Oct 30 2010 7 Night Western (PART 2)

Oh my gosh! What a dream! You obviously have way too much on your mind

We promise we won't leave you to go off snorkelling without you, you poor thing. How mean we all were . As to the significance of the rhubarb, well??!!!

You do realise you are now going to have 50 odd people checking you have your swimsuit with you when we leave the ship ;)

Horrible Dream last night! We were leaving the Magic on our Grand Caymen Day, for our Captain Marvin's excursion. When on the Captain Marvins boat, heading out to our snorkeling area, I suddenly realized that I had packed my DH's and DS'S Bathing suits but had FORGOTTEN MINE!! Mine was back on the ship! So the captian Marvin's guy stopped by a store at the shore. We all went in to shop for a bit. They had some ladies bathing suits, but the cheapest one was $300.00!!!! And then I notice YOU WERE ALL GONE! Including my DH and DS's. I was left in the store to find a bathing suit, while you all went snorkeling! Hours later, after spending way too much on a stupid bathing suit and or some reason, also a few stalks of ruhbarb, Captain Marvin with just my DH and DS's Came back to pick me up. He had left you all at the Stingray City. By the time we got to stingray City, it was time to head back to the ship! I awoke right at that point, all upset :scared1: THen realized it was just a dream!
No more late night snacks for you!

You do realise you are now going to have 50 odd people checking you have your swimsuit with you when we leave the ship ;)

:rotfl2:

Hello All!

Unless you are going to Palo, please don't stress over what you are wearing to dinner. You will see people dressed in a wide range of styles! Just remember you are on vacation - and enjoy it!!

They are strict at Palo, but anywhere else, they won't kick you out of a dining room!!

Thank you for this. I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb, but I paid my $ and I want my dinner! :rotfl:

Ha!! I had a great dream last night....I had a dream that we were upgraded to the Walt Suite and I was so excited to show our travel group our new digs for the cruise!!!

I think I have the opposite problem as everyone else - my Dad went out and bought a tux! (it was on sale for $99 since Sid Silvers was going out of business - he got the jacket, shirt, tie, vest and two pairs of pants for the one time, low, low price....).

My mother's formal dress is light pink, long and sparkly so it will look wonderful with her sitting next to my dad's tux.

My dress is long but very plain (and black). Now I wonder about getting something more formal to go with them?

And we're not really "shorts" people (well, my dad maybe but for pants he won't touch dockers - he only wears dress slacks). My mother often wears dresses (mainly because it's easier for us to help dress her) and I either wear pants or skirts. I only own 1 pair of capris and even though it's been a scorcher of a summer, they are still sitting neatly folded, unworn this year.

I'm thinking now, we're going to be too dressed up for dinner on the cruise?

Never can be too dressed on a cruise!!! This is a pic of my parents and our kids from formal night on Carnival but my parents wore the same outfit on their 7 night DCL cruise. I just can't find the DCL pic at the moment. I have often worn a full length gown on formal night...still not sure what I am bringing for this cruise.

Maybe we should all vote on which dream we liked better! :rotfl2:

I have no idea as to why rhubarb was in the dream. I hate rubarb unless it is cooked in a pie or something. The forgetting the bathing suit though is a common theme with me. On our trip last fall, I forgot to pack my bathing suit and realized it halfway to FL. It took me a while to find a store in Orlando/Kissimee that had bathing suits, finally found an ugly one my size at Walmart in the clearance section. That bathing suit has gone AWOL now along with DH's Sandals from that cruise. The bathing suit I didn't mind losing (as long as I wasn't wearing it when I lost it :rotfl2:) But those Sandals, would have come in handy this summer!

Hi Kate! My Dsister is coming on our cruise with her family and they are from Centreville, VA! So another Northern Va cruiser!

And be sure to actually book another cruise while onboard!!! That is the one tip I messed up on for our cruise. I tried to get my hubby to do it when we sailed two years ago and he didn't want to, but low and behold we booked again anyways but without the great discount or OBC! Even if you aren't sure when you want to go again just book a dummy date! The deposit amounts are half price too, so they make it easier to book on board for a future sailing. :thumbsup2

Too Cool. Looking forward to meeting them and you. Amazing how a day or two away and we have so many posts.

Wow - I have finally caught up with the thread! We were out of town for 5 days with my only internet access via my blackberry (which doesn't work all that well with the DIS). I never did read through the whole first thread and it doesn't look like I'll ever get enough time to do that - I sort of feel like I'm barging into the middle of a conversation without any background info :confused3

On our previous 4 cruises, we have seen just about any possible attire in the dining room. For casual night, DH wears his "work casual" dockers and short-sleeve button-down shirts (nearly always plaid! This is an ongoing joke among friends and family that he is ALWAYS in plaid) DS11 has usually worn nice shorts and a shirt - he tends to only eat with us a couple of times as he has always wanted to do stuff at the kid clubs. Often he will come to dinner, eat something quickly and leave for the clubs. Other times, he eats room service as we are getting ready for dinner and skips the dining room completely. Strangely, he likes dressing up for formal night. DH owns a tux (we sing in a oratorio choir and he needs it 2 times per year for concerts) and DS11 gets a kick out of also dressing in a tux (we get him a REALLY cheap one from eBay - the last one was $25) and matching dad.

For two of our previous cruises a group of DIS ladies decided to have "grown-up princess" night on formal night. We wore our fanciest gowns and tiaras. Some wore gloves and/or lots of rhinestones. It was a lot of fun. On the Panama cruise with the HUGE DIS group, there were probably around 50 of us! The other time we did it, the group was smaller - maybe 10 of us? It started with the complaint that the little girls get to dress up in their princess outfits and why don't we ever get to be princesses anymore? :thumbsup2

I'm not sure what we are doing about Pirate Night this time. DS11 is NOT being a pirate for halloween this year (He has done that 3 times in the past, so not interested in it again). He seems to have settled on the Mad Hatter (the Johnny Depp version) so my mother is starting to work on a costume for him. I have a pirate costume, but if the rest of the family isn't dressing up I'm not sure if I want to do it alone. (DH isn't very into that - he didn't even dress up the couple times we went to MNSSHP and DS and I were dressed to the hilt!)

Off to New England with some of the family for the weekend....first Gloucester/Rockport and then Gillette Stadium for the Country Music Festival on Sat night!!!

The family we are leaving behind is jealous (oh well!!)

I am loving that Mickey Themed Tux!!! They look great!!

Now that I'm all caught up, here are some pics that go with my post above...

This is a photo of some of the ladies from Grown-Up Princess night on the Panama cruise (2008 Eastbound). It's a little weird since DH took it from above as the official DCL photogs were shooting down on the main floor. This is about 1/2 to 2/3 of those that dressed up - some just didn't want to be in the pic, some had other places to be, some were still eating dinner, some were doing family pics elsewhere...

We also did a group pic for Pirate night - this is most of those who dressed up, but I heard some late dining folks didn't make it in time for the picture. Again, this is not the whole DIS group since many didn't dress up (such as my DH who took this photo).

IMG_3190_sm.jpg

The last two are my DS (he was 9 at the time) and myself. DS is with Capt Jack (this is NOT the DCL guy - this is a fellow DIS cruiser who is REALLY into dressing up as Capt Jack - even wears contacts for the eye color). I am on the right with a good friend that we met here on the DIS before this cruise - she happens to live about 25 minutes from me! This isn't the best photo of me ever - I think it looks a little odd since my face is still a little swollen from an injury I got at Disneyland the day before the cruise. (I fell and ripped the inside of my lip - had a Disney ambulance ride, 6 hours at the ER and 4 stitches in my mouth! :scared1:) But, it does show my pirate costume.

and or some reason, also a few stalks of ruhbarb

:lmao:

By any chance were you watching a re-run of "Bones" last night on t.v. before bed? There was a scene in the show where they used tons of rhubarb to clean a skeleton!

I have a family reunion on Saturday and my step-brother's wedding is on Sunday (his third one, although only the second one I am attending). My Dad lives upstate and is coming down and only just now tells me he wants to see my kids on Saturday....the date of the mother's family reunion. Needless to say, my Dad is now put out with me because my Mom sees my kids all the time. I don't know why I should be in trouble now, it's not like he shared his plans with me. :sad2: I thought he was going to be busy with wedding stuff all weekend. I'd cancel with my Mom if I could, but the party has been in the works for over a year and I am driving her. My two sisters cannot go, and my Mom would kill me if I bailed on her too. She is a wreck about going, especially since my grandmother (her Mom) passed away two months ago.

It's amazing to me that at 38 years of age, I am still caught in the middle between my parents.....:confused3

You're going to be in my neighborhood! Gillette is about 30 minutes from me (ah, without traffic :) ). Have fun!

I have never used a Travel Agent before so I am not familiar with how it works but I see that other peopple get great deals so I have a few questions....

We would like to book another cruise for next year, we usually choose the cheapest week....we just want to get on the Dream!

Can I book a cruise now and if i can get a better deal on the ship, book that too then cancel the original?

Yes

I heard about rebooking onboard (we do this) then switching to DU and getting more incentives added to what DCL already gave.

This time we are happy to book an interior room, like i said...we just want to get on the Dream!!

Can you rebook on the cruise and get a GTY room?

Yes. I am not a big fan of DU, but I do appreciate that they sponsor this forum. I use a travel agency that has a great team of agents. They often go above and beyond the call of duty. I also like that I can at anytime call and speak to someone directly.

Whats the best way to go about it...I want to be prepared this time when we "sit at the little desk" on the cruise......lol

Normally on deck 5 there is a sales desk where you can wait your turn to sit with the Sales agent to book a cruise. They are not there all the time, find the sheet near the desk with the Sales Agent's hours and choose a time that works for you. Keep in mind busy times on the ship will mean a long line at the sales desk.

Thanks in Advance for all of your knowledge

I added my answers above.

BTW...If you are really comfortable with what you are doing you can call the sales agent number. In the past, I have from my stateroom called the extension for the agent, and give them the following: sailing, stateroom, dining time, insurance, and transfer information. The agent will charge the deposit for the booking to your stateroom account and within a day or so a invoice is slipped under your door.

Often the line at the sales desk can be long so to save you the trouble of waiting in line when you would rather be hanging by the pool just call the agent instead. I find it a great time saver.

Can I book a cruise now and if i can get a better deal on the ship, book that too then cancel the original? Sure you can...if you want to switch to Dreams I would wait though...Since DCL does not give as large of a commission to people who book with DCL and THEN switch to a TA, Dreams incentives are not as big if you do the initial booking through DCL than transfer.

We have used Dreams and have had excellent service. I like to do a lot of my own planning and my agent (Tracy) is great about that. We did have a huge problem last cruise (as I have mentioned many times before) when one of our two adjoining rooms was moved away from the other. She had to do a lot of behind the scenes legwork calling supervisors and such (and sure enough the Supervisors knew us by name and our situation last time when we arrived in the terminal). We also had another room drama she had to deal with once and she called me on my cell phone to work it out. :thumbsup2 She has always been on top of things!

Back to the rebooking, though. IMO unless the cruise you are looking at is close to the MV or looks like it is selling quick enough to possibly sell out, I would wait to rebook onboard. Its just less messy. But we have transferred and already-booked cruise to an onboard booking before. It went seamlessly for us.

I

Yes, but remember the incentives will not be as large for a transferred cruise than an originally booked one. You should state at the rebooking desk that DU is your travel agent, that way you will get the full OBC incentives. (If you have not previously booked the cruise online through DCL). This is because DCL has reduced the commission on bookings that are transferred to a TA after initial booking.

About the GTY I'm not sure...IMO I wouldn't see why not...but I don't know if they have to sell a certain percentage of staterooms in a category for instance before moving into GTY status.

:) My advice is don't wait to the end of the cruise to head to the little desk. It gets CRAZY BUSY the last few nights!! :thumbsup2

Pamela, those pictures are awesome!! And they beg the question,

Are we going to do a group photo?

I think that would be great! I do know how hard it can be to try to meet up later in the cruise, so I think if we do a group photo during the Dis meet(say 3:15 or 3:20) that would be the most convenient for everyone. What do you all think? We could just take it in the PL, or, we could also walk out to the Atrium stairs to get one of those cool shots.

One of my biggest regrets of my last cruise was missing the group photo! :sad1:

On to other points of business...DIS TRICK 'O TREAT

I did a lot of brainstorming last night. Although I haven't gotten with Leslie and Ellen yet (will be sending that PM in a few) as it sits right now we will need 6 (six) adult volunteers to man candy stations. all of the stations will be in public places. I have tried to make them both easy enough to find but slightly challenging.. and not too busy of an area but not dead as a doornail boring either. So If you think you could help out please let me know by posting in the thread or by PM.

You will have a bag of candy and also a bag of multicolored clue scrolls to hand out. The last station may or may not have a treasure chest to watch over. I will take the first stop/where we meet to organize. It will require about 30-45 minutes of your time to basically relax in that spot (most have chairs in the area to sit) and hand out the treats and clues to the children as they arrive. :thumbsup2

If you are willing to help out , please let me know! Thanks!!!:goodvibes

Thanks ladies I am getting together a PM to send you with more details! :thumbsup2
