Official 2011 Disneyland Half Thread!

So I was recently talking to one of the girls going on the Disney World Internships the same time as me. She's going as a guest relations intern and has been anxious to get her D pin and plaid vest. So last time we talked I told her they've fashioned the medal after it and she was super excited for it. Although, she doesn't get to run the race so I guess I'll just have to bring it back to Florida with me and show it to her :cool1:

I got the doctor's approval to run again! I haven't run in seven weeks due to a stress fracture in my right foot. I've been on the bike since I was out so I'm looking forward to getting my mileage back up for this race.

Awesome news :thumbsup2. Just make sure you don't increase it too much too quickly and re-injure yourself.

I am signed up for the Vegas race too. Should be fun. I am just getting started on my training for DL. so far so good.

I started this week with training. Even though I just did a 1/2 on the 5th I am still going back to basics with my training so this week is 3 miles every other day with a "long run" of 4 miles on Sunday. I'm really not sure of another way to stay training all year long and I think this will work out ok for me.

Question for those who've run DLR before- Is a car better to have than using the ART shuttles for race transportation?

I'm staying on the ART line (Katella) but usually just walk to and from the park but not really wanting to do that early morning race day.. I've been debating renting a car but not sure if its easier or harder to deal with on race day (I do get free parking at DLR)

Also my hotel is not a "race hotel" with its own ART stop but the 2 neighboring hotels are so I assume its the same as usual ART transportation that we can freely use the stop?

The car is definitely not convenient on race day - although everyone does get free parking regardless. With all the road blocks, etc. the only convenient time for the car is in the morning to drop someone off. I did not stay at a hotel that used the shuttle for the race but honestly could have just walked to the start line and then back to the hotel (or used the hotel shuttle later to get back) and it would have been a lot faster and probably a good post run thing to do. It took us forever to get back to the hotel from the parking garage at DL. It was quite a contrast from the races at WDW! JMHO.

Hi everyone!

I just read through the entire thread and wanted to say HI. I know I am joining the party REALLY LATE but I am registered for the W&D Half (pretty active on that thread) and when I found out about the C2C metal and the Disneyland Half a mere month prior to my WDW race, I decided that I WANT ONE. :)

No, I have not yet registered. Yes, I know it is sold out through RunDisney. Yes, I have talked to the GetTravel guys and they assured me (as of a few weeks ago) that if I book a room with one of their good neighbor hotels, then I can get a registration entry form for the half. Of course its $195 registration fee that includes a park ticket I don't really want, and I HAVE to stay at one of their hotels, but since I would be coming from Oregon that's how I would have done it anyway.

So... its still up in the air whether or not I am going to run the race, but I REALLY WANT TO. I also really want my SO to come, and we've been looking at airfare and have not been able to find anything less than about $600 for us both RT from PDX to LAX, 9/3 - 9/4. I know that's a short trip and kinda tight timing, but I only want one overnight at $104 a night (cheapest rate through gettravel). So that's like $800 for a two day extravaganza just so I can run 13 miles and get that C2C metal. And that doesn't include food. We're trying to see if we can wing it... It wouldn't be such a big deal except we also have a weeks vacation to the coast coming up, and for the W&D Half we are continuing on to a 10 day cruise after (where I am hoping SO proposes... shhh ;) )... so I can only justify so much in play money every year, you know?

I was hoping that I might discover some folks on this thread looking to car pool from Portland, Oregon to Disneyland, but no such luck. Driving might be a tad cheaper gas wise, but its a 17 hour drive.

So those are my random thoughts. I hope I can join you all come September 4th.

Hi to some of you I know from other threads! Hi Jean! :)

A little bit about me: Carey, 30 years, lifestyle change 14 months ago - 225 lb, size 18, junk food junkie couch potato to 145 lb, size 6, healthy foods fitness babe. My heart beats 20 beats less per minute and I average a 6-8 mile run every other day at a 10.5 minute per mile average pace. Always thought I would hate running but I LOVE IT. It is my new passion. I also enjoy gardening, my scottish terriers, and XBox. :) And I work in the film/video production industry.

If you're looking for flights be sure to check Burbank, John Wayne, and Long Beach to see if you can find something cheaper. Also check to see if you can save yourself some money by flying to SFO and switching to Virgin America for the last leg.

Hope to see you there,
Joe Kavanagh

Beware of that GET Travel promise...I would contact one of the charities participating before I would go with them. Sometimes they have people bow out and that spot can be taken by a new runner. So, before you spend all that money for what may end up being an empty promise, it may be better to go the charity route. Another thing...the coast to coast will be offered twice at DL next year with the Tinkerbell Half (Inaugural) and the DL half. So, this medal is not going away anytime soon. I have the coast to coast and will be getting the second one this time around and I can tell you that it is worth the wait! But, not worth paying as much as that Travel Company is pushing. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon so there are plenty of opportunities to get it and once you run one Disney race, you WILL keep coming back. They are addictive!!

Joe - Thanks for the airport suggestions! As of right now it's $600 for two to fly, and I am struggling to justify it. Maybe I will have some better luck with some of these other destinations. Thanks!

Shelby - Good advice. I really want a metal, darn it. :) But you're right that its not going anywhere. The travel company (confirmed with me just today that they still have some spots left), only requires one night at a hotel ($104) and the registration plus park ticket ($195) for a total of $300 in order to run. That part isn't so bad, in my opinion. It's the travel fees to get to California that are killing me. Argh. Well I'll toss it around a little more and make a decision either way.

I was contacted my a fellow DISer about using his Disneyland half registration because he can not longer make it. Anyone have any experience with running under someone else? I am not against it, but realize there would be a hiccup in getting the C2C metal... also my proof of time would be under his name, right? Does anyone know if I can change the name on the registration from him to me? I don't care what the bib says, and I don't REALLY care too much about proof of time because my RunKeeper app will give me the same thing and that's official enough for me. So, thoughts anyone?

I'm not against it either, but if you do run with his bib, you won't be able to get the C2C medal. Everything will be under his name, so when you get to the W&D, you won't be on the list to be eligible for C2C. Your only chance for a C2C is to do both races in your name. Or both races in his name, I suppose. ;)

Which hotel are you staying at on Katella?

If you go on the race website, under the Event Details, there is a transportation link with a map of the hotels that the shuttle is stopping at and the map, so that might help you out a little bit. The thing about the shuttle is that it still doesn't take you to the start line/staging area. You still have to walk through DTD to get to the area. It's not long, about 1/3 of a mile. You could always do a taxi, but that might be long and $$$ w/ the road closures and traffic getting to the parking lot.

You might have a few problems w/ someone else's reg. I don't think you can transfer registrations, so he would have to still pick it up w/ his id. That leads to the C2C problem, when you do the 2 races, you name is on the list and you get a bracelet at the 2nd race which is predicated on your name being on the 1st's results list. So if he can't transfer and you run under his name, you wouldn't have an official time for W & D, the results would be under his.

I knew training in the summer heat was going to be hard, but good grief, it's downright BRUTAL...and it's only just begun! I've been reading some of the heat related articles from Runner's World found here and thought I would share. It's good to know what can happen if you push too hard in these temps and I hope everyone will read to learn some of the signs that you need to back off. I know I've already felt a couple of them myself on a couple of runs that I've had in the last week and that's scary!

Hi all

For those still looking for Airfare, Southwest is having a sale in honor of their 40th anniversary. I was able to rebook my flights (and get the return flight I want) from Columbus to LAX for 268 round trip. So I not have flight vouchers to use later.

If anyone didn't register for the half, there's this costlier option to still get a bib. Scroll down for the info.

In previous years, when you pick up your bib at the expo, if you are Coast to Coast, they put a bracelet on your wrist, which identifies you at the finish line for the extra medal.

Here's the comparison on the 2011 DL Half medal, and the Hostess Cast Member badge. Very similar.

Now I'm even more excited for the Disneyland Half Marathon because it's going to be my first trip home to Cali since my move to Florida! I can't wait to run in the non-humid air... although I don't miss the smog so much.

They sent out an email about the race today. It had info on the Chear Squad and codes if you want to go to an Angels Game for discounted tix. If anyone didn't get the email and wants it, pm me and I can send it to you. It also said that the next email will have info about our waivers, so I'm guessing towards the end of July, 1st week of August. It's sllloooowwwly getting closer!! :mickeyjum:mickeyjum

I got the E-mail yesterday. I noticed the Angles tickets when I purchased my Disneyland tickets. They also included a link to the race program.

I was looking at the race program and it mentions they are using B-Tags. So anyone know what that is? Is it attached to your bib and you just leave it there as opposed to D-Tags you remove and put on your shoe? Or is it a misprint? I've never heard of B-Tags before. Last race I did was Surf City 1/2 and they used D-Tags. :confused3

Yes B-tags are attached and stay on the bib. I've used 2 styles of tag's on bibs. The one had 2 straight chips on either side of the bib. The other had a square section on the corner of the bib that was the chip.
