Can you say JOKE? Illinois has the WORST funding of the their public schools in America. We rank 48 on how our public schools are funded. The PTA has been fighting this LOSING battle for years.

If Obama cannot fund his OWN state with school funding, what can he do for a NATION?

Well if you have not been reading other Obama threads, he worked on various charitable organizations that help raise Tens of Millions for Chicago area schools.

Not perfect but he did what few other politicians ever have.

Yea, grab the popcorn and sit by and watch. I have tried to keep my opinions to myself for the most part. But as someone who sees our funding problem EVERYDAY, I cannot sit by. It is a shame that our kids are suffering. Our home owners bare the blunt of our funding. The more your house is worth and the more better off the neighborhood, the better the schools. He needs to practice what he preaches in his own backyard.

Are you speaking about the Annenberg Challenge? That was found by a study to have had little to no impact regardless of the amount of money raised or spent.

I don't know how any school system can be worse than DC's. It spends an incredible amount of money per student, and still sucks.

But Sen. Obama was right about the new superintendent - she's awesome and is turning the city upside down with her reform ideas. And the mayor, to his great credit, is standing behind her all the way.

Ask any Chicago Public School Parent if they saw ANY of that money. These parents cannot even send their children to school without worrying if they will come home alive much less, if the are learning anything.

Do we know what "charitable organizations" those millions went to?
I don't. Do you?

And the teacher's union has fought that reform every step of the way.

This thread makes no issue about effectiveness, the complaint was about funding.

You want the parents to see the money? seems odd

As for what schools received funds, you are the one that started this thread feel free to search.

this is obviously another Obama cant be president cuz the STATE of ILLINOIS(he is a US SENATOR) does not fund their schools as well as you would like. But of course if IL did, you would just complain about how he raised taxes to do it.

Oh yeah - too bad Sen. Obama didn't bring that up tonight. ;)

The latest is that Superintendet Rhee says she doesn't need union buy-in to proceed - she can move forward with her plan without raising the salaries.

So, they'll get what half want and half hate, but with no additional money.

That issue is not limited to Obama's state. It's like that all over America.

Raise taxes? Are you joking? Do you know how much I PAY in property taxes. If it means my children would be getting a better education, I wouldn't care. I don't want the parents to see the money, I want the KIDS to get the money. I want my child to have the same opportunities that every other child in this country has to the BEST education they can get. Neither one of them in MY opinion is fit to run this country.

As does a large segment of the education system.
Yes schools are a business, it is no longer about how they can best teach kids it is about how they can get more funds.

Label a kid special needs=more funding
Label a kid ESL=more funding
Label a kid gifted=more funding

it goes on and on, but if there is one area that local politics and parents make a difference it is in education. But those are the elections that get the lowest turnout, much easier to blame the presidential nominees.

Just maybe it has to do with the wonderful (NOT) program that the Bush Administration created called "No Child Left Behind" but didn't bother to properly fund it.

I hate McCain's idea of school vouchers. Giving a voucher for partial tuition to a family that can most likely afford to private school on their own and then leaving those that can't afford to send their children to a private school to fend for themselves in an underfunded public school. UGH!

Neither candidate addressed NCLB...that is a big disappointment because if the general public really understood it they would be opposed to it. It DOES not help education it HURTS it. It has teachers teaching to tests, and it is like a pyramid scheme. A school system needs to increase its progress by a per cent each year. The problem is if you have a system which hits the advanced level they can not go higher SO they will NOT make AYP adequate yearly progress even though the school is performing at the top level. THEY ARE labeled an under performing school!

I for one don't blame Presidential nominees for education, but I do think that the federal government should get out of it. No one knows better what a school needs than the parents, teacher and officials that work in and for a public school. Ultimate responsbility rests there, IMO.

DH and I are both products of public schools, he in Michigan, I in Florida. It's amazing to me that public schools have spiraled downward in such a relatively short (~25 years) time. And I really believe that the root of the problem goes back to the creation of the Dept. of Education. And no, this is not a slam on President Carter. I think it was a well intentioned idea that has gone horribly wrong. And our children are suffering for it.

In the DC area, the vouchers cover all but the elite private schools. Tuition for most parochial schools is all but covered by the vouchers, and there is financial aid available to cover the balance. Our school is in Alexandria, VA, and while we can't accept DC vouchers, fully half of our students are on either partial or full financial aid, with the PTO working our butts off to pay for it so that kids that have no place else to go can come there. We have a number of families from DC that attend our school, and work hard to make sure they are able to attend, even with no vouchers.
