They have Gymboss for sale in most of the running stores, usually the ones that are specifically for runners. That could be because of the popularity of the Galloway program around here, though.

I use an interval app for my Android based phone. Music, GPS, and interval training, like a gymboss/garmin/mp3 player in one, plus all the apps were free! :)

The Gymboss looks like a great interval tool. Absent that I would suggest a Timex Ironman 100 lap watch. It also has multiple continuous countdown timers that work well for Run/walking. It's only real advantage is being to see you time whil moving where the gymboss seems to be a waist worn device. I like the vibrating feature of the GB. If you have never started a large race with runners in the 9 minute range and slower you will understand the huge benefit of having the vibrating feature.

The only other thing I would offer is that if you are running in the 10 minute pace range and work and train for it you can easily train into a 10:1 ratio allowing you to stop at the mile markers. It really makes race day a lot less worrisome.

would love that, but my phone doesn't have apps, and don't really wanna carry that along with i touch...LOL I don't wanna feel like I am moving all my beloved technolog items on my body....LOL

I like having my phone on me in case of emergencys.

For those doing wal / run or run/walk plans what are using to help you with interval changes?

I bought a Timex Ironman 50-lap watch from Target for about $40.

This is what I was wanting to do, but I am not in the 10 minute pace range yet so I am not sure if I will be able to do it or not.

Understood - when slower then that your need for walk breaks increases and hitting mile markers is more difficult. Though hang in threre. I went from a 16+ paced first marathonon to a 9:10 best in less than 5 years with a lot of focus.

I will second this. I have gone from barely able to complete 2 miles on the treadmill with an 18 min mile, to a 5K time of 33:45, and that has just been since January of this year. I have already completed one half with a 14:34 mm, and am about to do my 2nd.

Oh yeah, and I lost 40 lbs along the way, which definitely helps with speed!

Focused training is the key, and gradually ramping up your speed and mileage. You won't go from 16 to 9 in a day... I am happy as long as each week shows some improvement in some category (with a few ick days/weeks of course, it happens). This can consume your life some, but hey, at least it's with something healthy!

How many of us on this thread are doing the Disneyland Half in Sept? That thread is very quiet...so must mean everyone is out there running! :) Have any of you wore compression socks after running? I am curious about what they do, what benefits they have, etc. I have read some articles where runners wear them during the race and others where they put them immediately on after the race. Any difference between brands?

I had a rough time after the Princess half as it was my first race. It was my fault because I didn't listen about icing afterwards and to keep moving. I felt great afterwards, honestly I didn't even feel like I had just run a 1/2, but between waiting in line at Space Mountain and sitting for lunch at Liberty Tavern, I went from feeling great to still feeling good but barely being able to move. Inclines were the worst and the only way I got out of my car after we drove back to Atlanta was by using almost an entire tube of bengay that they luckily had at a gas station...:sad2:

Any tips for recovery this time?

I'll be there, but only as a cheerleader :cheer2: My BF is running it and will fullfill his requirement for the Coast to Coast medal so he's super excited! I started wearing a Nike sock while running that uses compression around the arch...I love them! I also am not quite sure what the benefits to them are and if I should wear full compression socks after running for any benefits, but I will say that one morning I didn't have any of those socks that were clean so I wore an old pair of regular wicking Under Armor socks to run in and man did I notice a difference! So, whatever they do, they work...I call them my "magic socks"...and stocked up on them so I should always have a clean pair if I'm behind on laundry. :laundy:

I would love to do the Disneyland half, but WDW is an easy drive, and Disneyland requires a lot of advance planning. I am not sure I will ever get DH to agree to something like that, since we have yet to even make it to Disneyland on vacation!!

Are you going? It's getting pretty close, no?

I have never used compression socks but have heard good things about them.

My group stayed moving all day after the Princess, for the most part. We toured Epcot until 2-3 PM then hit the pool and hot tub (and, well, drank), ate dinner, and finished the night at Jellyrolls. I was shocked at how sore I wasn't, actually.

Shelby I'll be at the DL 1/2. These early long runs, I have actually enjoyed over the TM training I did for the Princess. I had hoped to get my CTC last year, but my mom got very ill and I was having a severe IT band issue.

Kat Great job on the weight loss! You are a very active young lady-I am a bit older than you, but still hanging in there-I try to stay a step ahead of my two princesses (they are in their 20's).

I don't know anything about the compression socks. After the Princess Half, I rested by the pool, iced my knees, drank lots of water, and got up every now and then to stretch. I walked about a mile to get dinner-from HS over to the Boardwalk (can't remember the name of that ice cream shop) and road the boat back to HS.

Yep, I am going so I get my coast to coast. It is very close!! Sept. 5th will be here before I know it. :scared1: It isn't convenient by any means...since the Princess was driving distance (okay a long driving distance. ;)) but it should still be fun and a lot warmer. :) Every Disney fan needs to go to Disneyland at some point. There is so much to do in Southern California and I hope I can move afterwards and enjoy it! :rotfl: I am glad that a few of you will be there too! :yay:

Sept 5th I will be driving to WDW! We always do a Labor Day week trip, since the crowd level is low and we don't have children.

Good luck to both of you! So exciting. CTC medal, I am jealous!

Joan, thanks!! I am 34, so not sure how young I am anymore! We are finding each other all over WISH lately. :)

I had no idea WDW is not busy during Labor Day week. It should be starting to cool off by then too! I bet you will have so much fun! I hear that Disneyland is a different story and very busy over Labor Day. I hope not!!

We have gone every year since 2006. 2006, the Tuesday after Labor Day, we walked into the MK at 11AM and there were literally about 15 people on Main Street. I have seen Soarin' as a 5 min wait. Toy Story for some reason is still slammed. That ride is impossible to get on without FP!!

It gets a little more crowded every year due to free dining, but it's still pretty low.

It's of course hurricane season, but living in NC we mostly ignore that. We are as likely to get one here as there, we drive so airline delays/cancellations are not an issue, and in Orlando most hurricanes = day or two of rain. I would rather be sitting in my 1bed DVC with a beer than at work any day!

Sorry, totally OT...

Yeah, I think even for those vacationing at the end of August/beginning of September, Labor Day is a travel day, at best. Most everyone is either in school by then (south) or starts school the next day (rest of country).

I just registered for the 1/2!!!

Once your register you get a discount code for park tickets
2 day park hopper $129.93 each
3 day park hopper $170.40 each

January was really slow when I was in College Program. No waits anywhere! I think any of us would rather be sitting in a DVC or any other Disney hotel room than at work any day! IF money was no object, I know I would be driving right now!

It would be nice to theDL and get the coast to coast medal, however WDW is only a 3 hour drive for me as opposed to DL.

You can still do the WDW Half Marathon in January and get it with the Disney Princess. I just wanted to make it a lot more difficult! Plus, I am from the west coast, so it was a good excuse to see my favorite part of the country. Believe me, I am not thrilled about flying from Atlanta to L.A. I would rather be able to drive.
