Yep! I just recently joined. They also have a thing where if you're a member by say 1/31/11 and you run in 9 qualifying races and volunteer with/for/at 1 qualifying race in 2011, you get guaranteed entry into the 2012 NYC Marathon! :cool1:

wow! cool!

Oh, I forgot to mention that ;-)

Also, volunteering is super fun. I volunteered for the Father's Day race this year, and it was really cool to see all the kids out with their dads.

i'm going to look into joining. can the races be any 9? like, could someone do 9 5ks and still qualify? not saying i'd do that but just curious. i don't know about a marathon but it sure would be great to try it! maybe i could train for the wdw one in 2012 and if i do that i could do the nyc one at the end of the year....

one can dream, right?

You can do any 9 races. 5k's are hard to come by in NYRR. I think there are only 2. Lots of 4 and 5 milers though, and six half marathons, at least four 10ks.

I'm planning on WDW 2012 being my first marathon, and NYCM being my second.

AllCharleston:

Isn't the Princess the best race? It is just more fun than the other Half Marathons I've done (mainly walking). There is just something magical about all those women doing something like that together that gets to me. I just finished my last Half Marathon before the Princess and can hardly wait! Ladies, just keep on trucking whether that is running or walking.

I have been thinking about subscribing to Women's Running Magazine. Do any of you get this magazine? Would you recommend it? I am trying to find a place locally that sells it so I can buy an issue of it. TIA.

I flipped thru an issue at an EXPO a year or so ago (I think it was one of the first...if not the first issue). It was a lot of ads but that could have diminished quite a bit as ladies have subscribed. It was also geared to the new/beginning runner. If you are an experienced runner, then I don't know if you'd like it as much as say "Runner's World" magazine.

I am a walker and finished the 2009 Princess Half Marathon in 3'28". I did it alone (no one wanted to play half marathon with me) and had a great time. So pink. So princess. So fun. One of my favorite memories is of standing in the packet pick up line with several women, one of whom regaled us with tales of being picked up by the "I won't finish on time" bus. This was to be her third Disney half marathon, her goal being to walk further (6 miles for the Princess) in each than the previous. I was most inspired, but having seen the jeweled medal I was intent on crossing the finish line. I was elated to finish, and shared camaradie throughout the park that day with other women also unable to leave their medals back at the room. There were women of all shapes, sizes and ages participating. I loved that. I am a somewhat oversized 57 year old looking forward to walking amidst that female presence again in 2011.

GREAT Post! Thanks for the reminder of how great my first princess is going to be!

love this . I am going solo and this will be my first half.
I can't wait

I've done a couple of solo races. So much less to worry about that way. You get to focus on the only person that really matters that morning...you!

So are you going to come in for the weekend and do any parks? I'm bringing my mom for her first visit to the World, but otherwise it's just me too.

Yes I do plan on doing the parks. I also met a fabulous person on these boards that is also going solo, so now I have a roommate and someone to park tour and celebrate with :cheer2:

expletive! expletive! expletive!! i took two days off after my 10 miler on saturday. set out for a run with the baby in the jogger today and at about 3/4 mile he started to fuss. i stopped quick to give him his pacifier and started up again. i made it another quarter mile and my foot was KILLING ME. the bottom left part of my left heel was hurting and it was radiating up above my ankle. the ankle didn't hurt, just above it. :headache:

i decided not to press my luck so i started to walk home. while i was still on the maritime campus, one of the guys who works in the cafeteria was like, "hey, aren't you usually running??" i told him my foot hurt. i guess people have been noticing how i'm always there!

the foot doesn't really hurt now but i'm sitting down. i hope it's just a little twist or something. i feel like if it was something worse i'd be in really bad pain. still, i really didn't want to take this many days off.

We clearly share a brain! That's my thinking as well! :)

Here's a quick test-- cup your heel and squeeze both sides together. If that causes a lot of pain, then I suggest seeing a doctor. If not, then it probably just needs a little rest.

I'm 38 years old and tired of being overweight... so about three weeks ago, i decided that being the disney fan that I am, what a great way to lose weight and get in shape - train for the disney princess 1/2 marathon! So most people when I told them, laughed and said "why not try a 5k first???" Well, in 3 weeks, I'm up to 2.9 miles and down 8 pounds.... not to shabby.... Now, my time isn't great as i seem to be around 15.06 - 15.20 min miles - but like i said, it's only 3 weeks in!

Anyway - i'm doing this by myself. I have mixed feelings about that but I do think (knowing me) it's probably a good thing. I know that I would feel crazy guilty if someone that was actual good at doing this went with me and I felt like I was holding them back.

I'm looking for any advice on anything - whether is running tips, where to stay tips, anything! I have NO experience running any distances. I'm 38 and was 190 (and short 5' 1) now i'm 182

Anyway - thanks in advance for any info!

Just be cautious about doing too much too fast. Most training plans and doctors say you should increase your mileage by NO MORE than 1% each week. So if you ran a total of 2.9 miles this week, next week your total should be no more than 3.2 miles next week. Otherwise you're courting all kinds of injuries.

I think you might mean 10%.

Thank you for that advice. I have been trying to slowly increase my time spent on my feet and my mileage. I'm not running hard - trying to do more like a warm up walk to a fast pace then i jog for 2 mins rest for 1 min. Sometimes if i don't feel winded or anything after the 2 mins, i will add a min or two and rest for a minute thirty seconds. Someone also told me at this point, don't worry about my speed and distance so much - just focus on getting use to spending so much time on my feet. Every like 5 - 7 days, i will add 2 minutes to my workout time. I'm working out 5 days a week now for 42 mins plus a 2 minute cool down. Monday & Friday are usually my rest days and Sunday is my longer day (usually when i increase time). The 2.9 was yesterday's mileage - my weekly mileage right now is around 13 - 14 miles? I'm trying to stay around this to just get use to exercise! At 15 weeks before the race is when i'm really focusing hard on time/distance training. I certainly don't want to hurt myself!
