Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I haven't paid the fee yet (I'm doing it at the NYC Half Expo assuming RunDisney has a booth there - otherwise I'll do it online when I get home from that expo), but now that I got my flight to LAX for the DL Half booked for all of $7.50, I'm definitely in for the Half! Just my reg fee and my flight down there as I'll be staying with my sister. The evening start makes it much easier for me to trust her to get me where I need to go on time (one of my running partners almost didn't make the corral on time - and he never got up to me and the other one in the corral - because they insisted they would be there...and overslept and got stuck in traffic). :D

Does anyone know if there's a charity option for this race (either through TNT or some other organization)?

TIA!

lorasmom - I think virtual TNT (now called Flex) will be participating in this race. Some of the Florida chapters will probably also be participating.

I have a question for anyone on here that ran Wine & Dine last year and did not stay at a host hotel...we're thinking of staying at the Caribbean Beach and just taking a taxi to the nearest host resort that evening and catching a bus from there. I'm thinking OKW looks to be pretty close. From reading the course description and looking at some maps, I'm thinking this would be an OK plan since it doesn't seem like the race will run in the area of the CBR or OKW so I'm thinking road closures won't be an issue. Can anyone comment on this plan or think of any obstacles I'm missing? Am I totally wrong about the road closures? I figured we would just cab it back to CBR after the race after party...shouldn't have any trouble with that either, hopefully :confused3

If this plan won't work, I think we'll just pick an All-Star. I wish something other than POR was offered for moderate level...stayed there once and didn't really care for it.

Thanks for any input!

I stayed at Saratoga at my sister's DVC. We had a rental car and even needed to park. There was a line of cars to get in, but it moved relatively quickly and there were no problems. I was at the start area with plenty of time to hang out with WISHers . . . even despite the horrendous bag claim debacle (which I am assuming they will HAVE to make more efficient.)

Oh heck, time to chime in.

After a few years of badgering, my wife has finally broken down my defenses and convinced me to sign up for this as my first half. Until this point, I'd fervently maintained the only way I was running farther than 5 miles involved fleeing from the cops or hit men....and after 6, they could just shoot me and get done with it ;)

She's previously run the WDW 1/2 and the WDW full in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Time to put down the backpack and camera and step on the other side of the rope.

Never done a race longer than 5K, so this should be interesting....but also a good way to train for some of the longer adventure style races (Mud Run, Tough Mudder, etc).

I'll be using one of the RunKeeper FitnessClasses for my training program which will probably start in a couple months. Currently working on dropping my 5K time :)

I figured they would... I reached out to them via their website a few times (and email, and phone...), but no response yet. Oh well!

Thanks!

I'm currently doing the beginners 1/2 training program by Jeff Galloway on RunKeeper. It's been great :thumbsup2

I plan to do his next program when I start training again for w&d

I plan on starting the program also but want to wait a few weeks. In the mean time I am trying to do 30 mins every other day and a longer run on the weekends. I have my first 5k this weekend and am NERVOUS!

I'm doing the 'Beginner 5K' one right now, just to see if I like the format (I do) and get in shape for Warrior Dash and some 5Ks. I'm looking at doing the Mike Deibler Intermediate 1/2 program; looks like it'd work pretty well for me. I've got this mental aversion to the run-walk strategy, despite knowing that it works well for a lot of people. I'd rather just plod through it running the whole way. That's my stubborn streak ;)

I know exactly where you're coming from....my first 5K was about a year ago now. Just relax and have fun. Keep in mind that ou're racing against your own mental and physical limits...not the clock and ESPECIALLY not the other people on course. Just do your thing. Each successive race gets easier. :)

Run/Walk definitely makes a difference. When I ran my first 5K in September, I just walked when I got tired figuring I'd rest and then start running again. That starting up again was HARD. Time? 41:36

Sunday I ran a 5K (only 6 months after the first) using the run/walk strategy where I was walking at fixed intervals from the start. Doing that starting back to run wasn't so hard and I had gas left in the tank for a good kick at the end. Time? 35:37.

6 minute PR! My running club's coach was incredulous at a 6 minute improvement in 6 months - until I told him the difference was the consistent run/walk. And then he said it made perfect sense (not in a degrading way).

Just sayin. :goodvibes

This! Don't let yourself get swept up by other people's pace. Go at your own pace. My first 5K I had my iPod with me and made a race playlist that started me off at a slightly slower pace so that I wouldn't go out too fast. I'm getting better at it now and don't use the iPod anymore. Of course it helps that most of my races include timed corrals.

Looks to me like they opened registration today. And provided some info.

I couldn't remember what my team's finish time was for last years W&D when I signed up, so just guessed our expected time of finish of 2:46 (thanks to Coach's suggestion)

Afterwards, I found the link from last year's active site and was able to email runDisney with our true time! putting us just under 2:45!! :cool1::cool1:

Race time was accepted for our team since we are the same team as last year! Woohoo thank goodness for that 2:44:56 finish:scared1:;)

I am already signed up for the half, but would sure love to do the 5k also if it wasnt so early in the day. I work 3rd shift so most of my running is done in the afternoon which makes the half perfect!

Just got an email with some information that is looking promising. More food stations, more rides open and a "very limited" number of spectator tickets. If they really follow through with the recommendations of the runners from last year, this could be one great party afterwards. Here is what I got in case some are not signed up with rundisney to get the emails.

RUN
Make sure you reserve your spot in the half marathon or half marathon relay before April 17, 2011 to save on the entry fees. The 5K will be held at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Park on Saturday, October 1 at 7:00 a.m. and the Kids’ Races will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

DRINK
The finish line will be located in the Epcot® parking lot and only steps away runners (21 years old or older) will have the opportunity to enjoy their first beer in the finish line beer garden. The new finish line location will include an expanded bag claim and changing area so you can get ready for the runner’s night out.

EAT
We know why you run… to eat! In addition to the Epcot® International Food & Wine Festival’s 25 international marketplace kiosks along World Showcase, there will be 20 more dining locations available throughout the park to redeem your "taste" included with your race registration.

FUN
Run to the fun! The Finish Line Party will include select attractions along World Showcase and inside Future World like Soarin’, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Maelstrom water adventure in the Norway Pavilion and more. Live entertainment and character meet & greets will take place throughout the evening. Friends and family will be able to purchase spectator tickets to the Finish Line Party in April, but availability will be very limited. Stay tuned for updates on party tickets and race details at rundisney.com/winedinerun.

One of the big things in today's email was the registration deadlines being extended. When they first opened up registration on Feb 14th, I think March 27 was the deadline to register before the cost went up. Now, it is April 17th. Wish I would have waited a little longer, but oh well. The secondary deadline before another increase was extended, too, until May 22. All the added details about 20 additional food locations, and attractions in Future World being open are a step up from last year. The finish line beer garden sounds pretty awesome, too!

Personally I'd prefer wine. SO not a beer girl here. Oh well. :(

As long as I can buy 2 after-party tickets, I'll be happy. Those of us that are a family of 3 with one runner can't really buy into a "one after-party ticket per runner" philosophy. :)
