Makes me think of the time I was in the lounge of the Medical Day unit at our Children's Hospital. It was early on in my Daughters Cancer Treatment. She was in the playroom doing some art work, and I was in the lounge area outside the play room, a more peaceful area with a big screen TV, coffee table, magazines,, ect.. The only other person there was another mom, whom I had not met up to this point. A commercial came on TV, one about a Chocolate bar (Arrow Bar I think). Just before this, I was thinking that I should head down to the OASIS, a small caffeteria/snack store on the main level of the hospital, for a snack and a juice, as I had skipped breakfast that morning. DD was not allowed to eat breakfast on treatment days as she would be put "Under" for her procedure. So I, the mom, supported her by not eating myself (but would sneak down for a snack at the OASIS when she was otherwise occupied.
Well, this other mom, after the chocolate bar commercial, commented out loud but to no one in particular, "OH, I Would LOVE a Chocolate Bar right now". Hmmmmm I thought, and smiled to myself as I got up to go for my secret snack. I bought 3 chocolate bars and 3 juices. (one each would be for my daughter after her procedure).
When I got back up to the lounge area, I walked over to that mom and handed her a Chocolate Bar and a Juice. She was Totally surprised, and the smile that appeared on her face was Priceless.
From then onwards, we became friends. Our daughters had the same cancer, Leukemia. We had dinners together as I invited her to join our CHEO Moms Dinner group, we talked each other through some difficicult times, laughed together at funny things our kids did, watched movies together on nights when both our girls were admitted for days on end, celebrated when our girls each had a birthday, or finished another leg of their treatment protocol.
Sadly her child did not survive, Tragically her child did not survive. But friends we remain to this day, a friendship based on common ground, on the love of our children, on tragedy and faith and yes, even some joy. All because of a Chocolate Bar.
