Official 2010 College Football Discussion Thread

I would submit that Tennessee's situation now, and Auburn's back then, is exactly the same as Alabama's with respect to Penn State. What Kiffin did to UT and baby Bowden did to AU put those programs in as bad or worse a situation.

It's OK to admit your program ran from a game, Ed. It just makes you human.

I can't fault Tennessee for backing out of tough out of conference games. The way things work currently, there is nothing to gain and everything to lose for the major schools playing tough opponents out of conference.

I don't know a lot about what Tennessee's team looks like this year. But, that school has a proud tradition. I am concerned about Florida having to play them at Tennessee this year. If the fans show up, and I think they will, this will be a very tough game for the Gators.

Hey TCD, do we know what your team is?

Yes.

I said so in the very first post above.

I'm an obnoxious Gator Fan.

Although I guess the obnoxious part is redundant.

Here's a couple of photos from my campsite at the Fort last Thanksgiving ('09) -

I bleed Orange and Blue.

But, I am married to a 'Nole. And my oldest DD is a 'Nole. And all of my in-laws are 'Noles. I end up at a lot of FSU games. And don't tell anybody, but I root for the 'Noles. Except for one game every year.

This is OUR year! Really, I mean that this time! Although I still miss the Nutt...
GO HOGS!!!! :cheer2::cheer2:

I guess I have to throw in a Go Bucks too since DH coached there. But I'm only a fan "on paper"... :rotfl:

Another SEC fan!

Who are the "Bucks"? Are you talking about Ohio State? Or some other team? Does your DH still coach? Where?

As long as I'm posting, I will mention that we are now less than a week away from the start of the 2010 college football season!

If you want to watch some good football, check out ESPN tonight.

At 7 pm.

They are broadcasting a High School game.

Yes, a High School game.

On ESPN.

It is from Florida.

Plant v. Manatee.

Plant has this kid named James Wilder, Jr. He just made a big announcement committing to FSU. His dad played in the NFL. This kid is something else. Plant is ranked #1 in the nation by some of the so-called experts.

Here's one of many YouTube videos you can see of this Wilder kid in action:

A sports blog on the Orlando Sentinel website is reporting that Lee Corso has predicted that Florida and Nebraska will play for the BCS National Championship this year.

An excerpt:

ESPN analyst Lee Corso delivered a keynote speech to a corporate company recently at the ESPN Grille, located on the Wide World of Sports property, about his life and job. During the speech, Corso gave his BCS national championship game prediction– Florida Gators (No. 4, Associated Press) vs. Nebraska (No. 8).

Here's a link to the blog:

Do these sports announcers have the best jobs in the world, or what?

I'm a closet Gator fan. I have their helmet too.

Our son that graduated from FSU is an actor and he did a commercial with Lee Corso. He being a big sports fan got to spend some time with him.

I spent some time with Corso too. I made sure I blew my piccolo nice and loud in his ear when I marched past him. It was his last time he was allowed on our practice field. He has had nothing nice to say about Auburn since Pat Dye kicked his sorry rear out.

I'm excited about Wilder. I think he will be a definite factor at the college level. He is strong, powerful back. Manatee also has a stud at RB Mike Blakely who I believe has UF as one of his top 3 schools. He looks pretty impressive tonight.

Gotta love when High School football is broadcast in HD!

CWMajors,

Thanks for providing a teachable moment.

Bama is playing Penn State after delaying it for a few years. But lo and behold, per the Auburn Athletic website your Mighty Tigers have not played FSU since 1990. :scared1: It looks like Auburn is scared of FSU. When was that game rescheduled exactly? When was it played in the last 20 years? Either you are wrong or the Auburn Athletic Department website is wrong. Hmmmm.....

Of course, if you can provide us and your Athletic Department with the link of the game they missed, we would all appreciate it. What were the stats? Who got injured? What was the final outcome? The drama must have been paralyzing for no record of the game to exist. Oh the Humanity! It mustof been a he11 of a game. :rotfl2:

Having set the record straight, my original comment meant that I thought Tennessee was more like the University of Alabama than the University of Auburn. I like Tennessee as a program when they're not playing Alabama. I'm disappointed in Mike Hamilton as a leader. Anybody can be a passionate fan and support their program but if you have nothing, no facts or supporting information, to back you up, then you can be held accountable. Dooley is playing the hand that he's been dealt.

Can't wait for kickoff!

Bama ED

PS-Oh, BTW, having survived the Perkins-Curry-Stallings-DuBose-Price-Franchione-Shula eras at Alabama, not only am I human, I have been humbled. So I'm enjoying this run of Alabama at the top but I have no illusions that it will last forever. But I am glad to see Alabama back sniffing around the top of the SEC along with teams like Florida.

Ed, please pass along whatever you are smokin'. It really has to be some pretty good weed.:cool2:

Or there could be a third option: I'm right, and you're comparing apples to oranges.

Let's review, folks. According to BamaEd:

  • 'Bama postponed a game against Penn State because their team stank out loud. COMPLETELY FINE.
  • Tennessee cancelled a game against North Carolina because Lane Kiffin left their program a mess. COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDABLE.
  • Auburn cancelled a game against FSU because the allure of the game (Papa Bowden v. Baby Bowden) had been lost(and, admittedly, the team was in shambles after Terry forgot to recruit for a couple of years). THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE I SAY! AUBURN IS SCARED!

Someone is not applying the same logic in all three situations here, and it ain't me. Auburn scared? Auburn has played USC, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Virginia, and South Florida in out-of-conference games in just the recent past, and this year we pick up a home-and-home against Clemson. I'd stack up our OOC schedule against the likes of Alabama and Florida any day.

Having set the record straight, my original comment meant that I thought Tennessee was more like the University of Alabama than the University of Auburn.

emoteng101.gif
Auburn University. And let's be clear: What you're saying is it's perfectly OK to cancel or reschedule games as long as you're not Auburn. Which is a perfectly fine opinion for you to have- actually, it's exactly what I'd expect you to say. Just don't try to dress that opinion up as "reasonable."

Can't wait for kickoff!

Finally, we can agree on something.

It's been too long since football season ended. Thursday night can't get here fast enough.

TCD

Yes, I am an SEC fan, but not by choice. I'm actually a die-hard SWC fan, but since it doesn't exist anymore... ;)

Yes, Ohio State Buckeyes. DD already knows how to say "Go Bucks" and "Soooie!" and she knows which mascot each one goes with! :thumbsup2

DH doesn't coach anymore, he left Ohio State and then coached in the NFL a while. He has been a "regular person" since 2001.

He has a lot of cool stories to tell, though.

If Ed and Chris are both at the fort at the same time I'll book a cabin just to see the debate lol.

See? Told ya you wouldn't find the results of that Auburn - FSU game. :rotfl2:

Just got back from seeing the Nick Saban documentary movie "Game Changer". Packed house as you would guess and it was like throwing red meat to the lions. It was interesting to hear Saban describe himself what "The Process" is and how it came about; why he chose to go to LSU; his time with the Browns under Billechek <sp?>; and to see his coaching tree growing. Fisher at FSU, Pellini at Nebraska, Dooley at Tennessee, and possibly Will Muschamp to LSU and Kirby Smart to Georgia in the future.

Anyone know what is going on with the South and North Carolina teams? Investigations, suspensions, we'll see if they hold out folks for their first games. I was favoring NC against LSU in their opener but if NC has to hold players out then things might swing in The Hat's favor.

One more week to go! :cheer2:

Bama ED

SC did suspend a few plays a few weeks ago. Spurrier did make a hand full of players move from a hotel in Columbia they were staying in. The hotel was being investigated by the NCAA.

Sorry, Corso....the Huskers doomed from the get-go. Their first game is against the Mighty WKU Hilltoppers!
And the Toppers are gonna shock the World...from Worst to First!!!!

Wow!

There is some good discussion going on here.

Can't wait until this year's Iron Bowl.

But the good news is that it is finally GAME WEEK!

I don't know what has gotten into the water over at the four letter network, but here's some good reading if you have some spare time between now and Thursday night:

ESPN Predictions

Here you will find the predictions of twelve of ESPN's "experts."

Seven of them have Alabama repeating as National Champions.

One of them picks Florida.

My favorite is the genius who picks Boise State to defeat Alabama in the National Championship Game.

Yeah, right.

All of them pick Alabama to win the SEC West.

11 of them pick Florida to win the SEC East. One picked Georgia.

Can you believe these folks get paid to do this?

TCD

Can you believe these folks get paid to do this?
It's like weather forecasting. Look at the predictions for the path of Hurricane Earl. It may hit the Carolinas, or anywhere along the coast up to Mass, or maybe hit Newfoundland, or maybe just veer east out to sea. :confused3

It's the same with these "experts" predicting the football season. You may as well use a dartboard to pick 'em, or have a monkey do it.

I'm with Dave, (he beat me to the post) isn't lovely that ESPN "analysts" (and I do use that term loosely) and weather forecasters get PAID to guess and no one ever gets mad at them when they are wrong? I mean, in the past couple of days, the forecast for hurricane Earl has switched and moved all over the place and no one complains. ESPN analysts run their mouths all over the place about who will win this and who will win that and when they are mostly wrong, no one ever complains, everyone still gets paid. Man, I wish that would happen in every profession! That would be cool!;)
