Any suggestions for how to dress when it is raining?

Also, since some are having trouble with toes this week (myself included) does it help to try to bandage the toe to prevent the blisters and protect it while it heals?

I don't dress any differently than I would for sunny whether for that temperature, except for putting on my wicking cap.

Speaking of toes, with all of the HM training I am undertaking the only affliction I am having is a callus/corn forming on my right big toe. Has anyone had any problems with this?

Laurie's running and blogging has inspired me! I started a blog last night and I plan on using it as a way to keep myself in check.

i hope some people will read it. but even if it's just my husband reading it then i'll know i need to update it. and i don't want to update it by saying, "meh, didn't run today. i'm lazy."

tiarathon.blogspot.com - nothing special yet. like my running, it's a work in progress

i like the idea of making sure to run in the rain. it's true, who knows what the weather will be like on race day. my girlfriend ran the boston marathon 3(?) years ago and it snowed! she really only trained on the treadmill so it was even more difficult for her on race day (not that running a marathon would be easy!)

That's awesome, about your blog. I log my runs on Facebook, and definitely, from time to time post that I didn't run because of laziness. :)

That is so cool! I have mine at sparkpeople.com (obviously) and its a win-win situation because people learn and get inspired from my blog AND I get instant feedback from my fellow Spark running buddies. Like I said, this gives me a chance also to journal each run in case an injury pops up and I have something to go back to and figure out what happened. it is also fun to watch my own progress.

I also blog about running (and other fitness/diet issues) on my Spark People blog. It really helps me to "put it on paper," even if the paper is a few bytes of memory on a random server somewhere. I gain a lot from reading other members' blog entries.

need_a_disney_fix, I'm having the same issue on the under side of my left big toe. I've always had a callus there, but now it's getting tougher and seems to be getting bigger. I've been reluctant to pumice my calluses since I've been running because I figure they're protecting my feet. This one is getting more noticeable, though. I have a pumice foot file I'm going to use tonight, I think.

Hi all. I've been busy so haven't been around much. Had a great weekend. Dh and I went to WI for my very first triathlon. If anyone has ever considered doing one but were intimidated, all I can say is GO FOR IT. It was such a fun event. I did the Danskin sprint tri and it was amazing. Only women athletes of every age, size, and shape. I was intimidated by the swim, but ended up feeling like that was my easiest leg. I have to do a breaststroke because of some balance problems and was not alone. Many do a breaststroke, side stroke, backstroke, .... If you have fear of swimming in the open water, they have swim angels that will swim across the lake next to you even using a noodle if you like. The bike ride and run are laid back with many cycling at a leisurely pace and walking the 5K. I had a blast, and dh loved watching.
I did better than I thought I would with a official finish time of 1:29:52. My transitions stunk, so I will work on that for next year and hopefully shave a couple minutes off my time from transitions alone. I was also really happy with my run as I typically do a 9-10m mile. I did the 5K at around a 8:17 pace. :woohoo:

Anyway, I'm excited to get into my half training now that the tri is over. I still want to continue biking and swimming since I love adding cross training since I get bored just running and want to improve for next summer.
Hope everyone's training is going well.

Just FYI, my shoes fit perfectly fine. I worked shoe sales for nearly 3 years, so I am pretty good at sizing myself. I already use the tying method for anchoring the heel back and down, as I have a narrow heel and a wide toe area. I just have a feeling I will be one of those that will deal with this as my distance increases.

What about the type of socks you are using and keeping your nails short? It can't hurt to get a second opinion from the running store people even though you have so much experience. Running shoes have changed a lot in the last three years. If they think you have the right shoes than so be it. It just perplexes me that so many of you have or are losing toenails. It isn't a good thing at all as once you lose one in adulthood, you are more prone to losing them. I haven't lost a toenail since I was in grade school and that was all because I dropped something on my toe. Maybe the Nike Lunarglide + are just awesome and don't cause toenails to fall off? I haven't even gotten a blister this time around. So odd...

Mine has this little spot that hurts and I think it may be a corn that is forming. No real ailments except this itt bitty issue. Dang!

I wear good shoes, have been fitted, and wear the right socks (coolmax, cushioned, etc.). My feet have never hurt, not in training for 2 half marathons this year, and including a game of ice hockey at least once a week.

I think my lost toenail is actually somewhat due to cutting that nail *too* short.

I have lost that nail on the other foot just from regular shoes and no running, before, though. Weird because that one seems just fine.

Oh well, it wasn't very painful, and still seems to be hanging on for now.

I have known a lot of runners with lost toenails, and my very experienced running group leaders (some have done a marathon in every state, even) seem to think that it's pretty common.

I am on Cloud 9 with my C25K training. I did W6D2 today and it was great. Two days ago i ran 20 min. without stopping for the first time in my life. Crazy.
I'm definitely going to register for the Princess Half and could not be more excited. My sis-in-law is considering doing it with me :)
I just booked Animal Kingdom Lodge on-line and am very excited about that too :)
Once I complete C25K I'm going to do the Run/Walk training plan from Marathoning for Mortals. What a great book!
Good luck to everyone with their training - and toes! LOL.

Sorry I have missed a lost of posts. We have been very busy with the first day of school today for both my girls.
Now I have a ton of work to do.

I am sorry to hear about all the toe problem and thanks for the tips.

Have a great day everyone.

Oh thank you for asking! It went awesome and you can read my blog about it here:

Great run! :cheer2: Love your Blog.

You should also try to run in the rain, if it's not thundering and/or lightening. You never know what conditions will be like on race morning, and it's great to have practice in all types of weather.

My best run ever, was in the rain. It was a gentle rain, and it cooled me down, loved it.

I wear my trusty Garmin Forerunner 305 every time I run. Its the best piece of running equipment (other than shoes) I own. Love it!

Yes, isn't the Garmin 305 the BEST! I LOVE mine!

Congrats! I am on day 1 week 5 tomorrow and a little nervous about the end of the week, but so far so good. It is a fantastic program. Way to go!

Sorry, did not think of running in the rain as a line item. My thoughts were raining cats and dogs and you were stuck in the house.

I actually love running in the rain - even with a little lightning though it has to be a long way a away (longer than maybe a 10 second flash-bang). I still street run but one needs to look out for a few things. Do not step into a puddle that you do not see the bottom of... It may be deeper than expected. Keep a lookout for drivers as they are less likely to look for you.

Wear a billed hat to keep the drops off your face. I wear my oakleys with a lighter lense to keep drops out of my eyes.

Do not wear your head phones on a rain day. You need a few more senses but even more imporatantly.... rain ruins IPods.

If you are stepping into a puddle that will splash expect your training foot to suffer and the lead foot to not get as wet.

You may know but wet pavement (especially just getting wet pavement) will be slick. Look out for oily spots near intersections, just after bumps and where cars park. Also reflective paint on the street is extremely slippery with wet. It was fun listening to everyone during last January's half talking about freezing pavement... they were rinning on the painted lines every time I heard the complaints.)

I love rain running but will more than likely not run a long run in the rain. Used to do it but you will hit a point where feet will start to blister if out too long.

That's what I've been curious about. How would you keep your feet dry during a long rainy race? Any tips/tricks? My feet would be a soggy blistery mess in no time!

I ran in the rain for the first time ever a month ago when I ran the Bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa. This was not just a sprinkle as it was a steady rain all 7 miles. It was awesome. I had my iPod with me but beacuse of the rain I did not use it. Here is a photo of me in that race soaking wet and as you can see I had nothing to protect me from the rain as it was not needed because I don't melt LOL. I had to wring out my skirt during the race because the weight of the rain water was pulling the skirt down. Now I run in rain (and snow) no matter what.
