We are in the process of purchasing a DVC contract and hope to have it finalized by mid August. Will this be enough time to book a trip for the beginning of October? Thanks

Sorry, you probably won't get a DVC points reservation for October in mid-August. They are pretty much booked up already. Save the points for next October if you really want to go in October.
Agreed, I think it will be pretty hard to get something. Now you might be able to find a room at one resort one day, a room at a different resort another day and so on and so on. Are you willing to move around?
I just booked a trip from October 2-9 after having just closed on BLT last week. I was pleasantly surprised to find SSR available for the entire week. We decided to do a split stay at AKV that had 4 days available. I only asked about studios but besides those 2 resorts, there wasn't much else left. Good luck!

Lucky you! When I booked our October 2-5 trip, SSR was the only thing available for a studio. I would've much rather had AKV, our home resort, but I took what I could get. I'm still hoping one of our waitlists comes through, though.

I assume the OP is buying resale. I've never heard of pulling strings to get a reservation on a resale. If you book direct from Disney, they can sometimes pull inventory from the points that DVC owns.
But even if the members they are buying from call about availability, by the time the contract closes, it will be different so the information will really be of no use.
