NYC CRUISES PLANNING/INFO ThREAD!

I really appreciate all the tips from New Yorkers (and non-New Yorkers) on this board! I have 2 additional questions:

1. We planned on seeing a child-friendly broadway show (such as Mary Poppins) Is it OK to take children to an evening performance? Our children are 7 an 10 and I think would be well-behaved.

2. We would like to stay in the Time Square area. Are there any areas that are considered "seedy" that we should avoid or is anywhere fine.

Thanks again!

I'm so glad this thread is here, because I have never been to New York before, and we're sailing on 9/2! I have lots of newbie questions and would love some advice!

1. We're flying from Memphis to LGA the day before the cruise. Anyone know of a good hotel near that airport that we could get shuttle service to the port from on the morning of the cruise? If not, what's the easiest way to get to the port the next morning? If we decided to stay in a hotel near Times Square instead, how would we get to the port the next morning?

2. When we get off the ship, we are staying for two more nights and would like to do some sight-seeing. We are DVC members and would like to do an RCI exchange--has anyone had any luck using their points in NYC? I've tried calling member services several times and nothing is ever available...what's a good time window to check into this again? If we are unable to use DVC points for those two nights, where's a good place to stay for under $200/night, or does something like that even exist?

3. We want to see Wicked on Broadway but don't want to pay full price for the tickets, nor do we want to spend hours in line at TKTS (or whatever it's called ;) ) the day of the show. Where's a good place online to get tickets ahead of time for a good discount?

4. If we do one of the sight-seeing tours like NYC city pass or a bus tour, what's a good one to do? I'm assuming we'd have to take a taxi to the tour company and then when we're done touring we'd take another taxi back to our hotel?

5. Getting back to the airport on the day we fly home--do any hotels provide shuttle service back to LGA or do we need to take a taxi again?

Just trying to plan for how much $$ I'll need to have for cabs and incidentals related to travel!

Sorry so long...hopefully this will be enough info to get me started--it's right around the corner! :cool1:

Wicked tickets are HARD to get discounted, I live in this area and have been trying to find them discounted forever and can't ... but I have found GREAT other deals for Broadway tickets at broadwaybox.com

If you want Wicked tickets ... BOOK NOW - they sell out QUICK

I have seen children at evening shows, but it is more common to see them at matinees ... I do not think it should be a problem as long as they are well behaved and quiet.

Any suggestions on what time to book a return trip on a train? I am not sure how much time to allow for waiting on a taxi and the ride back to the train station.

Also anyone know if we are stuck carrying all of our bags onto the ship?

Thanks

Anyone have any experience with private transportation companies?

I know we can do a taxi and Disney transportation, and we might, but thought I'd look at the other options for transportation as well to get us from airport to port and port to hotel.....Thanks.

Yes, I do. I have a car service that I have used for professional and personal use for YEARS, and they have literally never let me down. I'd recommend them without reservation (and have, with great success). If you want to PM me, I'll be happy to share info.

I think 39 St. West of 8th Ave. is still a bit seedy. Still has the old "peep show" type places nearby. But this is area is a little west of TImes Square, closer to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Times Square itself is very "upscale" nowadays.

Reading over the thread posted will also give you restaurant ideas. It might be helpful if you give an idea of what type of restaurant you are looking for and in what area of the city you want to stay in and eat.
I also recommend asking that question on the thread provided to try and keep NYC info in one thread.
thanks

We're thinking of staying near Times Square or somewhere centrally located. We will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary prior to boarding the "Magic" in July. A restaurant that has yummy food, and unique to NYC would be perfect.:)
