NYC to Canada July 8, 2012: Its Magic, Eh?

I didn't look into brunch as we are only interested in dinner. Sorry!

No problem, we can go on line soon and. Heck everything out. Have a great time on the cruise.

Linda

Well, after agonizing over excursions, not to mention their costs, I think we're going to try to wing it ourselves in St. John! I'd like to walk the Harbour Passage to see the Reversing Falls and then visit the Market and the New Brunswick Museum to see the whale bones. It sounds like most of it is walkable and I heard there may be a shuttle/ferry to come back from the falls. If not, it certainly won't hurt to walk off some of the calories from all those late dinners! ;) Now to figure out Halifax. . . .

Posting again so I can get closer to 10 and share some links I've found!pirate:

Oh, the reversing falls sounds interesting! Will have to check it out! Thanks for sharing!

From what I read you can only appreciate the falls by viewing it at two different times of day to actually see the reverse but this may not be possible on such a tight schedule.

Yes, it has to do with the tides coming in and out. Will have to watch the tide table closer to sail date to see what the best times will be. Hopefully it will coincide with our port time!

Just used a prediction chart and it is forcasting 6:19 AM ADT for high tide and 12:34 ADT for low tide.

Okay, so I know what NYC is like in July, and I know that the average high in Nova Scotia will be 71ºF, but what about our days at sea? Hot, warm, chilly? For the pirate party on Thursday, should I get a t-shirt or a hoodie? This is my first cruise in this area and I don't want to pack the wrong things. I have a feeling I'm going to need a variety of cool and warm weather clothing. I may need a few suitcases. . . . !!

Info below is what I found when I googled. I'm hoping for closer to 77 than 71!! Especially on sea days as my daughter will be excited for the pools!

I live in Boston and spend a lot of the summer in NY. I kind of figured the weather would be similar to Boston, maybe a bit cooler/less humid (Boston is generally the same as NY in summer)

I'm also hoping to get a Disney sweatshirt on the ship....I'm sure DCL marketing has a nice Canadian hoodie planned for sale:)

Summer
The summer weather and climate in Halifax is mild and always hottest between July and August, when daytime temperatures regularly average in excess of 25°C / 77°F. Mild nights at this time of the year allow outdoor evening festivities and al fresco dining at many restaurants in central Halifax. June and July are amongst the driest months in Halifax, with only occasional rainy weather and showers.

I hope your google search is more accurate than mine! 77 sounds lovely! :) And, I like the sound of dry!

I'm sure the pools will be heated, and I don't think I could stop my nieces from swimming even if it is chilly.

Ooooh! Souvenirs! I hadn't started thinking about that yet. One more delicious idea to think over! I love bringing home a little bit of Disney. :earsboy:

It sounds like I won't get the best of the Falls, as our time in St. John won't allow for two visits. Or at least not at the right times. I've only been on a cruise once before this, and I found I didn't relax until the last day. For this trip, I'm going to convince myself to be ok with not running constantly to see and do everything! So, maybe I will be content with one view of the falls. Maybe. . . . ;)

Here is what the chart is predicting:
2012-07-11 Wed 05:47 AM ADT Sunrise
2012-07-11 Wed 06:19 AM ADT 7.20 meters High Tide
2012-07-11 Wed 12:34 PM ADT 1.58 meters Low Tide
2012-07-11 Wed 02:34 PM ADT Moonset
2012-07-11 Wed 06:46 PM ADT 7.30 meters High Tide
2012-07-11 Wed 09:11 PM ADT Sunset

They say the best time to see it is low tide because after the tide empties out you can walk around down below where the water once was. We are in port from 9:30-5:30. They are showing low tide at 12:34pm. Here is the link to the sight that I got the table from: http://www.new-brunswick.net/Saint_John/reversingfalls/reversing.html So, there is some hope for some fun at the falls! :goodvibes

Hi all! Been busy today booking transportation pre and post cruise. Taking the DCL bus fron Newark Airport, booked a limo for our ride to the Hotel in Downtown Manhattan, then a shuttle from the Hotel back to Newark Airport on July 16. The cruise will soon be here!

Thanks for this info! Was it you or someone else who posted you can walk along a path from the port to the Falls? I guess I had the sense it was farther. We are still debating about the train ride. It seems like something fun and different and maybe a chance to see the countryside a bit??

Apparently there is also a nice market (Farmers type) just by the port.

I still havent' told my daughter we are going. I guess they've been showing some Disney cruise infomercial on the Disney channel the past week or two. She keeps saying she wants to go on a Disney cruise! I should pay attention next time the TV is on and see what the commercial is all about!

This is a map that shows where ships dock, the Harbour Passage to the Falls, the Museum and the Market. I saw on another website that the walk to the falls is about 30 minutes, but don't take my word for it. I did see pics, so I can tell you it is paved.

I've seen the commercials and every time it comes on when my nieces are around, I think I'm going to burst! LOL! I'm not telling them until June. If I can keep it to myself that long!

Thanks for the link. I'm going to need to google a bit about Saint John. I've got a plan for Halifax!

My mom wouldn't be able to do a 30 minute walk so I think I'll need to either consider the train excursion or possibly a cab?

I also haven't told my daughter and am waiting until school gets out (June 18).....like you, I feel like I'm going to slip! She is getting a little suspicious....especially as I've embarked on a new craft endeavor....not something I'd typically jump on with 6 weeks of school left (I'm a teacher!) Mind you, the crafting she sees are my 'tests' as she can't see me doing Disney stuff! She is thrilled with my tests though and has started helping!

:)

Don't be left behind! It's not too late to join the FE. . . but it's getting close! I am having a ton of fun picking out gifts and planning our FE. I have no doubt you will enjoy it, too! I'm really looking forward to making deliveries. So far our group is very manageable and there is more than enough room for you! Add a little extra *magic* to your cruise. Join the best FE on the Atlantic! :goodvibes

How do you join the FE?

Post here that you want to join so that Tinkified can add you to the list of families participating by May 8. Include a list of who is in your cabin, ages, and your cabin #. You can see examples of the information other people included on page 13, I think.

There are lots of forums about what the fish extender is, if you need that information, or I'm sure someone here will happily explain. Basically, it's like reverse trick or treating. You hang an organizer from the fish decoration/clip next to your door. You can make or buy the extender (ebay, etsy. . . ) There are lots of ways to make it, and no "right way." Then you buy or make little treats and gifts for the other families in the exchange. You deliver the gifts to their doors, and they will deliver gifts to you! Our exchange is very relaxed. We aren't assigning delivery days, so it's up to you to deliver when you would like.

I've started shopping for the FE. I won't reveal any secrets, but my goody bags already contain some trinkets for the kids and I'm planning to make a small something fun and useable for each cabin!

If you're reading this, you should join! I'm already having pre-cruise fun! :)

Tinkified posted the updated list on 4/23. It's page 12. Not too late to join and add a little extra pixie dust to your cruise! pixiedust:
