seemingly in time to whatever was in his ears and didn't hear me or anyone else yelling at him to watch out. And there were stories on here that during one of the races this year (I can't remember which), there was an ambulance trying to get through and this one woman was totally tuned out of everything but her music and was impeding the progress of the ambulance until someone physically moved her. You need to be aware of what's going on around you, so keep the music low if you simply can't live without it.

It wasn't enough for me...I run with music regularly and parts of the course are somewhat entertainment free. I turned it off and on as needed.

Also, with a night race, what are you all planning on doing for food that day? My first race and a night one; not sure how to plan!

Oh, another question - is there a way they mark the miles for you?
