but I swear I never noticed that My Country Tis of Thee.... sounds just like God Save the Queen. (not the Sex Pistols version!)

I was watching a documentary on the Monarchy in England when I realized how very similar they sound.

Are we paying royalties?

Yup, hijacking the song was basically our lyrical middle-finger to the crown. Of course the Sex Pistols had a very similar tone on their take of God Save The Queen

I remember I was watching the Olympics with a friend (who wasn't all that bright) & when someone from the UK won & they played the song he didn't understand why they were playing our version. My dad explained that the tune was their national anthem & the friend thought my dad was full of it. Like I said, not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
