OBB question

I'm hoping I can make this short and sweet...

I currently have a European cruise booked for next May with our OBB and the 10% discount. That OBB expires August 4th, 2024. I'm worried bc of flight prices, I might have to cancel that cruise. I'm holding out hope to make that trip happen, but if not, I'm thinking about making a "back up" cruise reservation out of FL so I don't have to worry too much about flight costs. I won't make any final decisions until January when my European cruise final payment is due.

My question is, can I transfer that OBB discount to my Caribbean cruise, if I cancel? I know that if I were to switch right now from the European to Caribbean I could keep it, but I'm not sure if I switch after I already have both cruises book it would transfer.

I just don't want to miss out on any savings by booking the cruise further out.

Never CANCEL the reservation made with an OBB if you want to use it. You Modify / Move the Reservation #.

And your unused European OBB cannot just take over that backup cruise reservation.

Just wait and see what happens with airfare. If you decide to go Caribbean, call DCL (or your TA) and have the cruise changed.

I think you will have to pay the going rate for the new cruise when you do modify. If you think it will go up more than 10% before you make your Europe decision, book it now and drop your OBB (for a refund) or hold onto it until it expires (by picking a dummy, holding cruise as your modification).

My understanding is that the Onboard Booking discount must be applied to a new reservation and can't be directly transferred to an existing reservation. So, if you do decide to apply the OBB to a previously-booked Caribbean cruise in January, you will need to cancel and rebook. As auntlynne said, you would pay the current rate for that cruise (minus the OBB discount).

It's difficult to predict whether or by how prices on a May cruise will increase between now and January. If you can spare the money for two deposits, it does make sense to book both now. (If they are at the same time, though, I'm not sure if you can have 2 cruises booked for the same person on the same dates.) If you decide not to take the European cruise, you can then determine whether the price of the Caribbean cruise has increased by more than 10%. If it hasn't, you can move the European cruise booking to the Caribbean cruise, keeping your OBB, and cancel your previous Caribbean reservation. If the price for the Caribbean cruise has gone up enough that the OBB wouldn't save money, you can either move the European booking to just before the OBB expires (in case you find another cruise to take before August) or just cancel and get a refund of the OBB payment.

As others said, do not cancel the Europe cruise. You would have to move that booking to a Carribbean sailing. If you already have a Caribbean sailing booked, you can't move the OBB discount to that one. You would have to cancel the Caribbean sailing, then move the European one to the Caribbean in order to keep the discount.

But, prices on the Caribbean sailing might have gone up so much that you would actually lose money doing that. In that case, you might be better rolling the dice with what you have. If you don't use the OBB the deposit will be refunded to you (and you could get another OBB on the Caribbean cruise to use on a future cruise).

Correct. It used to be that you actually booked the future cruise while you were onboard (hence, "onboard booking.") Now, you just purchase a placeholder for a future cruise and then 'convert' it to booking an actual sailing after you get off the ship (hence, "placeholder").
