NYC to Canada July 8, 2012: Its Magic, Eh?

Glad you are interested in the fish extender gift exchange. I need all your info to add you to the list.....cabin #, names and ages......this info will be added to the who is cruising with us list as well as the FE gift exchange list

Oops not necessary....found it....small screen on the blackberry is not too good when looking at lists! Will add you when I break out the laptop!

Glad you are interested in the FE gift exchange. I will be updating that list when I get on my laptop...it is too difficult to do on my blackberry!

Hi

Third time trying to post..it keeps logging me off...is there a way to fix my 'log in time'?!

I'll type fast!

Just booked our first Disney cruise last week! So excited!!

We are Grandma from NY (Long Island), Mom (that's me!) and DD who will turn 13 the week before we sail...this is a girl's birthday celebration for my DD! We are from Boston.

Many questions but my short list for now....

I've figured out what an FE is and think it would be fun to participate....but want to know a few things...

Do we do one gift per person per cabin? Not one a day per cabin? Just need clarification!

Do we have to make the gifts? Looks like that from a thread linked here...geez, not sure how crafty I am...better start now!! Or can it be Disney not homemade?

Do we also need to make an FE? How do I do this?!

Do we decorate our door, too?

Looking forward to the cruise!

We are on Deck 7...forget the cabin number at the moment.

Hello Everyone -

Myself and my DD (15) will be cruising on July 8th - can't wait for my first mother/daughter cruise! And only a 20 minute ride to the ship! If anyone has NY questions, I may be able to help.

Oh and cabin 2060

Hi

Third time trying to post..it keeps logging me off...is there a way to fix my 'log in time'?! ... not sure if it is related to activating your account when you first registered ...

Just booked our first Disney cruise last week! So excited!! This will be our first Disney cruise also!

We are Grandma from NY (Long Island), Mom (that's me!) and DD who will turn 13 the week before we sail...this is a girl's birthday celebration for my DD! We are from Boston.

I've figured out what an FE is and think it would be fun to participate....but want to know a few things...

Do we do one gift per person per cabin? Not one a day per cabin? Just need clarification! My understanding is whatever you are comfortable with ... you can get one gift for the cabin or for each person ... but it is not one per day ... not unless you just won the lotto!! :rotfl:

Do we have to make the gifts? Looks like that from a thread linked here...geez, not sure how crafty I am...better start now!! Or can it be Disney not homemade? No, you do not have to make the gifts. It can be Disney-themed if you like, something related to your home town or state ... anything you want! I am definitely not crafty (in that particular manner anyways :lmao:) so have been picking up things when I can ... on sale, at the Dollar store ... just remember that you have to pack those FE gifts with you when you go so you have to make room in your suitcase ... you are able to ship it ahead to your stateroom if you so choose, as we will be doing, since we are on B2B cruises and it is too many to carry with us all the way down to FL ... just think of it as a stocking stuffer activity from a "Secret Santa" ... it's a great way to have fun with other Disney cruisers and to meet new people!

Do we also need to make an FE? How do I do this?! It depends if you are crafty or not if you would like to make one ... if you go to eBay and search fish extenders there is a person who can make one for you if you like ...

Do we decorate our door, too? Yes ... decorate your door:cheer2: ... here is ONE link that talks about this particular topic and where you may be able to get some designs made for you ...
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2745821 ... they may have started a new thread as I haven't checked in a while ...

Looking forward to the cruise!

Yes, we were sucessful also. We booked Brunch for the last sea day and dinner for the first night (the thought of having dinner while we sail out of the harbor was very attractive). Normally, we book Palo for Pirate night (don't like the pirate night menu) but we are hoping that DCl does something similar to what they did on the Alaska cruises in which the pirate night menu was replaced by a Taste of Alaska menu. I think a Taste of Canada menu would be great: Molson's, beavertails, and Tim Horton donuts, not to mention that dried seaweed they chew in the Maritimes.

We did book excursions for both ports, but to be honest, none of the DCL excursions are must do's for us. We are starting to look into renting cars in both ports and just driving to the nearby provinicial and national parks on are own.

Everything was wide open, except for the private car trips, so I'm hoping for good luck for all the silver CC members and first timers in getting the reservations they want in a few weeks.

WiscBill, I read you signed up for excursions. As this is our first cruise, I think I can't do that until 75 days out??

I am thinking of Hopewell Rocks as it's an iconic Canadian image, so to speak. But the thought of 2 hours on a bus to get there is a bit daunting!

As Disney hasn't done this itinerary before, no one here can give advice....though has anyone done a Canadian cruise not on Disney that might know??

My daughter turns 13 the week before we travel (it's a birthday/turning 13 celebration for her!) and it's a surprise, though not sure how long I can keep the secret....I want her to be part of some of the planning!

I think the Hopewell Rocks will be an active type trip (as we can't take Grandma on the kayaking trip....not her thing!) so trying to find something fun together. I saw the pink bus trips but frankly think my daughter might be bored!

Also, does anyone know about the teen/tween rooms? I read that on the Magic it is for ages 11-14 but other ships have one for 13-17? Frankly, I prefer the 11-14 for her, though I'm not sure how much time she will spend there anyway. I know that first day/night thing is important so I'll be sure to have her go to that...

getting excited!

Oh and for whoever is arranging the FE thing.....which I finally understand and told my mom about this morning and she thinks it sounds fun....we are room 7546.

Thanks!

We're gold, so registered early this morning. We have Palo brunch at 10:30 on the first sea day and then high tea on the second sea day. Still plenty of slots available when I booked.

Right now, we are doing the Peggy's Cove & Hop On/Hop Off tour and the Alice in Wonderland Garden Party...though I keep changing my mind on that one!

Hey TrudyT623, we need your cabin # or no one will be able to deliver FE gifts to you! Thanks! Glad you are joining us!

We're gold, so registered early this morning. We have Palo brunch at 10:30 on the second sea day and then high tea at 3pm....so we probably won't be hungry that night! I've never done either of those, though. There were several brunch slots available on the second sea day. Only dinner available on the first sea day.

Right now, we are doing the Peggy's Cove & Hop On/Hop Off tour and the Alice in Wonderland Garden Party...though I keep changing my mind on that one!

I'm with you on waffling for/against the Alice in Wonderland Garden Party. 90 minutes each way on the bus, making the excursion over 7 hours, is putting a damper on it for me. :scared: Have not committed to this one...yet!

I know...I will probably change it, though it does sound like fun. My thing is that she's done tea with Alice on the ship and there is an Alice/Mad Hatter tea party at the Grand Floridian (we're in FL), so it isn't hugely special to do the Alice party...but I was afraid I'd miss out on it if I didn't book it. I'm also looking at the St. Martins/Bay of Fundy excursion. That looks like fun and not such a long day. Not sure about the tide schedule though. Someone posted a link to tide predictions on the Canadian cruise thread, but it is Greek to me. Hopewell Rocks would be fun as well, but again that is a really long drive and you are kind of dependent on tides.

We booked the Hopewell rocks tour, but are also going back and forth on whether to actually do it. Spending four hours on a bus is not my idea of a fun excursion, but it is a unique environment and according to the tide tables, we should arrive well within the low tide window for walking along the beach. One option we are starting to look at is renting a car and driving to St. Martin's along the parkway, stopping at the parks and caves by ourselves. St. Martin's looks like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive away, so it would not take the whole day.

We booked the whale watching in Halifax, but may drop that also. Like Saint John, we are starting to explore renting a car and going to Peggy's Cove on our own.

I think (but not positive) that I read the tides at Hopewell Rocks will be high the day we are there. So that, combined with a 2 hour drive each way, doesn't seem to make it worthwhile.

We are thinking of the train ride which goes over the reversing tides.

I feel like I would like to do something different and 'Canadian'.....Halifax sounds beautiful but similar in so many ways to Boston (where we live)....the whole 'harbor experience' So I would like to do something a bit different.

Would have loved the Alice Tea party but, alas, at 13, it's not on my daughter's top 10 list anymore.

I stumbled upon a link on this board last night that is all about Canadian excursions. It is great.....made it through a few pages last night....I will see if I can find it again and post the link here (though maybe you're all more tech savvy than I am and you all know about it already.)

Will link it here when I find it.

According to the tide tables from the Hopewell Rocks website, the seven hour time frame to walk safely on the beach at Hopewell rocks is 09:26 to 16:26 on the day we are there, July 11. Low tide is still 8 ft above sea level, with high tide at 35 ft at 7:45PM. However, I don't see anyway we could be there for high tide and still make it back to the ship.

If I had the money, I'd book the 2 day motor coach tour which starts in Halifax and then tours the countryside around to St. John. That would give you enough time to even get to PEI for an overnight stay.
