Karen, how do you manage Ellis with the nuts on the boat? I was saying a bout his situation and Virgin etc at work and friends were so amazed at how careful you have to be, it started me wondering about the boat. Are nuts banded there?
Hi Lindy, accoding to quite a few dissers, the ship is well prepared for allergies. Even in the clubs apparantly they wont let anyone eat nut products during lunch etc if there is a child with an allergy. I'll obviously have to check it all out myself to satisfy my worries, but they sound well prepared. The head waiter apparantly discusses the menu with you each night and advises what is suitable etc. It does restrict his choice greatly but better to be safe than sorry.
They do sell nuts onboard and for room service etc. We just have to avoid places such as bars where they are in small dishes on the bar etc and people eat a few then touch the countertops, chair arms etc. The whole place is a no-go area.
My only worry is being air-ambulanced off the ship if he has an attack.
We take enough injections and medications etc with us but you are still meant to overnight in hospital cos there can be delayed reactions etc or secondary shocks.
Thats why I am always over cautious - I know I fuss over him too much but I cant help it. Even a trip to the pet shop last saturday was dangerous cos of all the animal food etc. He had to keep his hands in his pockets and not touch a thing. Its hard for a 6 year old to remember but he is brilliant with it all and very sensible. Its the non-obvious risks that are the problem. He had a reaction once on a bus cos the person sitting in the seat before us must have eaten nuts and the nut oil and salt was on the fabric.

These are only minor reactions. The big one is if he eats a nut - stand well back and wait for the projectile vomiting. Its like watching "the exorcist" film. Luckily this has only happened once.
Things like school parties etc I send in his own party food...its just easier and less stressful on the staff. Even a harmless cheese sandwich off a buffet could be contaminated - eg - what was on the chopping board before the cheese?, had the person making it been handling or eating nuts before touching the cheese or bread etc? The container they have been stored in to get to school - what was in it last? the list goes on and on...if you think too hard you'd go insane and Ellis wouldnt eat a thing.
Poohbush - hope you're all feeling better and you're not too exhausted from being "nurse".
I'm off to the school disco this afternoon - no dancing for me though - I'll be making and selling about 600 glasses of cordial.
After that I'm having some of the kids back to ours. Hopefully they'll all just collapse infront of the playstation or tv
bye for now everybody
