Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

Was anyone else surprised that Tiara was chosen for the wild card round? I know Simon said he based that on her past performance but I think she's terrible.

I wasn't surprised at all, just based on the judges comments Tues. night. I couldn't believe Randy and Paula saying how great she was. One of the top two in the whole competition????? I kept thinking they must have heard a different performance than the rest of us; I thought she was horrible. I don't even remember her from past performances, but I'm guessing that even their comments Tues. night were based on that.

Did anyone think it was funny how Randy and Paula changed their tunes (about their predictions) last night? I mean, they were all for Jasmine, Tiara and George, and then they stuck in John S. last night. I think they went back and listened to the tape and said, "What were we thinking?" Which just goes to show, what the judges hear in the studio and what we hear on TV are two different things.

I don't think Simon had any other choice by the time it came for him to choose. The other performers just weren't good.

My dd, 10, was watching with me. At the end of the show, while Jasmine was singing, she noticed Paula and Simon, sitting there, arms around each other. She asked why that was since they don't like each other. Had to tell her that it was all an act. Just to keep the audience interested. She said..'Well, that's pretty stupid." From the mouths of babes!!

Yes he did.. he is one of the wildcards.... John and Jasmine are definitely in... George is one of the 12 wildcards who will perform next week... 2 more of them will go through to the final.... I like George also.. but was disappointed in his last performance... he was pushing too much.. like alot of the round 4 contestants... all nerves... can't wait till next week

Kathy

Don't four go through to the final? George may be one of these but he isn't in the top twelve yet! I'm not sure how I feel about him. He has yet to totally win me over. He has such a sweet, humble disposition though, it is hard not to like his personality!

Nope, George did not make it to the top twelve. It was John and Jasmine.

He was right on, because he named the top three.

Paula and Randy didn't change their vote for John until they already knew who the top 3 for the night were. Out of the 3 I think they knew John would get through. I was surprised he was the highest vote getter for the night though! John is a local boy and I work with kids that go to school with him..they must be pretty excited today!

Btw, when Simon said he was going to make his pick based on past performances, I was soooo afraid he was going to pick Lisa. Thank goodness the man has some sense.

Was anyone else surprised Scooter Girl didn't get pulled back in for the wildcard show? I really had expected to see her again.

Did they pick 3 form each of the previous 4 weeks?

I didn't know that the wild cards are picked 3 from each week. I just assumed they would pick the top 12 overall. It certainly would be more fair that way. Week one had the best singers overall, and a higher percentage of them should be going to the wildcard round. Oh well.

In any case, I think John is adorable and sings well, but honestly, I don't see the "star" quality they are always talking about. He doesn't have much of a personality and rarely smiles. I'm still shocked that Simon likes him. And yet George, who I thought had LOTS of personality, was told he wasn't a good performer. I really am totally confused about exactly what the judges are looking for. I do think they are trying to get more guys in the top 12 to make it look more balanced though.

I am glad that Jasmine made it through though. I hope she does well.

I was really surprised that John was the top vote getter last night! Yeah I agree he's cute and has charm, but once they start singing themes, I think he's gonna sink fast. I must say both he and Jasmine say way better last night, than on Tuesday.

Yes, 4 will go through from the Wild Card, not 2. I am not sure who I think they'll be, as there aren't that many good ones to choose from.

We noticed the camera work last night too, what the heck was up with that??

How does the voting for the wildcard work? Does America vote for all four or do the judges get a say?

From what I understand, each judge chooses one person, and the 4th is voted in by America. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

I heard Ryan say that only 8 will get to perform. I guess that judges will choose which eight and then those will perform live next week.

Actually, this is just what they did. There are 4 wildcards from group 1, only 1 from group 2, 4 from group 3 and 3 from group 4.
I pretty much agree with the wildcard picks, but I am surprised they didn't bring back Scooter girl or Mr. Arrogance; both of them were better than a couple of the wildcards, IMHO.

I was sad that Brianna wasn't chosen for the wild card show.

Simon has mentioned on a couple over the last few weeks that even though their performance may not have been the best, he likes them for how different sounding they are.

It will be interesting to see which ones the judges pick to move on.

Last season I did not miss a minute of AI but this year I can't get into it. There are some very good singers, they didn't hook me. People here and on another board like George--I don't care for him. Too bad he can't transfer some of his energy to Red, that kid looks as though his battery is running down. There seem to be alot of younger contestants this year. I also think that the army girl got robbed, she's cute, perky and she has a nice personality and a good voice.

I wonder if the kids get paid for performing on the show.

MrsMud, thanks for clarifying that. :D

I just wonder why they chose to pick three people from week 4 then. It almost seemed like Simon only picked Tiara because she was the lesser of the remaining evils.

I agree, but he reminds me of Harry Connick Jr.. I don't see him as an "American Idol" but I hope he now gets a contract in his niche. So, I think it's a great thing that he went thru, I don't think he will make it all that far, but I think this will get him the attention that he deserves from the right people.

Having seen Clay live last night, I can now really understand what star power is about. Clay is not only talented, but exudes charisma. I don't see that from any of the male contestants and I'm not too sure about the female contestants either.

Now, I thought that Clay was a doofus the first few times he sang. (the early Idol shows) His singing has always been great, to me, & his personality started to shine through eventually. Even Reuben seemed less warm than I think the Idol needs to be. I think we need to let some of these kids get a little bit comfortable. Sure, they'll be under more stress in the coming weeks, but they have to show that they can handle it now. (or they'll be a "mess" on a concert tour!)
