I'm considering doing the Princess Half Marathon in 2011. I haven't run ever really, except for PE class in high school. My husband and I started the Couch to 5K program last week and I'm on week two. My goal is to be able to at least just walk the Princess. I had a few questions though!

Has anyone else that's had no real experience running been able to finish the race?

Any Type 1 Diabetics out there that are runners that could offer advice? I wear an Animas Ping pump and so far I've had to take it off when I run because my BS drops terribly. The reason I've set the half marathon goal for myself is that we're wanting to start a family and exercising and getting my A1C down is the next step. So the desire to have a baby is my #1 motivation for running!

Anyone run this with their husband? I know I can't run it by myself and my husband has offered to be on a team with me but I didn't want him to feel out of place.

I can't speak to the diabetes, but I can speak to the "new runner" part.

I had no experience running and started my Princess 2010 training in January. I finished in 3:11.

I was in okay shape I guess, playing hockey once a week, although a good 40-50 lbs overweight and 34 yrs old.

However, I trained to walk *fast* and didn't worry too much about the running parts for long runs. My plan was to do two short and 1 long "run" per week. The shorts were where I did some running intervals (started with walk 8, run 1, and up from there), and the longs were almost all walking. I started with a long of 4 miles and went something like 4, 6, 8, 5, 7, 9, 11 then taper, but you could space it out a lot more if you are starting now.

There is absolutely NO shame in walking. :goodvibes

I got in 14 miles yesterday! It was my longest training run ever! I felt great too. I was sore later in the day, but that was after sitting in my car for 2 hours to drive to a friend's house. Next week will be *only* 12 miles!

Congrats on a NEW distance, that's fantastic!:woohoo:

Talk to your healthcare provider about what to do. If your BS is dropping during a run, you may need to either turn down your basal rate for that time period or have a snack before you run. Exercise is a great way to lower blood sugar and get your A1c down!

I am a walker and finished the 2009 Princess Half Marathon in 3'28". I did it alone (no one wanted to play half marathon with me) and had a great time. So pink. So princess. So fun. One of my favorite memories is of standing in the packet pick up line with several women, one of whom regaled us with tales of being picked up by the "I won't finish on time" bus. This was to be her third Disney half marathon, her goal being to walk further (6 miles for the Princess) in each than the previous. I was most inspired, but having seen the jeweled medal I was intent on crossing the finish line. I was elated to finish, and shared camaradie throughout the park that day with other women also unable to leave their medals back at the room. There were women of all shapes, sizes and ages participating. I loved that. I am a somewhat oversized 57 year old looking forward to walking amidst that female presence again in 2011.

:love:Sounds wonderful! Great post!

I have a goal race next weekend! My 5 mile PR is very, very bad, due to the fact that my only other 5 mile race was done on a HOT, sunny day, before I got used to running in the heat or the sun. Hoping to cut about 6 and a half minutes from my time. I have to look up which direction the course is in, though. If it's clockwise through the park, I might be able to cut as much as 7 or 8 minutes.

hey amy - when is the race? it's downtown? can anyone join it? where do you find your info for races in the area?

NYRR Poland Spring 5M. It closed a few weeks ago. :( If you go to nyrr.org, you can see the list of races. They are only $18 for members. They usually cap at 8,500.

Good luck with the Poland Spring race! I found out about it too late to sign up. I AM doing the Kleinerman on 12/5 and the Emerald Nuts NYE run. Excited!!!

nycruns.com usually has a good list of races all over the NYC area (including NJ and CT) - not just NYRR ones.

I'm doing Kleinerman, too, as well as the Race to Deliver on 11/21 and the Ted Corbitt 15k in December. I'm not doing the NYE run, but I'll be right there, anyhow, since we always watch the fireworks in the park at midnight.
I wanted to run, but my boyfriend said that's not a romantic way to spend the New Year. LOL.

thanks! will check it out!

Definitely join NYRR. It's pretty cheap, like $40 or something, and they have WONDERFUL races every other weekend all year long. Much better organized than pretty much anywhere else in the country.

Yep! I just recently joined. They also have a thing where if you're a member by say 1/31/11 and you run in 9 qualifying races and volunteer with/for/at 1 qualifying race in 2011, you get guaranteed entry into the 2012 NYC Marathon! :cool1:

Oh, I forgot to mention that ;-)

Also, volunteering is super fun. I volunteered for the Father's Day race this year, and it was really cool to see all the kids out with their dads.

So where is everyone eating on the night of the race?
I made the ADRs for our group. There will be 6 of us all moms , with only 4 of us staying on site at WL for free dining.
The two extra will join us for our Sat night dinner.
So far we have AK on Fri with Boma Fri night.
MK on Sat with O'hana Sat night.
And for our post race dinnner.....Akushus with the princesses!! I'm so excited even though it's not somewhere I would normally eat with adults. I think it's fitting to dine with princesses after our princess race.

Sounds fun! I'm also staying on property for the free dining. I've booked my ADRs for me and my parents:
Fri - Coral Reef (so excited - never been!)
Sat - LTT (thought I'd show my parents the course through the park) Do you think that is ok for pre-race dinner? I figured I'd eat the turkey and carb up on the side dishes.
Sun - Le Cellier for my post-race celebratory dinner!princess:
Mon - 50's PTC for our day in HS
Tues - Dad's early bday dinner at Biergarten (his request)
