Oct 30 2010 7 Night Western (PART 2)

Hi,
Yes, we will Be flying in late friday and staying at the Hyatt too. Maybe we will see each other at breakfast, will you be eating in the hotel?

We are arriving at Orlando late afternoon on Friday. We probably will eat breakfast at the hotel on Sat. morning. Hope to see you then. Have you ever stayed at the Hyatt. This will be different for us because we drove last year.

bheyman,
Hope to see you at the Hyatt also. I think this is going to be a fun cruise with so many nice people.

We've decided to take the slow drive down (Wed, Thurs, Fri).

I'm with you on the vacation days - I went up to 4 weeks this year and I still have two weeks carried over from last year plus I have one week of vacation that can be used whenever and never expires (so 7 weeks total I could take).

Now if only I had the money to fill all of those weeks with vacations......:rotfl:

I noticed that you are from Scarborough....we live in North Brampton! Hubby wants to drive down next summer for a golf vacation, but I'm unsure with 3 kids (12, 10 & 8). How's the drive down? It's about 24 hours right? Where/when do you stop, and how long does that normally take you?

Yes, we stayed at the Hyatt in 2008, before taking the same cruise. It's very convenient. You can just walk right off the plane and check in at the hotel, if you give the bellman your luggage tags, they will go down and get them from the airport for you. Are you Costco members? You can get a discount if you are.

Jen,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

We would be interested in the Trick or Treat on Halloween. Only one child in our group: 4yr old boy and we will be in stateroom 6086.

Thanks,
Brian

No problem, I've got him down!! More info will follow later but the meeting time and place is Sunday Oct. 31, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Deck 5 Atrium near the Oceaneers Lab.

Thanks so much!
:) Jen

I know you didn't ask me, but thought I'd tell of our experience from last fall driving down. Our kids then were 18, 16, 12 and 6. We made the drive over 2 days but had alotted ourselves 3. It was a total of 24 hours driving but obviously took longer with stopping for food and sleep and bathrooms and gas. We inisted everyone use a bathroom when we stopped for gas or to eat, so we wouldn't hear "I've gotta go" a half hour after leaving one of those said places. Now, we stopped at a Crackerbarrel for lunch on our 1st day, and although it was GREAT, we'll stick to fast food stops next time. A sit down table service place means a LOT of time will be eaten up. So we didn't get as far the 1st day as we had planned. We ended up stopping in Fredericksburg VA for the night. I don't recommend driving at night in the Virginia area, too many deer on the roads. Thats why we ended up stopping where we did!
The next day we drove straight through to Orlando. Left at 8:45 a.m, and arrived in Orlando at 10pm ish.
It was a long drive, but I quite enjoyed it. DH and I shared the driving, and we brought TONS of activities for the kids. They had the gamecube, movies, their DS's, books, paper and pencil crayons (I don't recommend markers or crayons on such a trip), activity books and journals and travel games. We heard no complaints other than arguing over the gamecube.
We are also doing the drive again this year, and I'm very much looking forward to it! Partly because during one of the stops on our way down, we'll be revealing the true purpose of the trip to our two boys! :)

Should we take bets on Tim's reaction? Good or Bad???? :rotfl:

I don't know, if he's like my girls there's no telling what he'll do :confused3, but I'll make a treat so if his reaction isn't the best then hopefully some cake & frosting will ease your frustration & his nerves about "the boat" and if Beth makes it out with her girls he'll be surrounded by excitement and have no choice buy to join in.:cheer2::banana:

The girls are very excited to meet "mommy's friend" that's going on the same cruise we are!" I have to say I am too

It's about 24 hours but generally we find it a little less. We've been driving to Florida since I was a child so it's a drive I'm very used to.

Recently what we've found works well is to drive two days and a bit (for example for a Sunday evening arrival you'd leave on Friday) on Friday, leave immediately after work (for me that's 5pm) and drive to either Sarnia or Detroit depending on where you want to cross the border and stay the night just after crossing the border. It shaves a few hours off of your two day drive (actually - it saves about 4 hours off of your two day drive). We always pack food for that first evening so we have dinner in the car but make sure that all the fresh foods are either eaten or tossed before crossing the border.

Saturday it's up early (after staying at a hotel where they offer a free breakfast so it's quick to get on the road) and then drive and stop in Georgia past Atlanta.

Sunday we cross into Florida and finish the drive and are generally in Disney by mid to late afternoon.

A couple of tips:

We always take the I-75 route. Other people say that the other route is faster but that hasn't been our experience. We also like to avoid the mountains (especially late at night). There is a book called "Along I-75" which tells you what is at each exit - this is invaluable to find gas, lodging and food (I hate stopping at one exit and then the next morning you get up and find at the next exit was all of the good motels and food). It also helps when you're looking for the nicer gas stations which have the big, clean restrooms.

Pack a bag that is only for the travel nights (clothes, pjs and toiletries). That way when you stop for the night, you're only bringing in one bag not everyone's suitcases.

When I was a child the rule was you had to at least try to go to the washroom when we stopped (my mom used to tell us to "try to make a little pee"). Even if they don't want to, it's important to get out and stretch your legs. Going along with that, it was always that we would get drinks at the same time (i.e. if everyone drinks at the same time, good chance you're going to go at the same time - if everyone is drinking "at will" things won't sync up - not that my parents were unreasonable or deprived us, it just does make sense).

Some food differences: KFC in the states is completely different than up here - especially in the South. They serve real food and some of them offer buffets. Sonic is a cool experience because it's a drive in (but they usually have tables if you want out of the car). Don't stick to McD's as you'll miss some great fast food places that you just won't see here.

Many of the gas stations are really full rest stop areas - gas, washrooms, restaurants, stores, fast food and drinks. It's easy to spend more time than you anticipate in these places but it's also great if you need a short break from the car.

Plan that when you stop for the night - whoever was the last driver, has time to unwind. After a long drive, it will feel like they are still moving/driving. In our family, that person hasn't been able to just drop off to sleep like the rest of the passengers.

Hope this stuff helps. Any specific questions, let me know.

So the last couple of nights at work I have been putting my Passporter together! Am I the only one who does that? LOL! I take all the pockets and bring them to the front, then I remove the pertinent info (ports, etc.) and use the pockets as dividers for each day..ie put the GC info behind the day 4 pocket then print my Captain Marvins info in the pocket, etc. I keep the maps and deck plans in the very front, and put the rest of the book in the back behind the pockets. (taking out the filler that I would not need, like the info on Med ports).

Over the top? Maybe. LOL. I couldn't fathom going on my RCCL cruise without a Passporter (curse them for not making a Royal version ;)) So I made my own. I printed the pages in the 7x5 size and punched the holes and it worked like a charm!

(Am I crazy? Maybe a little!)

So exciting to be this close, but so, so much to do still!

Ok, whats a passporter? Sounds interesting. I had always thought it was a book on DCL?

I've never purchased their binder, just the book, so I'm interested in seeing pictures as well.

It is a book, it comes in 2 versions, soft cover paperback and Deluxe which is looseleaf in a leather binder.

The book part is just that, but I use mine somewhat similar to a Franklin Covey Day Timer planner for those of you who used those back in the day (LOL my work used to buy them for us when I was an Admin) with folder pockets and note pages and stuff. I make calendar pages, spreadheets, of course important lists and print them to fit, punch holes and voila! Its awesome. I used it so much on my other cruises (even the RCCL one that I made all of the info myself!). We keep all of our docs in it, our birth certificates, my passport, castway club cards. I even had a small zipper pocket (that sadly broke) for misc. items.

LOL here are some pics that I just snapped that show a little better:

The inside cover with the slots and stuff. When it comes to you , usually it has the front cover of the book on the right but I rearrange mine so the deck plans are first, then my daily pockets.

Here is the backside of the Day 2 pocket, which I use as a divider, behind it on the right the section of the book on Key West

And here, same thing showing the backside of my GC info (Day 4) teh Divider pocket for Day 5. There is a small horizontal slot halfway down in the yellow cardstock for small papers and a larger pocket diagonally across teh top of the page for larger ones.

Thanks nenner! I just looked it up at our Chapters store, and they HAVE IT! For $35.00 and it's in stock! I'm going to pick it up this weekend! What a wonderful way to keep organized! Do you buy refills for each cruise?

No, we are not Costco members. We do not have them in our area. I am very glad the Hyatt is convienient. We like things to go as smooth as possible. I heard they were a good choice here on disboards. We are glad we found all of this wonderful info this year.
Thanks:thumbsup2

It's awesome, I think you'll love it! and going on the Dream next year you'll want it for all the new info. I will buy a new one next year or the year after in preparation for our cruise on the Fantasy!

LOL, which brings me to, no I don't buy refills. I have used a lot of the note paper and I try not to write on the folders. I will type up notes and tips in Word and then print them and insert instead. Ron makes out a full budget that we print and take notes on. Its funny I bought this version as a close out in '07 (its is the '06 edition), its served me well over the past few years. Most of the info is still pertinent. Oh and I gather up all of the note paper in the desk onboard and use that as notepaper. Bwahahah. The pens too! (shhh, its' my dirty secret!)

ETA: I discovered the night before last that my edition was printed BEFORE the Country Inn & Suites was built! Darnit! :ROTFL:

You can buy them direct: http://www.passporterstore.com/store/

If you have an Amazon account you can get them there too.

I got one a couple years ago, they're cool, but I used it more as a reference, not a planner.
