offering your seat up on the bus???

This may be a bit OT- but i does have to do with transportation-- i just cant believe when the bus is full and there is a "gentleman" sitting down that he will not offer his seat to a lady!

there is NO WAY my husband would EVER sit while a woman is standing. even myself- if i have a seat and someone comes on with a child, or someone that is a bit older- i will get up without hesitation--

i was there in december and there was a man maybe 30ish- nice looking (not that that has anything to do with it! but just want you to have a nice picture in your mind! ) that would not offer his seat to anyone and the bus was PACKED! there were plenty of women standing.

just a big thank you to all you MEN who WILL get up to offer a lady a seat!

ANY able bodied person, male or female, on public transportation, should offer a seat to someone who is clearly disabled or elderly. Personally, as a woman with no physical problems, I would not take a seat offered by a man, although I would, of course, thank him.

Just a warning, last time this topic came up the discussion got very heated. Many folks have hidden disabilities and may need the seat although they appear able-bodied.

I'm sorry, but I am "only" 50 but have battled arthritis in my left knee for a few years now, and my right knee is starting down that road. I rarely use an ACV in the parks, but sometimes by the time we are on our way back to the resort I can be in severe pain. I'm sorry but, there are plenty of women who can stand when I can not.

Sure- i would thank him also, however, there are some that dont even make the attempt to offer!

sometimes i will take them up on the offer- i am a bit short and if i have to reach up to grab the railing up top- i almost end up on the persons lap that i am in front of or next to!

if i can hold onto the "pole" while standing up- i do much better- just get those quads working while trying to balance yourself-- sometimes those bus drivers drive crazy!

My dh is in your situation and he's only 48!!! His ortho surgeon is trying to hold off that knee replacement until the 50's!!! Dh will get up if a lady gets on the bus and has a baby in her arms, or if an elderly person comes along. But, since standing on a swaying bus is incredibly hard on his knee, he has to sit. But he will have our 12 y/o dd sit on his lap in order to free up a seat.
My favorites are those who board with the strollers and then fold up the stroller and put it on a seat beside them!!!
Unfortunatly, sometimes it's hard to tell when someone really needs a seat. So, if you see someone sitting, who in your opinion shouldn't be sitting, remember that some disabilities aren't obvious. An inner ear problem wouldn't be easily seen, but could be horrific if that person had to stand on a moving bus!!!!

ok- forget the topic- next time a gentleman does not offer up his seat i will take into consideration that he may not be able to offer it up- actually never thought of that- but i appreciate you enlightening me.

Exactly! My DH will offer his seat to an elderly person (man or women), or a person holding a child, or a small child. He doesn't automatically offer his seat to a female--neither of us see the need for him to stand while a woman sits. Ya'll want equal rights--you've got them LOL!

In the end, there are reasonable people who vehemently disagree with each other on this, so I believe it is best to respect each other: Do what you believe is correct, and don't judge others badly for doing what they believe is correct.

I'm 25, why would a man give me his seat? It would be nice, but it might almost make me feel uncomfortable... Although I know this is chivalry (forgive my spelling), I feel like I am perfectly capable of standing. It would be a nice gesture, but I would prefer them to give the seat to an older lady or gentleman, or just enjoy it themselves after a long day on their feet. I think the first come, first serve makes sense. I may feel differently if I develop arthritis or some other disability in years to come, but then I may just wait for the next bus.

The thing that bothers me, why do people think their packages need their own seat? I notice this all the time, especially at the airports and at the Marketplace. People are standing around looking for a seat, while others give their packages and bags their very own seat.

I don't think you would fold up the stroller and leave it in the aisle, because people would not be able to walk by. It's been several years since we've been (and we've never been w/ a child) so I cannot recall what people normally do w/ their strollers, but I had assumed that you fold them up and slide them into the seat space beside you? But if there's a better way, please let me know!

This is why I take a taxi when I am leaving the park to go back to my resort ,especially after watching the fireworks. Everyone who has waited in line for their resort bus deserves to sit down IMO and if the bus is too crowded and you know that you will have to stand then wait for the next bus so you can get a seat.

Your stroller doesn't need the seat. If you get two seats put the stroller in front of your legs so it doesn't block the aisle or impinge on anyone elses's leg space. Otherwise, let one parent sit with the kid(s) and the other should stand and hold the stroller.

LIke I said, I agree that ANYONE who isn't disabled or holding a young child should offer a seat to someone elderly or very young or holding a young child. But I don't think ANYONE should feel that they have to offer a seat to anyone their age or younger, unless that person is disabled or carrying a young child. And I feel it's ruder of someone to feel entitled to a seat than it is for someone else to not offer it--except in the case of elderly, disabled, or holding a young child of course.)

My dh was disgusted by the number of men sitting and not offering their seats to women. I thought that he was going to blow his top when a couple and their 3 teenage boys stayed in their seats while a woman alone with her baby stood, held the baby and her stroller. He finally gave me our 2 year old(he was standing and holding), I sat and held her and our stroller and squeezed my 7 year old as close to me as I could so the lady could squeeze in while he held her stroller. BUT.......... Jerks are jerks even in the happiest place on earth. I told him to let it go and just pay extra attention when you see someone being nice! Maybe I try, but I think I see that more often ! That is why we love it there!
