Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

If I recall correctly, the only bussed the leg 2 runners to the AK parking lot swap area, no spectators.

I don't know if this is how Disney will do it but I've never seen anyone other than runners allowed in the swap area. Maybe they can be outside of the area but having kids in there would cause all kinds of problems.

Yeah, only runners can get on the bus to AK. No kids.

The transportation stuff is very easy. Both teammates take the bus to the start line. Runner #2 drops their bag with the bags of the runners who are running all 13.1 miles. Runner #2 takes the #1 bag with them to the relay point at Animal Kingdom. Runner #2 gets on the bus to AK and waits for #1 to show up. The course is very well marked for the relay runners.

So do both relay runners have to show up and do any sort of check in at the start area? Do they want to make sure both runners are there before they let runner #1 head to the corrals?

Also, how does it work with recieving the medals.. Do both runners get them at the end? And if so, where?

Thanks!

There's no check in at the start area. I assume that you and your relay buddy are responsible for knowing that the other one is there.

Not sure about the medals. I think, if I recall correctly, that runner #1 gets it when the bus takes them to the finish line area.

Not sure about this... I think that the Runner 2 was at the start. I seem to recall them passing us while we were corraled.

For the W&D - No spectators were allowed on course; except for the segment running through the resorts.

That's what I meant. Both runners go to the start, and the #2 runners get on the bus to the relay point.

It was really chaotic at the start, so I hope it's organized better this year. As soon as we got to the staging area, the second leg runner had to get a sticker for their bib saying they were doing the second part of the relay. I was told we had to have the sticker on our bib to get on the bus, but there wasn't anyone checking that I saw.

We are currently booked Aug 26-30 at POR with free dining for our anniversary. I'm thinking of changing our dates to Sept 30-Oct 4, so I can try for the half (my first). I ran the 5k at the Princess Half 2010, but didn't this year. I'd much rather do the relay, but dh just laughed at me when I asked him to participate!

advertise here. you could probably find someone to run with you. you'd have to work out payment and all, though.

I did it!!!! I FINALLY ran outside for the first time ever (let's keep in mind I just started running one month ago):cool1: I ran 4mins, walked 2mins for 2miles and just finished it in a little over 24mins. Now that may not be anything to you avid runners but I am so proud of myself. Thought I'd share:rotfl: And on a side note, what a big difference compared to running on a treadmill. Outside was MUCH HARDER.

Yea you!! I'm promising myself to get outside this Saturday or next at the lastest!

:cheer2:

I trained for 5 months on the treadmill and only ran outside a few times. When I ran my first 5k (Epcot) it really made me realize how different it is! It's not as convenient to run outside, but I'm going to have to make myself do it at least once or twice a week.

I have a friend that is considering it, but if she decides not to, then I'll do just that!

Officially signed up. Only running 3 miles right now, but I have a plan to get up to 13 by the time the race comes. Wishing well to all of you out there training. Question to everyone training:

A)What kind of shoe is everyone training in? I have a pair of Asics Gel-glide 2 that I use for the road and Nike Trail runners for the trails.

B)What if any kind of special sock do you use? I have been looking for different kinds of socks and not sure that the best value out there is. I have seen as high as 12/pair

I think you have plenty of time between now and January. Good luck.

To answer your questions:

A) I train in Mizuno Wave Riders (might switch to Wave Precision) but in reality what we train in has nothing to do with you. I would recommend going to a good running store and having a professional shoe fitting. A good store will measure your foot sitting and standing and analyzes your arch. They should also watch you run (usually on a treadmill) and analyze your gate. Then you can do some A/B comparisons and get the right shoe.

B) A lot of my socks are $8 to $12 a pair but if you go to RunningWarehouse and use the team code WISHD you can find good deals and get a 15% discount. The key is to get something that wicks. When I run there is not a single piece of cotton anything on my body anywhere.

First a general comment… shoes are one of the more personal things a runner has. Not picking on you but what works for me may not work for you or anyone else on the board. General notes on shoes like, my Newton brand shoes take some getting used to or they wear out 50 miles faster than other pairs are great notes. Picking a model because some one else wears them is not a great idea. I did some searching to see what kind of shoes you were in and that leads me to a few general comment for newer runners on the board.

a) Not being too nosey, but how old are your shoes and where did you purchase them. You really do not need to answer here… but you should, if you have not already, head to a running shoe store for a fitting. If you have, I am offering this to others on the list. Take you current shoes with you and a pair of the socks you plan to run in. You do not want to go to a mall store or a big box store like Dick’s, etc for your initial fitting. The running store will look at your feet, your stride and the soles of your current shoes. Shoes come in three basic styles, cushioned, stability and motion control. Cushioned are for those who under pronate generally noted by high arches and a wear patter on the front of the running shoe long the outer edge. Motion control are for those who over pronate; generally those with flatter feet, wear patterns coming off the inner toe, or are on the heavier side of normal. Stability shoes are for the rest.

Running shoes have a life. A good log book noting all your running miles is in order. Shoes live between 350 and 500 miles. It depends on whether you run daily, rotating with other running shoes and stride. A serious runner will generally have at least two if not three pairs of shoes. One is the higher mile shoe and the second is the lower mile shoe. These are rotated between every run, especially if running day after day. Generally a great plan would be to start you second pair of shoes out when your first pair get to about 200 miles. The third pair is in the box and used occasionally on short runs – it is a great barometer when comparing the ride to the oldest pair… you will be able to tell when to retire them.

B) Socks are going to be expensive as will running clothes. Lumping them all into a single group for a second; anything touching you should be a tech fabric, not cotton. Tech fabrics like dri-fit, cool-max, etc wick moisture off the skin and help keep your temperature regulated. Cotton on the other hand will retain moisture and the fibers will chafe you – badly. It will weigh you down after a few miles. Wash all tech fabrics WITHOUT fabric softener. The silicon in the softener will plug the fibers and ruin the clothing’s ability to wick moisture.

Most tech fabric socks are thinner. The running store will have a few brands on the shelves. Look for ones with hidden seems to help keep blisters away. There are a lot of interesting ideas out there about socks and you may need to run in a few brands to find what works best for you.

Hope this helps some.

I wear Nike running socks...can't remember the exact name of them, but they are thin, no show, and have a gray "banded" area around the arch for support...and I absolutely love them! I think they run me somewhere around $9/pair...but the first time they were all dirty and I ran in a pair of Under Armour socks I had, I knew they were worth the $$ and bought enough so I wouldn't run out again if I didn't have time to do laundry! But it's whatever works for you...same with the shoes. I wear Asics too (Cumulus), but was fitted for them at a local running store so everyone will be different. I have 2 pair...one for short runs and the other I use for long runs only. Aw, speaking of running shoes...sniff, sniff, I'm donating my first pair this weekend after I muddy them up at the Warrior Dash! I saved them just for this, but I get sentimental with objects sometimes like that....lame, I know! :confused3

morning WISH'ers!! A friend and I are thinking of registering for the 1/2......we are doing a 5K here at home in June, then would have the rest of the summer to train for the 1/2.

have to say that i've never run before but have always been interested in it. i was at Disney in january for marathon weekend and was so impressed with everyone for all their medals!

so....logistically i'm seeing problems right off the bat. we both have small children that are simply not suited for a very late evening like this. I'm thinking they could stay up to see us off, but then we would have to get a sitter so our husbands could be there at the finish line and for the after party. and what was so bad about the party last year? just bad organization?

and what was so bad about the party last year? just bad organization?

They sold way too many tickets so the lines at the kiosks were longer than during the day. Not only did they allow as many friends and family of runners to buy tickets but they also told the general public that if they wanted to stay they can just buy a party ticket.

Because FW was closed all of the people stayed in WS. They did have the rides in Mexico and Norway open but a lot of people didn't know it because all the paperwork and information before the race said no rides would be opened. They announced the rides would be opened from the stage before the start (in the field, not from the stage in the starting area) and a lot of people were doing other things and not paying attention.

I think they should limit the tickets to the runners + 1 only. At the very least they shouldn't sell tickets at the park so only those that got them ahead of time could get in. That would eliminate the general public walking out of the park, buying a ticket, and walking right back in (many of them pretty drunk).
