the princess half is still months away - is anyone planning on doing a half before then? or some other race? i'm only at 4 miles as my LR right now but if i follow a 12 week plan i should be able to do a half by oct/nov. should i do one and then just retrain again?

i feel like b/c the princess half is so long from now i don't want to lose my training momentum once it starts to get cold and nasty here.

I am currently training for my 1st HM in October. It's one that I wanted to do last year but I was on call at work. I let it go, let the whole HM thought go. Deep down, I knew I still wanted to complete a HM. This Spring, my sister said we should run the Disney Princess. Over the 4th of July, I signed up for that race and then the DPHM.:)

I will do a HM before I am 50 and one when I am 50. I still can't believe I am doing this. I went from a couch potato to running. I am proof that if I can do this, anyone can!;)

I am currently training for my very first HM September 26. After that I will take about 2 weeks to recover and then start a maintenance HM training plan and then start another Smart Coach HM plan for the Princess

Great plan. I was wondering how I was going to take a little break from training after my October HM and not lose what I have gained.

Laurie's advice is great. So let’s assume you pick building up to the 8 mile level, follow the plan to the first 8 mile run. From there you want to maintain that level of fitness so I would start running a pyramid set of long runs. Or you run 8 miles on the plan, run 6 the following weekend and 4 the next. After the 4, the series continues 4-6-8-6-4-6-8…. Work backwards on your training plan. Jump into the plan 1-2 weeks before the point where you jumped off. And jump back on. Follow the plan to the race. Keep the midweek work fairly constant.

Thanks so much Coach! I appreciate your input. This will help me figure out a HM maintenance plan.:)

What is your longest run to date? What is your pace?

I would either up intervals or speed for your weekly short run(s), and up distance by a mile a week for your long run.

The thought behind Galloway is that the walk breaks for rest help you to go faster during the running intervals and/or are able to go longer distances.

Jeter,

To keep things simple keep the 4 minute cycle constant. Go to 2:2 if ready. Eventually work up to a 3:1. Once there and comfortable expand to a 4:1, 5:1...

ADDED[ forgot this forum doesn't nest quotes. - meant as a different through for Jeter]

Ack! I totally misread the initial post. I agree with coach to some extent. I would go from run 1 / walk 3 to run 1 / walk 2, work up to 1:1, then 2:1, etc. Or, go to 2:3, 2:2, 3:1.

Sorry for the confusion, usually in describing intervals, the run number comes first. :goodvibes

Sorry about that Kat. The plan from M4M is called a walk/run plan so I ten to write the numbers in the form of walk/run.

I completed my first 4 mile run yesterday, and felt so good when I finished that I felt as if I could the same 4miles over again, thats why I thought maybe I should add more running. I am currently running on average a 12 1/2 min per mile.

I might try out 1:2 1min walk/2 min walk. Out of curosity Kat what are the intervals that yoiu are currently use?

Once again Kat and Coach you are always so helpful. Than k you very much, and I will let you kinow how the change works out for me tomorrow :)

Now we have confused you. I would also suggest going to Galloway's site for a little more detail on his latest thoughts. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/walk_breaks.html

I believe he pushes the overall interval length around is based on speed. When I first coached with his plan we were really sticking with a 4 minute interval and just playing with the intervals. To me the goal would be to carefully swing around to a point where you ran and walked the same times and then start running more.

Oh boy, nopws that read your post coach, I just realized I forgot about orginal post about staying on a 4min interval. (What can I say, I like to make thinks confusing..hehehe)

Let me ask you this, would be safe to do 2:2?

I train with the largest Galloway group in the country.

I am in the 12 min pace group, and we do 2:1 intervals. The 13 min does 1:1, and the 14/15 is at 30:60 (I think?) which equates to 1:2.

I started at a 1:8 and worked my way up to 1:1 (when I joined the Galloway group at the 13mm pace), and then 2:1.

I also think it's individual. Getting to 1:1 and then moving to 2:1 really worked for me, but you have to do what's comfortable to you.

Hi everyone!

I love this thread and it has been very helpful for someone just starting out. I am planning on training for the Princess Half Marathon and I was just wondering when it will fill up. Doesn't it usually show a percentage? I am on week 5 of C25K and want to make it through to the end before signing up since that is when I will start Galloway's plan for training for the half.

Thanks!

Not sure the answer, curious myself. We are on the same plan! I start week 5 c25k this week, then will do Galloway training. Good luck on your training, I am loving the C25k. I did 2 half marathons 10 years ago and stopped running....I did it with a Galloway group and it was so great, never thought I could do it. Now I just want to get back into it and figured if I can run, i get a little ME time LOL.

Happy Training!

Julie

generally the website will post a % full indicator on the registration link at 50%. Then it is usually updated on a 5% increment. On occation it will make larger jumps. I would pull the trigger no later than 70-80% to assure a last minute entry panic does not shut you out.

I'm officially booked for the weekend of the half now. I haven't signed up for the race yet, but will probably do so soon. I'm planning to do the 5k on Saturday morning with my mom, then the full on Sunday. Can't wait!

I need someone to talk me through losing a toenail. I have a wonderful blister up under one of my toenails, and I am sure I will lose it eventually. It hurts pretty bad. Should I pop the blister to release some of the pressure? I know blisters are self contained vessels that shouldn't be popped, but the pressure under the nail is growing.

Best to let the blister subside naturally.......

Not being one to do that - I tend to mess with the nail just enough so the blister will pop and the pressure released. There is not a real sanitary method to keep the former blister pocket sanitary so use something like polysporin along the quick for a few days to help keep infections down.

Yes, no matter what you have donated a toenail to the running gods. It will leave in about 4-6 months, depending on how you body grows nails.

Guess that means I am no longer a pretend runner, but a real one. :rotfl:

I am planning on doing a 10k this fall, probably Nov. I am kind of corny I guess but I want my first HM to be the Princess so I am purposefully not running one before it.

:rotfl: Darn I guess that even though my sister and I run together she is a real runner and I am still a pretend runner. :lmao:

I have two HMs in Sept and I am doing the Marine Corp Marathon on Oct 31st.

Question - We are checking out from the Contemporary on the day of the DPHM - has anyone had success in asking for late checkout because of the HM?

I registered for a 10K and a half marathon this fall. I might try to do a 5K for Thanksgiving Day or a 5K Holiday Run in December. I honestly don't feel that I am ready for a 1/2 this fall, but I'm keeping with the training plan so hopefully I'll be ready and finish feeling good. :) Oh, I almost forgot, I'm also doing the Halloween 5K at Disney! When I type it all out here, it sounds like a lot! But it does keep motivated.

Yes I have had success in asking...... No, was the answer. It is very unusual to get a late checkout from Disney. But then there is alway a first time.
