I got sucked into the obama speech thread and posted. Somebody stop me please.:headache:

So did I.:sad2:

I've been lurking here for a bit. I think I'll stick to posting here and just ignore the other threads.

Hey, I just PM'd you to join us here & you are already here!

I've found the Ignore feature to be VERY useful.... half the comments I have no idea what they are, my blood pressure was getting too high :goodvibes

Except that he willingly exposed his daughters to these disturbing statements. They are, I believe, 5 and 9. Sad.

He did?
How do you know?

Were they there?

Even if the family was there, when I was that age I was either in Sunday school, or daydreaming during the sermon.

I guess since my childhood minister was a child molester, I am one too?
Is that how it works?

:confused3

Trying to think through how Obama's relationship with his pastor would manifest during a middle east crisis (especially in regards to Israel). Would his spiritual advisor (who is anti-Israeli) whisper in his ear and would Obama listen?

I've read his thoughts on his site - before anyone sends me there.

What do you think? I'm really looking for informed, thoughtful opinions.

In his debates he has said that our relationship with Israel would remain unchanged, they are a strong asset and ally. He has worked with the Jewish community in Illinois and apparently they have a strong working relationship, or have had for eight years. If you want to hear it out of his own mouth the debates are on Youtube, as I'm sure they are many places, debate # 20. This was very specifically addressed.

If you want to discuss his pastor, there is a pastor thread, but, I choose (as do many on this thread) to believe that he was not in the small subset of parishioners on the days of those sermons, and that up until and through now, Obama has said nothing, voted in no way, and indicated in any way that he holds animosity towards any race or towards Israel since you specifically asked about that country.

As is the case for anyone, you can choose to believe what he says or not.

P.S. and I'm glad you've been to the site

LoraJ, I don't think that's how it works, because that would include my DH as well, and he surely is not....

It's easier not to argue with people from the other side of the aisle, they come here to prod you on, it's simply not worth raising an eyebrow to.

Why would he call his pastor at a time like that? He'll have a Cabinet, advisers, so I don't think he'll ask Rev. Wright. Besides, I think the Rev. has retired so Obama will have a new spiritual advisor.

:thumbsup2 MTE!

This isn't Bush we're talking about.

You raise a good point, Reverend Moss is much younger, and carries a different message, you can see him in some clips on Youtube, I saw him in an interview and he was a very interesting, charasmatic guy. Although I'm not interested in formal religion, I wouldn't mind going to one of his sermon's.

On a side note a local girl went to Trinity for a sermon (she was white) and she did not leave feeling hate, she was on the news this evening, a student from UVM....

OK, while I just can't seem to stay on our own thread today, I thought I'd jot down just a few of the legislative action Obama has taken, since there seems to be some interest as to what his record could be , might be based on this patorgate, so here is what he's done in part... Everyone please find the scary parts so we can complain about them bitterly LOL...

As a member of the minority party of the State Senate for six of his eight years there, Obama wrote a health insurance law that covered an additional 20,000 children, a welfare reform law, an earned-income-tax-credit law for working-poor families, and death penalty reform that passed unanimously. During his last two years in the majority, he sponsored 780 bills, 280 of which became law.

Speaking more for the children:
Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill expanding two low- cost health insurance programs aimed at thousands of working poor families who make too much for Medicaid but too little to realistically afford private coverage.

The expansion of the KidCare and FamilyCare programs makes 20,000 more children and 65,000 more adults immediately eligible, the governor said.

And within three years, as the eligibility range continues to expand to higher income levels, another 300,000 adults will be eligible to sign up, he said.

“Tens of thousands of working families … are literally one illness away from catastrophe,” Blagojevich said at a bill-signing ceremony at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. “A good society, a compassionate society, doesn’t sit idly by and let these families fend for themselves.”

The bill was sponsored in the state House by Sandra Pihos, a Glen Ellyn Republican, and in the state Senate by Barack Obama, a Chicago Democrat.

Since Obama entered the U.S. Senate in 2004, he has joined Republican Richard Lugar in writing a law that funds the destruction or securing of loose nuclear and conventional weapons (shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, for example) throughout the world. He also introduced the first bill, that soon became law, to fund and address pandemic flu preparedness.

He helped pass a far-reaching ethics and campaign finance bill in the Illinois state Senate and made the issue a priority on arriving in Washington. Much to the displeasure of his colleagues, Obama promoted an outside commission to handle Senate ethics complaints. He co-authored the lobbying reform bill awaiting President Bush's signature and pushed -- again to the dismay of some colleagues -- to include a provision requiring lawmakers to report the names of their lobbyist-bundlers.

He has co-sponsored bills to overhaul the presidential public financing system and public financing of Senate campaigns.

In one inspiring discovery, Obama and Clinton teamed up to pass a law that helps hospitals disclose medical errors. It goes a long way toward serving patients while reducing malpractice claims.

OK, so lets all pick out the scary parts and talk about them...

Obama has specifically said Rev. Wright was his spiritual advisor, not his political advisor. I doubt he'd be calling him. Many politicians have been able to set aside their religion when it comes to politics, anyway. Catholics, for example, have had to reassure pro-choice voters.

A crisis of faith would be a different situation, not political at all. But he has a new pastor, so he would very likely call him.

I don't go to my Priest for advice on economic matters, medical issues nor do I ask him political questions. I go to my Priest for advice and assistance in living my life according the the teachings of Jesus (a pretty controversial guy, IMHO) and the laws of my Church. I have no problem finding answers to the other pressing issues of life from people who have more experience in those areas.

Why is it so difficult to assume that a President would do the same?

Welcome! Thanks for posting your question. As others have said, Obama has said Wright is his spiritual advisor and not his political advisor.

From his website:

On Israel
Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama strongly supports the U.S.-Israel relationship, believes that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America's strongest ally in the Middle East. Obama supports this closeness, stating that that the United States would never distance itself from Israel.

Support Israel's Right to Self Defense: During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel's right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria's involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He believes strongly in Israel's right to protect its citizens.

Support Foreign Assistance to Israel: Barack Obama has consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. He defends and supports the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and has advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. He has called for continuing U.S. cooperation with Israel in the development of missile defense systems.

He also cosponsored the US-Israel Cooperation Act aimed at using R&D to develop renewable energy resources for the two countries so the two can be energy independent from the Middle East.
