NYC to Canada July 8, 2012: Its Magic, Eh?

Thanks so much taximom00 and jmpm. We really appreciate being able to play in spite of being so late in the game. We are really looking forward to this cruise. It's so exciting to go on a Disney cruise right in our own back yard!!

Once, in the Barnes & Noble, I was looking at a book with my niece who was 5 or so at the time. I wasn't really reading the book. Just pointing out the pictures and talking about the story. I looked up to see two little guys holding up books. One says, "Do this one next!" Within minutes, I was actually reading books to a group of about 10. I took several requests! A little guy sat on my lap! One parent finally said, "I don't think she works here." LOL! Now in public, I try not to use the teacher voice, but I'm not always very successful!

We're staying at the Loews Regency. It's one of only two hotels that participate with DVC points. My nieces have never been to NY and I haven't been since I was a teen. My friend, Peggy, has been more recently, and we have a friend who lives there who will spend Saturday, or most of it, with us. But, I'm still doing lots of research to figure out what we'd like to do. If we have to choose FAO vs. Toys, which would you do? We didn't make reservations for the memorial, but I did know we need to. Why Empire State over the Rock? We chose Top of the Rock so we could see Empire State, and I hear it's less crowded. I'd really love to see Cirque at Radio City Music Hall, but I'm budget conscious, so I'm afraid that's out! Skipping the SOL isn't out of the question. . .I would love any advice on making the most of our limited time!! Thanks!

I would do Toys R Us simply because the ferris wheel is fun! I would pick Empire State Building because it's the Empire State Building One of those iconic buildings of the world!

You can go to Rockefeller Center and check out the Today Show ....if you go early (as in 6am) you can be with the crowds and try to 'get seen' on TV!! If your nieces make a poster and make their way to the front, good chance of being seen, if only for a moment! A cool "I"m sailing with Mickey" type poster will likely get good screen time

There is an American Girl store there as well (HUGE!!)

We have changed our plans for after the cruise. We will be leaving the city and heading to Long Island to visit DHs old stomping ground and get some yummy pizza!

Is anyone else driving in? Nervous about the traffic/parking situation.

Yes, we are also driving in. We will arrive on the 6th, so I'm not worried about traffic. We will leave early enough on the 8th to arrive in time. I do hope there is parking available. Hopefully it won't be full. The terminal website says there is also parking a few blocks away. . . . Don't know how I feel about that. . . . .

Seems that each pier has it's own parking lot. We should be fine. I've been reading that if you arrive to early, we'll be fighting traffic of those disembarking.

My docs came yesterday and my mom's arrived at her house today.

RE: driving in the city....are you nervous about the driving to the port before the cruise or out to LI after the cruise?

We get back on Thursday morning....it won't be awful for you to drive to LI because it's technically against traffic...so by the time we get off the ship, get luggage, etc I think it will be fine (we will be driving back to LI, too, to my mom's for a few days)

As far as before the cruise, if you are arriving on a weekday, I'd just try to time it so you are after the morning rush. Once your car is parked at your hotel, you won't need it again until you go to the port (or are you leaving it at the hotel garage??)

Thank you! We are driving in the morning of the cruise. So, I'm assuming a Sunday morning won't be bad traffic-wise? We are hitting the road around 6.

I'm nervous that we will be caught up in traffic around the port area.

I'm excited about heading to Port Washington. Haven't been in a few years!

A related question....do the Edge night actitives generally begin after late dining?

We are currently scheduled for late dining thought waitlisted for main. I am wondering if kids miss out on activities if they are in late dining (though that's not why we are changing....my mom really wants early dining!)

It does seem a lot closer now that we have cruise docs!!!! I think all our reservations are made and everything is pretty well lined up. I'll be packing on July 4th, getting ready to fly to NYC on the 6th. Really excited for this trip! I think it is going to be really fun and different.

Maureen and I are going to cancel our Palo tea reservation tonight. We have done it a couple of times before and with it being stopped later this year, we thought it would be good to give someone else a chance to try it.
