NYC to Canada July 8, 2012: Its Magic, Eh?

Tinkified, I love your screen name! Tink is my favorite!

I'd love to do Fish Extender gifts as well. Is anyone else interested in doing them? We have a pretty good list going! :wizard:

Oh my gosh, Sabrecmc, I am laughing as I read your plans b/c my DD is 5 and I want to do so much of what you are planning! :thumbsup2

I want to see Wicked but don't know if we will fit it in, both schedule-wise AND budget for this trip! Also my traveling group have all seen it I think, but I doubt it would be difficult to persuade them to see it again :goodvibes

Have seen Lion King on Broadway (years ago) and absolutely LOVED it! What a beautiful production! Have not seen Mary Poppins but would also like to see that. popcorn::

My mom is also cruising with us and has frequently commented that she wants to take DD to American Girl in NYC when she's old enough to enjoy/appreciate it! princess:

*Sigh* I guess I really need to extend this trip to fit in some good NYC time as well! Now to convince DH who is already regretting not being able to join us this trip! :guilty:

I'm struggling with which port adventures to pick! I keep changing my mind. The Tall Ship Silva thing in Halifax seems fun, but we have a pirate ship here in FL that does the same thing. Garden tea with Alice looks awesome, but WDW has a tea with Alice & the Mad Hatter that doesn't seem all that different. Argh!!!! What to do??? Anyone have any thoughts about what to do with a 6 year old??? I'd like to see the sights, but also have to keep in mind her enjoyment and need to get out and run around a bit. Tough to decide!

We did Mary Poppins and Lion King a couple of years ago and loved them both. I think Lion King is the better show, but DD had a blast at MP. She was in a big MP phase then. Even had the Jolly Holiday costume (and looked adorable!). We met up with the performers after the show when they came out from backstage and got them to sign our program and take some pictures. Very fun!

Still debating what we want to do in NYC. There are too many choices! We are going to Uncle Jack's steakhouse for dinner before Wicked. We ate there last time for my mom's birthday and OMG, it was gooooooood! So, that should be fun. Otherwise, I'm just not sure. The Statue of Liberty is essentially closed for renovation, though we did that last time and I've been several times. We've done ESB...but it is always fun to do that. Just not sure! So much to do, so little time!

We're heading to Niagara Falls after the cruise and staying at Great Wolf Lodge. So, that should be fun!!! We stayed at the one in Grapevine, TX a couple of years ago. Good times!

Ok, so plane tickets are officially purchased! Darn that oil price increase! They went up over $100 each in the past week. Oh well. That's what I get for lollygagging around on buying them. But, it is done now! We fly in on July 6 and should be there by 1pm. That should be plenty of time to get to the hotel, rest, grab a bite and see a show!

I am definitely interested in doing a FE gift exchange and officially so is Laurie12820. So I guess I will take the bull by the horns...or should I say....take the fish by the hook...and start a list of cabins interested in doing the gift exchange.

Myself personally, I like to leave it to the individual families participating to decide what, how and when to do the exchange...meaning that some families like to do individual gifts for all persons in the cabin and some like to do cabin gifts for the entire family with no rules or restrictions on when to deliver and how often to deliver. I think putting restrictions on what, how much and how often takes the fun out of it for some people who just want to participate. It is just fun to be a part of it all! So basically if you are interested, you are agreeing to gifting all parties that sign up at some point during the cruise.

I will put disboard names, cabin #s for all participants and also names and ages of people in the cabin for those interested in doing more individualized gifts.

JOIN US! IT IS SO MUCH FUN! :cool1:

Laurie, I see you appear to be the keeper of the list! ;) We have added another person to our cabin. My daughter is bringing a friend, Erin (11). Could she please be added to the list of persons going in our cabin? Thanks. Michelle

Has anyone looked into independent tours in St. John's and Halifax. We have a group of 10, and that may work out the best for us. Starting to check this out.

Hi Trudy623! Welcome to the DISboards! When planning a disney related trip, it is the ABSOLUTE best place to be....I have learned so much and have made so many friends here.

Are you cruising with us on July 8th?

The FE (fish extender) gift exchange you are hearing about is this: Outside the cabin doors, there is a metal fish that serves a place for crew members to place important documents/information for your cabin on. Cruisers have made it into a place to hang bags/pockets/organizers or "fish extenders" (it extends the purpose of the fish as well as the length as these bags/pockets/organizers hang from the fish. If you sign up for a FE gift exchange you agree to hang a FE from your fish outside your cabin and exchange gifts with other participants on your cruise. Gift range so much...candy, key chains, journals, pencils/pencils, ornaments, picture frames, homemade magnets, scrapbooks, gifts from someone's home city/country etc. I could go on and on.....

At some point you deliver your gifts to your fellow participants...some do cabin gifts, some do individual gifts geared to the age of the participant...some deliver something everyday or once/twice during the cruise. Myself personally, I have always done it on my prior disney cruises and I enjoy both the giving and the receiving. My daughter (11) is completely involved and when she heard we were sailing this summer, the first thing she asked is if we were going to do the gift exchange. In fact, I stepped up and organized it as she kept bothering me that one had not been started for our cruise. It is nice coming to your cabin and wondering if a surprise is waiting for you! The more participants, the merrier.

There are many links inside the general cruise line thread that people post pictures of their fish extenders...some people even make them and sell them to other cruisers....there are also threads where people post what they have given and received as gifts...Not sure how to post links...I would try to figure it out for you, but I am about to head out for afternoon...

Hope this helps. And if you are cruising with us...please consider joining the gift exchange! Like I said, the more, the merrier!

Michelle

Wondering what movies will be playing onboard....the opportunity to see a movie sans child is exciting to me! Brave comes out June 22nd, but Disney's other big release is The Avengers in May. Hope that will still be playing! Because DD likes them: :scared:

Thanks Tinkified. The link came through fine. It looks like a cute idea. I am going to read up on how to join an exchange.

Hi!

We are booked on this cruise and we are so excited! We are from Long Island, NY. We are a family of 7....DH and myself, DD 12, DS 10, DD 7.5 and my parents. We are in connecting SPH (secret porthole) rooms, 5022 and 5024. I'll be paying our cruise in full by Friday and then booking excursions as soon as we can.

We are also going on the Dream on 4/5- just my 5 (no parents). We are going with friends of ours, another family of 5! DH and I are also doing the 6/15 and 8/10 2 nighters without the kids. They will be home with grandma!

Anyone doing any of these cruises?

Can't wait for the cruises to begin........soooo need a vacation!

We have friends sailing in August. I did a thread search but cannot find any threads on Halifax/St. John info, excursions, tips, etc. Is there one started yet like they did for Alaska?

There is a thread for the Eastern Canadian cruises that covers Halifax and St. John. I haven't seen one that is for post-trip excursion reviews yet. The Eastern Canadian thread is full of good info though, with several local DIS members offering tips.

Speaking of tips...for those of you with daughters, reservations for the weekend before our trip are now open for dining at American Girl Place in NYC. I'm fairly sure my DD couldn't care less, but *mommy* is really excited!!!
