Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I have no one that rally thrills me like last year. I had Clay picked from his very first audition. Leah reminds me of last years goat girl pick by Simon! Not so much her voice, but the whole "why did she get picked?" BUT my girls like Leah, they think she sings good. I really thought that Suzy was the better singer out of the group. Out of this group of 12, I like Diana and Amy and John S, but I'll give my first vote to John Stevens because he is a local guy (and I like his voice) Not sure how far he'll go, but it is making things interesting around here.

Interesting, I just finished watching the fast forwarded version and JPL is singing. I still don't get it, he bugs me. And I am so not happy to see the football player again, when he came out did he shoot an attitude look at Simon???

I was so happy for George though, I love him, way to go Simon!!!

Leah, she was horrible last night, ugh.

Last night we went to my children's HS band and choir winter concert. They showcased a few solo's from their solo contest earlier in the month. We were blown away with the talent that some of the HS's at our school had. All of the solo's stayed in tune and some were outstanding.

Then we went home just in time to hear Leah sing. I said to my DH, we just got back from a local HS choir concert and the girls we heard sing were so much better than this girl that AI is picking as one of the best in the country.

I mean when you are hearing better singers at your local HS, I think that something is missing from AI!

Leah :scratchin 'nuf said.

My daughter and I were so :earseek: when it was announced that Jon Peter made it AND was the audience selection! WOW! He entertained us, made us laugh--but the best of that group according to our votes? Go figure that one.

I still can't believe that Susy wasn't selected by anyone. Do you suppose she was discriminated against because of her outward appearance? She's not the most attractive girl, but she can sing and I don't think that her lack of "personality" and "good looks" should have kept her out. She's way better than Leah. . .oh yeah, I wasn't goin' there. ;)

George was good last night and I still like Jennifer despite her theatrical mannerisms. Remember everyone, Clay was accused of the same "theatrical" presentation--didn't hurt him any! :hyper:

Interesting choices. JP will keep the humour going, I like that. the show was going to be a real drag without someone like him. I wonder what the judges are thinking now that George has made it to the final twelve and he wasn't originally even in the final 32. Sure makes me wonder about the rest of their choices. Why were they so out to lunch this time? They seemed to pass over a lot of talent. Were they looking for some different criteria?

I'm glad that the ball is finally rolling and we can get to know some of these contestants better.

John Peter....he reminds me of Beck the singer.:p He is new and quirky I like that.:o Also, I Love George Huff, he does have talent.;) So, what did you all think of RUUUBENN! I thought he was OK, but not as good as last year. Not too fond of the Girls this year, and I ADORE Matthew, not the good looking one, but the one that CAN sing!:teeth:

I definitely think Matt sould be picked up by a soap!

Leah - yeech.

Jon Paul - I totally don't get it, he looks like a short Alfred E. Newman and he can't sing. Plus, he was in SERIOUS need of a shampoo and shower last night!

Jennifer - needs a fashion makeover, but I really like her voice.

George - seems like a likable guy, hope he does well.

I agree with the high school comparison. Most of the finalists seem like good high school or community theatre level singers. Does anyone know what the age cutoff is? The oldest seems to be 23, maybe they'd do better if they had a few older contestants.

I'm glad JPL got picked. He has a good voice and is quirky. I agree with the Beck analogy. The Elvis song was not a good choice for him to sing but I think once he finds his footing as far as musical choices go, he'll do great!

I am in shock that Leah got picked and Suzy didn't. I thought for sure when the judges didn't pick her that she must have been America's choice.

That's what I get for not voting...Leah:crazy2:

I was actually cringing when I heard the first few bars from Leah last night. I was embarassed for her. I can't imagine what Paula was thinking when she picked her.

I have come to the conclusion that being a good singer is only part of what they are looking for. They keep talking about "star" quality, and who does or doesn't have it. Clearly, they did not pick people on pure talent. They pick on some people's appearances, and not others who have the same flaws. Then they tell someone they are the best singer, but then let them go. I am totally confused as to exactly what they were looking for. The only good thing is that it is now out of the judges hands, and into the hands of America. Maybe now it will become more fair.

I agree with Simon's comments about some of them being good but forgetable. Some of the girls were better than others but to me sounded all the same.

I liked the Pink haired girl comment about not being able to finish her food, she' s not mad just hungry:D I thought that was cute.

I think I was spoiled by last year, especially since I just saw Clay in concert this week. INCREDIBLE.

I agree with RedMic about JPL needing a visit with soap and water. After first I thought he just got that sweaty singing, but he really looked like he hadn't washed his hair for a few days! Yuck! I think several of them would do well to have a visit with a stylist (clothes and hair). Jennifer has a pretty voice, but her clothing selections are consistently HORRID!! ...................P

I dont' like Leah and she's pretty much the equivalent of Carmen last year. They're both bad, no one seems to like them, and the only reason they made it is because of judges picks. I really hope Leah is the first to go, and that would make sense since I really don't know anyone that likes her! But with Carmen last year, no one seemed to like her, yet she stayed in the competition longer than half the people!

:duck: Ok, I am probably going to get it from everyone, but I just don't see what you guys see in Clay. :crazy2: I never thought he was that great, but then again, I am not exactly in to Pop music. My husband is and he can't stand him either.

Even though I don't like pop music, I love watching AI. I am disaapointed with Paula picking Leah. I can't stand her or her mother! My Ds was so excited that JPL was picked. My whole family was very surprised. I like him, but don't know if he has what it takes.

 Valerie....it's okay if you don't like Clay...just means more of him for the rest of us :teeth:

Okay...re: Ruben's performance...I listened to the first bar or two...then turned the channel...I just don't like his style of singing.

I agree that Amy and Latoya will probably be the top two this year. Amy is by far my favorite of the whole group. Latoya, Fantasia, and John Stevens follow behind her.

Good, you guys can have him ;)

I love the way Ruben sings, I didn't like the song, but I think he has a great voice.

I LOVED Clay last year, and by the Sales of his CD...it speaks for itself.:o I believe it out sold Ruben's.:o As far as JP, he probably DID shower, they just don't know WHAT to do with his hair yet....remember Clay looked :crazy2: at first, and they gave him contacts and new hair style. They will do the same to JP I hope.:o As far as John Stevens.....

I was shocked John Peter made it through, but I have to admit....I think he was the most enjoyable to watch out of the whole bunch. Maybe America picked him because we got to know him so much better that the others. Remember, they did show a lot more of him in the previous shows. That was when he was so fondly nicknamed "Pen Boy". I found myself rooting for him even before I knew he could(?) sing. Some of the contestants were more memorable to us and he was one of them. I hope he makes it far, because I think we need him to keep us entertained this season! Leah can go, but let's keep JP! (At least for a while!)

I wish they could bring Clay back this year. Can you imagine a "battle of the nerds" with Clay and JP? No competition there, though. Clay would win hands down.

It will be interesting to watch how clothing, hair, make-up and singing changes. Remember Kimberly (not Kim C.) from last year? Her hair changed. Maybe Jennifer's hair, makeup and clothing will look different in a couple of weeks.

I am liking George more and more. He did a great job last night! I hope that the stress doesn't get to him too much. He shows so much joy in his singing and movements. He's such a pleasure to watch.

I couldn't believe that Leah was picked over Suzi. There must be something there that we don't see.

And I think that Lisa and Marque got a raw deal. They are much better than a couple of them that were picked to sing.

With George advancing, I imagine that Donnie - who was replaced by George - is suffering! Imagine being replaced in the competition because of a stupid mistake, only to have your replacement go on!

Jon Peter was a total surprise as America's choice! I love Jennifer's voice (was she really employed by DCL?)
