2 years ago, I could have never seen myself running in a 5k, let alone a half marathon. In 2010, DD and I completed 12 races (5k's and 10k's). We celebrated that accomplishment by running the WDW half marathon in Jan 2011. We are signed up for 3 more half marathons...
Disneyland 9/4/11, WDW Wine & Dine 10/1/11, and WDW half marathon 1/7/12.
DH and I started this journey together because my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 11/08. One of thew biggest risk factors for ovarian cancer is obeseity. Since then, I have lost 50#, with another 35 to go. I continue this journey after losing both of my parents in 2010 (Mom, age 62, 6/25/10, and Dad, age 67, 11/9/10). They were young...I am all about reducing my risk factors! The strange thing is my mom's parents are still living, and so is my dad's mom...just lost my 1st grandarent 4 years ago.
I am training again for the DL half marathon. If you haven't checked out the Run Disney website yet, I encourage you to do so. Jeff Galloway, the official trainer for Run Disney, has some great programs and training plans for free on the site. I use his run/walk/run method, and finished my very 1st half marathon WDW 1/2011, with a time of 3:19:07. My goal is to beat that time for Disneyland! I had barely any training in for my 1st half as I had been my dad's caregiver, and had no time or mental energy to train. My longest run all year last year was only 6.2 miles. The 2 months before the half, my longest outing was only 3 miles. I spoke to Jeff at the expo, and he suggested to run my first 3-4 miles at a 20:40 interval. I ended up running the entire distance that way, and finished with a smile, standing upright, and wanting to do another one. Jeff Galloway has some great books out there too...I would suggest picking up his 5k book to start. It is a great motivator, plus gives you training, some nutrition, and some great mental tips. His training plans can take a beginning runner from couch to a half marathon in 18 weeks...quicker if you are already running.
My motto is...I may be slow, but I finish the race, It's better to be slow, than to never start at all, & just put one froot in front of the other!
DD has even done 2 5k's with us, a watermelon run last year on July 4th-and the heat was horrible, and
Castaway Cay.
Hope to see you out there for the Castaway Cay 5k, and running around the Dream
Stephanie
