There is someone looking out for him, that's all I can say. And thank goodness he has his stroke count down so well. The other guy was a little off and glided in, where Phelps hit the wall with his last stroke...that's how he pulled it out.

If it's like the individual apparatus events, then each country can only have 2 gymnasts compete. I might be wrong, but I'd think the all-around would be the same way. Also, I really don't know who else from the US team could've done it...Bridget Sloan only did vault in the team competition, Sam Peszek and Chellsie Memmel are both injured, and Alicia Sacramone, well, I guess she could've but after her mistakes in the team competition I doubt she'd have qualified.

Yes, only two are allowed from each country in the apparatus events. As for the third American, before the Olympics began, there was some speculation that Chellsie Memmel might have been able to take a spot away from either Shawn or Nastia in the all-around finals b/c she was performing so well. However, Chellsie broke her ankle before the Games began, so she wasn't able to compete in all the events in the team qualifying, so there was no way she could make the all-around.

I'm in shock, even in the slo-mo it didnt look like he won.

it was too close to call ...they said one onehundreth of a second...I coundt tell who won ...I thought it was a tie.

yes the other nightI gold I silver and 2 bronze medals were awarded in one of the swimming races...I dont remember which or to whom

Yes, there can be ties in swimming

In prelims - if a tie - the 2 swimmers that tie have what they call a swim off - where they have to swim their race again

In finals - if 2 swimmers tie - they are both awarded the same award

Torres swam a semi this morning (their tonight). I don't know when the final is--probably tomorrow. It is the 50M freestyle.

Who's goning to watch the swimming finals tonight at primetime? Phelps is going for his 8th Gold metal in 2008.... can he do it? Last night was too close with no rest between swims...I hope he is well rested for tonights swim

I hope he can get it, but in the relays, he only has so much control...needless to say I'll be watching.
