There is someone looking out for him, that's all I can say. And thank goodness he has his stroke count down so well. The other guy was a little off and glided in, where Phelps hit the wall with his last stroke...that's how he pulled it out.
If it's like the individual apparatus events, then each country can only have 2 gymnasts compete. I might be wrong, but I'd think the all-around would be the same way. Also, I really don't know who else from the US team could've done it...Bridget Sloan only did vault in the team competition, Sam Peszek and Chellsie Memmel are both injured, and Alicia Sacramone, well, I guess she could've but after her mistakes in the team competition I doubt she'd have qualified.
Yes, only two are allowed from each country in the apparatus events. As for the third American, before the Olympics began, there was some speculation that Chellsie Memmel might have been able to take a spot away from either Shawn or Nastia in the all-around finals b/c she was performing so well. However, Chellsie broke her ankle before the Games began, so she wasn't able to compete in all the events in the team qualifying, so there was no way she could make the all-around.
